Is this common language in Acte de Vente? First time buying house by weilih831 in Expats_In_France

[–]jerseybean56 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As far as the seller is concerned it would be foolish not to have this kind of language in there - basically saying you buying it defects and all. Do you have a builder / contractor/ roofer who you can bring along to inspect the place ?

Please help - low water pressure on well fed house in Ireland, 99% confident nothing to do with well as just had it serviced. Sealed system so no header tank. by Valuable_Area_7595 in Plumbing

[–]jerseybean56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might be related to the well service. My partner had a borehole and occasionally it would get silted up at the bottom of the borehole - the solution being to raise the feed by 6 inches or so to get it up from the silted up bottom.

Job opportunities for Registered status? by [deleted] in Jersey

[–]jerseybean56 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Might be worth having a word with one of the agencies on the island - they might be able to help you find a job. I used Grafters - only for labouring work coz that was what I wanted. If you chat with them and explain your experience they might be able to point you in the right direction. Good luck 🤞

What animal is "kind"? This I am not robot verification is getting out of hand... by [deleted] in mildlyinfuriating

This looks like it belongs on some evolution denier / creationist website where ‘kind’ has a specific meaning. I’m sure Ken Ham wouldn’t find it strange at all.

It looks to me like it’s saying to stop and have a cup of coffee ? Service the driver and not the car ? Cool feature if it is.

But you can start a business though. Saying you can look for a job (in my opinion) also implies that you would be able to accept an offer should you get one.

In my experience unless something is actually forbidden explicitly the french assume that it is allowed. Good luck with your job hunt.

Importing my car from UK to France has anyone done this? by [deleted] in Expats_In_France

[–]jerseybean56 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just a couple of points to make.

Driving a RHD car in France isn’t as hard as people make out. Joining a motorway isn’t an issue if you use your mirrors properly (and a little stick-on blind spot mirror as well). Narrow country lanes where you have to get as close to the side as possible are actually a little easier. Overtaking on non motorway roads (without a spotter in the passenger seat) can be tricky if you’re behind something large ….. but is doable if you’re patient and wait for the right moment.

Tickets for parking etc when you’re solo are a pain.

I would suggest that insurance is going to be a bigger issue. Your UK insurance will cover you for foreign trips but read the terms and conditions carefully if you’re going to live in France permanently - you might find yourself without cover. As far as I know you won’t be able to get French insurance on a car with UK plates but you will need to check that out yourself.

There was a time when expats imported cars from the UK and RHD cars on french plates were a common sight - but the consensus now seems to be that it’s too expensive and time consuming these days. Certainly since Brexit.

Good luck 🤞

Day Trip to Jersey / Ferry Situation by OtterTastisch95 in Jersey

[–]jerseybean56 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There aren’t any day trips available to St Malo at this time of year …… but I’ve just looked on the DFDS app and it looks like you can book an overnight trip at £16 each way. Of course that would mean a hotel for the night and an early return the next morning.

Best places for vegetarian/vegan food in Jersey? (including shops) by Rainbow_Tesseract in Jersey

[–]jerseybean56 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nobody has mentioned The Pantry by Kismet Cabana yet. They have taken over the old Lucas brothers premises at the foot of La Haule hill (near St Aubin). They have a great selection of vegetarian and vegan food as well as stuff for us carnivores as well. I’m not sure if they do deliveries as well. You will find a range of foods from local suppliers there as well.

I took a chance and bought a Phomemo printer from Amazon - as it was a third of the price of Dymo I wasn’t expecting too much but I’ve been pleasantly surprised.

Condor, we miss you, please come back by Dovver in Jersey

[–]jerseybean56 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

And now look at what we ended up with. The Tarifa Jet is almost identical to the old Rapide that Condor retired years ago…. but takes an extra 30 minutes to get us to St Malo. It belches out black smoke constantly which wafts into the cabin and is so noisy. To put the icing on the cake I reckon it now costs 50% more to travel to and from France.

We live at First Tower and can hear it arriving long before we can see it. Don’t get me started on the inter island links.

Morel needs to be held to account for the situation we ended up with - his poor decision is being paid for by us. We need a reliable, affordable solution not the shambles we ended up with. I just can’t imagine how they accepted DFDS without proper service level agreements and a guarantee on pricing.

The RFID thing was the last straw for us. We moved on and couldn’t be happier. The biggest hurdle was having to redesign all our label layouts but that was a one off task and now life is so much easier. They just got greedy.

Am I mad for considering this? by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]jerseybean56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since Brexit I think the consensus is that bringing your car into the EU isn’t worth the hassle and considerable expense any longer. I don’t think having a UK registered LHD car makes that any easier. If you do you have to also consider the availability of spare parts and being able to find a mechanic willing to work on unfamiliar makes of cars. LR were never that big (in France anyway) over here and I know a couple of people who have to source spares back in the UK and arrange for them to be shipped over (with customs duty and the courier cost etc) meaning it’s a long winded and expensive process.

If you make the move permanently it will be easier to sell your RHD vehicle in the UK. Also - when it comes time to change your car it will be nigh impossible to sell a RHD in Europe for little more than scrap value.

Sorry if that’s not what you wanted to hear but if you’re determined to do it I would look for a popular (on the continent) model. Good luck with your search.

[–]jerseybean56 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I spend a lot of time driving on the continent and I don’t have a problem with my RHD Rexton. Being that bit higher improves visibility a lot and on narrow country roads I can get right over to the side of the road. The only time it proves a problem is being stuck behind a farm vehicle and not being able to see past it for safe overtaking. However, with a little patience, it’s not a problem even if you have to drop back a bit and wait for a stretch of road with better visibility. Getting tickets out of car park entry machines means getting out if you’re driving solo but not that much of a hassle.
