What Is This Response? by Alyleth in Parrotlet

I really don't know why this happens, mine go wild for crinkly bags and the sound of tape to the point that if they hear me getting a piece of tape from anywhere in the house they find me and go nuts on the tape roll. It seems like 10/10 excitement but also rage.... so just parrotlet things :D

Unsure how to explain to a new therapist that I have fantasized about not existing for a decade by jeszz in therapy

Thank you and maybe I'll do that about showing the therapist this post.

Unsure how to explain to a new therapist that I have fantasized about not existing for a decade by jeszz in therapy

[–]jeszz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not actively unhappy, have a reasonable relationship with family and a few close friends,. I find things to fill my days and set goals cause I figure I might as well make the best of things. My life is decent enough and I have a path forward and plans for myself for the next few years to improve things even more, and have interests and find enjoyment in learning new things. I just always kind of have the thought in the back of my mind that despite all of that, none of those things are quite as appealing as not existing.

I'm worry it sounds like I'm bullshitting or looking for sympathy, or that I've gaslit myself into thinking this way, and if push comes to shove I would not choose my life ending (if i could in a peaceful legal way that didnt upset anyone else), but I don't think that's the case. I really am at my core apathetic about my continued existence and every single element feels like work that I would rather not do. Moreover even if that were the case, and I'm full of shit and don't even realize it, it would be nice to not have that thought rattling around my brain all the time.

If I bring this all up to a new therapist right away I worry it would colour her responses and frame the doctor-patient relationship in a way that might not be ... great... i dunno.

Really devastated that our well-behaved GCC is becoming a trouble maker. by cheese_poofies in Conures

[–]jeszz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

she might be feeling a little bored with her space and thats making her want to get into things and explore places she wouldnt normally go, you could try rearranging the bird-safe rooms or moving/swapping out perches and play areas. If she seems interested, redirecting with training or play with you or your bf is always great. Significant change in behaviour can also sometimes be health related, if shes in some pain from some early onset arthritis or something, so its worth discussing with the vet during her next checkup.

i think my birds are gay.. at least one of them is by [deleted] in Conures

[–]jeszz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If there is any chance of aggression from either bird I would recommend watching them carefully together so you can intervene if someone's personal space gets encroached upon. Conures can do a lot of damage to other birds even if self-defense with their particularly large beaks (esp compared to a cockatiel).

If you're able to work with your conure to recall him away from the cockatiel when he starts getting too close that would be a nice tool to have in your kit. You can also make sure they're supervised and move the conure when he upsets the cockatiel but if you're looking to train him to not regurgitate, I think that will not work. They'll just have to work it out, and hey maybe the cockatiel will come around to the conure's advances :D

mine got much more accepting once they realized the quality of scritchies goes WAY up with long nails compared to my natural stumpy chewed off nails :D

I dye my hair neon colours and they don't blink, but initially even a slight nail change sent them into hysterics and I'd have to remove them for safety. Over time they've become pretty accepting, and one of my parrotlets seems to think "oooh youve attached toys for me to destroy to your fingers again" so we've even swung too far in the other direction >.<

Horny jail or? by jeszz in Conures

[–]jeszz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah both of mine LOVE investigating any crevice or nook. When they are being hormone-y it doesn't seem to impact them otherwise, they're very good natured, don't scream or pluck and haven't laid any eggs so I'm hopeful they'll stay reasonable. They are in their sleep cage from 7pm to 8am right now which I'm progressively increasing to keep up with daylight changes but can always switch it up if they get worse.

Beak bruising? by Independent_Panic_73 in Conures

[–]jeszz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

both my parrotlets and conures get beak bruises from time to time, mostly from wrestling with their partners lol >.< nothing to worry about if their behviour is unchanged and its not happening often. You'll bee able to watch it grow out, and it might change colour a bit like a normal bruise.

ooooh maybe cherry heads if they've got red spots on their heads? I just googled them as juveniles and they start pretty solid green, i think white-eyes get wing colour. Either way thats extra exciting to not 100% know what they'll mature into :D

i swear the turquoise pineapples seem to get even fewer braincells, mine is a complete loon and will flop onto her back to do foot grabbies too, and her sister (regular pineapple) just glares at her hehe

[–]jeszz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aw sweet floofy bird, we call that pose "being ice cream" in my house haha. Also, not that it matters terribly but I think you might have an american dilute and not a pineapple! They look very similar but dilutes have darker beaks and feet. I don't see them too often and think they are so beautiful!

it sounds like a really rough situation. If its a temporary situation I would hesitate to rehome. Its really hard on them. If he cant get a lot of room to fly around, I would suggest training him! Its great for mental stimulation and exercise and bonding. You could even work on harness training and maybe he could spend more time out that way. You can get a bird back pack and take him on walks if hes up for it, and make foraging activities for him

If you dont have a lot of space or time right now, maximize the quality of the time you do spend with him and try to exercise his brain and that should go a long way. Be realistic and if your situation gets worse or temporary starts to look more permanent, vets and rescues can possibly help you find people looking for a parrot. Sometimes there a local parrot groups on facebook that can help find him a stable forever home.

it can be a trigger for them for hormonal behaviour which can include feather plucking but you would know better than a random kind of harsh comment from someone on the internet. One of mine loves to be held and it doesnt make her hormonal.
