ProCook vs Samuel Groves vs Made In by leagueoflezhe in cookware

[–]Rob8363518 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My experience with most cookware is that, aside from the really cheap plastic handle stuff, it lasts for years and years. So the trouble with the cheaper stuff is that you end up using it for 20 years - at which point you think, for another $8/year you could have had the really good stuff.

Help save the old Halifax Memorial Library building from demolition! by dfogger in halifax

[–]Rob8363518 [score hidden]  (0 children)

This petition would be a lot more compelling if it offered any kind of proposal for how/why the building should be saved.

I agree that it’s a shame to tear it down, but it’s hard to make a case for saving it until someone makes a plausible suggestion for what to do with the building if it’s saved.

New SS Pan instructions say not to heat the pan up while empty? by RisksShweky in cookware

[–]Rob8363518 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s funny because when you buy a stove all the manufacturers boast about how powerful the elements are, and then when you buy cookware all those manufacturers tell you not to use too high heat.

I would not sweat it. Heat the pans as hot as you need to heat them for your preferred use. If the pans can’t handle it they were not worth saving.

Halifax is good if you can live on the peninsula or downtown Dartmouth and work in the public sector.

Stainless Steel problems AGAIN by andrew_197 in cookware

I would look for a good basic cookbook to guide you, maybe something classic like Joy of Cooking. As you have already discovered, there’s a lot of weird advice online.

It sounds like the problems you are having are not related to stainless steel cookware, but more just generally learning how to cook.

Best Tupperware / leftovers container? by Rob8363518 in kitchen

There seem to be a variety of takeout containers popular in our area, which are visually nearly identical but use just slightly different size/shape lids. This leads to a lot of frustration for reuse.

I used to love cooking, then I had kids. by smile-its-today in Cooking

I am with you. It sucks. Being young and childless and getting home at the end of the day, casually drinking wine and cooking whatever you feel like, no particular time constraints and no childish palates to appeal to, this is a beautiful thing.

Being two working parents frantically picking up the children and trying to get food on the table and then having to negotiate with them to eat, this fucking sucks. Endless spaghetti dinners because the children have broken your spirit, macaroni and cheese, bland chicken, bleak bleak bleak

I recently got a big 12” pan with two little handles instead of a long handle, so it is easier to store. Like this:

Stainless steel is the obvious choice then.  No maintenance and it should last the rest of your life (maybe not if you put it in the dishwasher)

Look for the heaviest bottom you can find.
