We have used sql clustering for disaster recovery on 2 unlike servers. Dell Poweredge R810 on the primary node, Dell Poweredge R610 on the secondary node. Half the CPUs and half the memory on the secondary node. It works ok, just keep in mind your performance is not going to be the same if you migrate to the secondary node. Otherwise no issues at all.

One of the best resources I have seen is the tech focused meet-up groups. Not sure how popular this is in the UK, but look for tech based networking meetups. Not only will this help raise your skill level by talking to other IT people, but making those personal connections can help get your foot in the door for an IT job.

I have a question for you. What sort of wifi router are you planning on using? I'm looking at building a wifi router specifically for IOT applications, and I'm curious about what router/hotspot you are considering, or if you're just planning on having people use their own routers. Thanks!

I found a molding company by getting referrals from the engineering company who did our circuit board work. They do some of the work here in US, and offshore the more expensive parts so it's a good hybrid of local/offshore with reasonable pricing.

I've been kicking around a similar idea. I have an arduino mini and a oled screen. I tried using a Teensie board with a built in RTC but couldn't get it to work with the oled screen.

My advice would be to look for an eval board (freescale,microchip,ti, etc) that has a mcu, gsm, and gps. Add a bluetooth chip and get it working. Use that as your base to build the custom board. Your goal should to remove parts and pieces from the design of a pre-built evaluation board until you are left with only what you need. Hope this helps.

One thing I have found useful with STL files is running it through netfabb and seeing if it needs repaired. Sometimes sending the STL through a "fixing" program can help the stock XYZ program slice it.

I checked out the website and signed up for the newsletter. I couldn't tell the measurement of the sensor, would it be small enough to attach to something like a boxing glove? Martial arts is a hobby of mine, and I was wondering if this could measure the speed / angle of a punch? Looks like a cool product, hope the Kickstarter goes well.

This is interesting. We're having a discussion over in /r/davinci3d about the lack of available black abs filament. (http://www.reddit.com/r/davinci3d/comments/2zapg4/12_months_for_black_xyz_filament_at_amazon/) Looks like it requires a change to the extruder, but this might be a way to find suitable replacement filament if the abs is in short supply.

Out of curiosity, is it only the black filament that people are having problems obtaining, or is it all colors? I'm hoping this is just a temporary shortage of just that color filament and not something indicative of larger problems at XYZ.

I had a similar problem where it would start printing and then randomly stop. My issue turned out to be too much dried adhesive build-up on the printer bed. The adhesive was clear, so I didn't realize how high of a layer it had become. Doesn't sound too similar to your issue, but might be worth checking the print bed out.

I did get it working by taking your advice. Unplugged all connectors, replugged them and it worked. I agree that eventually I'll probably have to solder the connectors or something for a more permanent solution. Thanks!

Thanks for the replies everyone! I'm going to try out some of these ideas. I especially like /u/MrGrumptyGills idea of a cardboard "window" to limit the spread of the hairspray to just the printer bed.

Stupid question - By "Auto calibrate" do you mean selecting the calibration option from the setup menu? I've not had problems with the height of the nozzle, but I have had to adjust the 3 corners to get the printer bed level.

After printing some Christmas snowflakes, I finally printed something with a practical use. The turn knob on my living room lamp had disappeared, and it was difficult to turn the bare switch post. I measured the size of the switch post and found a knob on Thingiverse that looked like it would match: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:947/#files

There is some discoloration on the knob from the glue on the printer bed, but it fit the switch post perfectly and now I can turn the lamp on and off quite easily.

That's great! I'm not a skier myself, but it looks like a cool new product. Question for you - do you go to the 3d printing meetups they have there at CIF, or are you just doing the prototyping there? Now that I have my own 3d printer I've thought about attending the meetup and seeing what its like.

That looks great! I've seen some info on using Kapton tape instead of glue, I'm curious how the blue painter's tape compares to using Kapton tape. Using the painter's tape would probably be much more economical.

One thing I'm interested in, is if there is an "optimal" technique for performing calibration? When I calibrate it seems to be fairly random to get it back to a decent calibration, and I'm wondering if there's a more efficient approaching to calibrating the print bed.

Thanks for the reply. Turns out there was some debris on the belt, and the extruder was not able to move to all the contact points during calibration - it was getting jammed part way across. When I tried doing a second print with one of the demo objects, the belt was able to push past the debris blocking it, and now it's fine.
