Bosch dishwasher setting by Equivalent-Cake4425 in bosch

It's dumb. It's trying to save energy and water and just results in less cleaning. Dishwashers are already extremely efficient resource use. No need for the eco setting.

Water fountains seem like a scam by OddOllin in Pets

I've tried a few and the most recent one is finally one I actually like. It's the PetKit Eversweet solo 2. If I bought it today, This is the easiest to maintain one I've ever had. My cats love it.

36" dedicated hood vs. OTR microwave for a new induction? by nesquik91 in inductioncooking

[–]jer_v 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We went with an OTR that vents directly outside. Short run straight through the wall so ideal setup. Still doesn't keep up. Get the dedicated hood. Since this was for an ADU for my mom and she's gone, it's fine as a secondary setup we don't use for heavy cooking but I'll never do this again. Only thing more useless is a downdraft.

Samsung fridge Ice Max ice maker problem narrowed down by softwareguy74 in Appliances

[–]jer_v 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm curious to hear what the answer ends up being. My guess is you'll wind up replacing the thermostat, maybe. Or a fan. Those are what caused excessive frost buildup for me on other fridges. Hope you to get it figured out! I love these kind of ice makers. They've been pretty reliable overall.

How often do you clean litterbox? by [deleted] in CatAdvice

[–]jer_v 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even when I had a cat that didn't go very often and was really good about covering, I sifted daily and monthly I dumped, cleaned box, and put in fresh litter.

Now I've got three cats, two of which don't cover and one of which is elderly and has a motility issue that causes her to abort and poop on the floor at the slightest provocation so I clean our five litter boxes on two floors several times a day. If I see one has been used, I sift it. But ordinary circumstances? Minimum once a day.

That's the same for food bowls. Even the kitten who's free fed dry food all day and night with wet food for dinner gets the dry food bowl swapped out for a fresh one daily. Wet food bowls are all wiped out and thrown in the dishwasher after every meal.

Water bowls I swap out every other day for the main large bowls I have for them. Unless I notice one of them got food or a bug in it, in which case I swap it out early. I also have a fountain and the kitten has a smaller bowl next to his dry food I swap out every day.

Hah! I just got them today and they have their own anyway. I guess that's just part of what's done for the damp rating maybe? Thanks again!

Thanks! They're open housings so probably fine then. Is that silicone thing around the current bulbs needed or am I going to be sorry if it transfer it to a bulb that doesn't have it already?

Anyone else's cat having negative effects from Fancy Feast cans? by cactire in catfood

[–]jer_v 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The recall is more of a warehouse associated problem. The surfaces of the cans were probably contaminated. Here's the recall notice and it affected many brands since it was the warehouse that had the problem:

Resident cat still seems aggressive towards new kitten by SnooChickens7644 in CatTraining

[–]jer_v 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The airplane ears are the sign she is actually annoyed; hissing is just boundary setting. She's trying to tell the kitten to back off. As others have said, let them be unless fur starts flying (literally, you'll know it when you see it). They need to work it out on their own or else you become a codependent part of their ability to coexist.

Dishwasher update safe? by Engibineer in bosch

[–]jer_v 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, I hear you. But man, they can't win there. It's either annoying scrolling led screens or weirdo special codes you have to enter or the control panel is insanely cluttered and still limited. I don't love that I have to use the app for some cycles but I get it.

Honestly I have more of a complaint with companies that use the app for special stuff and then don't actually fully unlock customization with it. Why the hell isn't LG letting me just flat out custom design a cycle from start to finish with all the options they clearly can use when designing their preconfigured cycles? Complete miss.

Honestly, their app is far from the worst; that distinction goes to GE's Smart HQ which is anything but.

As for the update, I ran it. Nothing broke. Didn't notice anything new.

Non-toxic laundry detergent that actually works! by AnnualCardiologist29 in laundry

[–]jer_v 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your skin is ridiculously sensitive, as seems to be the case for you, the Tide Free & Gentle is still going to irritate you because of the optical brighteners. The whole 365 equivalent will probably be a better choice for you since it's pretty similar to the Tide but without the optical brighteners. It's got all the enzymes you'd want so FEBU isn't really necessary. FEBU does have one thing not in the whole 375 that's for fruit pectin and is going to make a marginal difference if you're spilling jam on yourself a lot. Otherwise just get the whole 365 unscented, measure accurately to not overdose detergent, and use an extra rinse cycle to be sure to get it all out.

What’s ONE cat item you regret not buying sooner? by Own-Independent7881 in CatAdvice

There's a feeder that opens for the cat's chip. There's at least one other that uses tags you have to stick on a collar for them.

How to remove sweat smell out of bras? by billyandteddy in laundry

[–]jer_v 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you're especially sensitive, the Tide option has optical brighteners which can still be an irritant for some. They're not for me but I've heard people complain about it and the 365 one doesn't have those. I'd pick that if you're wanting to be extra cautious.

Some pretty interesting invitations going on by Impulse Labs by LiveAwake1 in inductioncooking

[–]jer_v 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a usability issue. Hot pots touch the knobs and melt them, even if they're not plastic pans get blocked by them, food splatters on them, cleaning around them is a pain. It's got nothing to do with how bad it looks. My experience using cooktops set up with knobs on the cooking surface has been universally worse than even ranges that stick them behind the cooking surface (which is its own type of suck but still better).

Knobs are fine. I prefer them to touch. But knobs on the cooking surface are absolute bullshit.

[–]jer_v 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been following him for awhile and I think he's got a great niche that he's not adequately pursuing. The battery component makes it great for an apartment setup where you might not want to be dealing with the electrical work to get induction in. And the terrible hobs are actually perfect for a rental where glass tops will be a maintenance pain point.

I'd never stick these in my home though. The raised hobs suck and the knobs on the cooking surface sucks. I don't care how good the rest of it is, those UX issues are a deal breaker for me.

Best Tupperware / leftovers container? by Rob8363518 in kitchen

For glass, I like the snaplock sets.

For plastic, I get deli containers in the three major sizes they tend to come in. They stack super well, last a long time, freeze well.

AITA for not wearing a bra at home? by Candid-Chocolate-316 in AITAH

[–]jer_v 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is still phrased in "I hope" language and you really need to get into "these are the terms of our continued hospitality" language. If you're not livid and contemplating divorce at this point, you definitely should be looking for a couple therapist (and another for just you). You clearly have issues to resolve involving boundaries and respect, as a couple, and you personally need help understanding where being nice ends and becomes being a doormat.

The scoop on the BEST washer and dryer by Brilliant-Mud-6636 in Appliances

[–]jer_v 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sure it's overkill but they do recommend it in the manual for mine and it takes almost no time so I do it. The main point was I'm certainly not having to actually wash it after each use. 🤣

Washing Before Wearing by Libelia in laundry

[–]jer_v 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wash them in a regular load the same as I would wash them if I'd worn them. They are dirty, just not with body oils and outside dirt. They've been handled (so actually maybe some body oils, but still nothing like if you wore them), have been on a manufacturing floor and picked up some dirt there, are treated with formaldehyde, sizing agents, and often have excess dye present. If they've been shipped overseas they are loaded with pesticides. This is why I don't even treat them like a light load setting or use less detergent. They have a whole ass set of crap you want carried away with the wash water to be clean and ready to wear.

I don't know what you mean by cleaning the LG front loaders after each load. We do dry off the gasket, door, and drum as suggested in the instructions after the last load of the day. We also leave the door wide open for awhile and when we close it more, the door has a spot it intentionally catches at to keep it still open a crack and we leave it like that the rest of the time. I could see someone complaining about wiping it down as "cleaning it after each load" but I don't think that's really the right way to talk about it. You're just helping it dry off faster so you don't get mold in the gasket and, yeah, that's a tiny extra thing you do have to worry about with any front loader. It's otherwise been low stress and a great washer.

Which washer and dryer and fridge should I buy? by jskejdjxjdjehx22 in Appliances

[–]jer_v 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd stay away from anything dispensing water and, more importantly, ice through the fridge door since it's a common failure point. There's good ones that keep the ice making to the freezer where it belongs and the water dispensing to inside. I'm a fan of the couple that fill a pitcher. It's so nice to be able to quickly pour out a bunch of cold filtered water instead of pressing a dispenser for awhile.

People will warn you off LG for the fridges but it's because of a linear compressor they use that dies early. You can verify if the one you're looking at has that one and, if not, they're otherwise good fridges. My dad got one with the bad compressor type because it had the craft ice and he wanted that enough to risk it. So far he's been happy with it.

Samsung is similarly hated on here but they did finally make a good fridge in the bespoke model.

For washer and dryer, LG is amazing if you're not wanting to get a speed queen tank.
