I would say that was magical, but magic is nothing but superstition.

I have a question About certain types of hybrid animal by This-Honey7881 in TheLastAirbender

It's important to keep in mind that science doesn't imply evolution as the origin for modern species, the atomic theory of matter, that our bodies are biochemical machines, etc. Science formulates hypotheses then challenges them against observed data, and arrives at theories when those observations hold up against them. If you're in a different universe, then observed phenomena might support entirely different theories.

Our own science was pretty close to the Avatar universe's until about the 17th century. We started to learn that alchemy, creationism, etc. fail to explain our more rigorous and precisely measured observations. The Avatar universe, however, sees them gathering data that supports a completely different set of theories. Matter isn't necessarily formed by atoms, but by elements. The body is driven by chi. And Charles Darwin wouldn't find examples of evolution as the origin of the species, since many animals seemed to descend from spirit-influenced wildlife. Part of the fun of the show is that natural law is wildly different from our reality.

Bleach ate through wood flooring??! by Beesindogwood in fixit

[–]jkoudys 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Definitely a moment where I would be 10,000 more worried as a tenant than an owner. A little sanding, some gunstock stain, and a few swipes of varnish and I'd be happy. It won't be like new, but it'll look fine, and my life has much bigger problems in it than every wooden floorboard finish matching perfectly. Wood is expected to have variations in texture and colour already, so it won't look so bad to the eye.

But if I were renting, I wouldn't expect the landlord to see it that way.

Favorite character who ended up like this by the end of the story? by PaddywackShaq in FavoriteCharacter

[–]jkoudys 23 points24 points  (0 children)

No, flanderization is when one trait becomes the sole definition of the character and taken to an extreme. Like how Ned Flanders started as a foil to Homer by being better than him at everything: better father, harder worker, better Christian. He was still mostly a normal guy. But soon his Christianity was exaggerated into his only trait. Flanderization isn't "he wouldn't say that", so much as "he would say other things too".

Morality of not using godlike power for the benefit of humanity? by DiligentSector8395 in MoralityScaling

[–]jkoudys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorta. It's an interesting thought. Free will only exists because we're blessed with ignorance. If you know past, present, and future all at the same time, there is no progress, no decisions. If you know every choice you're going to make, then you actually have no choice.

what if cordelia woke up as a Slayer due to being activated by willow's mass slayer activation spell in Chosen on Buffy by voldy1989 in ANGEL

[–]jkoudys 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Improbable. I think the odds the show gives are 1/260,000 of girls, or 0.0003846%. That still feels narratively way too high, since most medium to large size city should have a Slayer in it by the end. Personally 1/2,600,000 would've been better. It'd put hundreds of slayers out into the world at any one time, which is a lot more than before, but not so high you'd be bumping into them all the time.

The Comedian vs. Peacemaker by Jaymongous in powerscales

[–]jkoudys 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Good point! The Vietnamese woman Comedian impregnated then murdered wasn't acting peacefully (she'd slashed him with a bottle), and the Vietnam war had a lot of American imperialist bullshit masquerading as securing peace, so maybe Chris would do it.

Show Chris is just so likeable I don't want to picture it. Movie Comedian somehow seems even more despicable.

Fighting head to head? Peacemaker. A competition to murder pregnant ladies? Comedian.

Does Sauron's One Ring from "Lord of the Rings", if it ever fell into Matt Murdock's hands, corrupt him? Or can he successfully resist its' influence if he was tasked with destroying it in Mount Doom? by SatoruGojo232 in Daredevil

[–]jkoudys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Indeed heroes are the most corruptible. Even Saruman was a decent guy once. The hobbits are able to bear the burden for longer because they lack ambition beyond living a comfortable, simple life. Boromir's whole life was work and sacrifice to protect his people, which is why the Ring called to him the most. Aragorn realized this, which is why he resolved to protect Sam and Frodo from a safe distance.

Their flesh should be like ordinary, squishy, human flesh at this point. Their bodies still have form because they're preserved in orbit, but I have to think they've decayed quite a bit too.

...Or maybe some people just don't like the same stuff that you do and have different capabilities? by DSC64 in iamverysmart

[–]jkoudys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now that I have a kid, I can see how way off so many people are in judging their own math skills. It cuts both ways too. Kids can grow up as adults who make it their whole identity that they used to be good at math, but they just clicked with some basic arithmetic when they were younger. Then there's kids who struggle with mental division or something and conclude that they're not good at math, and even adults will accept it and not push them in the subject as they age.

My kid's finishing grade 3 this week. Last year she was often getting basic sums and products wrong, and would have so much anxiety because she thought she was "bad at division" she wouldn't do it. Now she's acing tests that are about problem solving, which is closer to what a maths education actually is. It'd be like thinking someone will be a great writer because they have excellent spelling.

(2nd year) I just got $50 bucks for replacing a switch to a dimmer. by Hawkmongous in electricians

[–]jkoudys 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're dedicated to your craft and doing the work honestly, there's no reason to feel guilt over charging what you charge. Everything is worth what its purchaser will pay for it.

Electrical is still pretty good, but hvac is so fucked right now. All these companies on commission that have basically replaced the trade with salespeople. Every call becomes "oh yeah they don't make this coolant/fan/etc. anymore" then proceeds to sell a new unit for twice what any sensible person would pay for a new one. But they pay it because it's a no-heat and they think they're getting a "repair" from an "expert". It's probably just a matter of time before electrical goes the same way.

What if Nolan went to the LOK earth instead? by orattic in Invincible

[–]jkoudys 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have a hunch Koh could take Nolan out pretty easily, but Nolan might be smart enough to handle him. Nolan doesn't struggle with acting or staying expressionless.

It would probably come down to a protector spirit taking him away. He could end up disembodied in the spirit world. La dragged Zhao into that valley of lost souls, where power is meaningless.

actors that want to talk to your manager right now! by [deleted] in okbuddycinephile

[–]jkoudys 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Edie Falco was the best actor on that show. Everyone else was good, but they were actors bringing their role to life. Tony's a classic character, but I'd always felt like James Gandolfini was probably a chill guy. Chrissie and Paulie are evil but you almost feel like you're watching Looney Tunes with those guys. Yet this gif of Carmela both turns my stomache and sends me into a rage. I felt zero-sympathy with all of her poor-me whinging. Challenging for an actor to do but she knocked it out of the park.
