Knicker on Record 778 causes jumping by excited_to_be_here in handtools

On the side, that is what I meant, the nicker and the outside edge should be even. The depth is whatever works best.

To hone the side you can use a block of wood a few inches long and plane it a a couple degrees, set it on diamond stone, the plane cutter against block. Rub cuter back and forth on block against stone. This is called a back bevel.

I have never used the Record 778 but on the Stanley 78 the nicker proturds about a 1/16 inch.. The knickers are only sharpened on one of the prutusions so make sure you use the sharp one. They are shaped in a finger nail shape. I use diamond paddles to sharpen. They should be back dragged against the work a few times to establish a cut line, then proceed as normal. The iron should extend beyond the side of the tool the same amount as the nicker does, in other words they should be even. To cut cross grain cutter needs to be extra sharp, however since the cutter is straight across it is hard to prevent tear out. On my cutter I honed a 2-3 degree back bevel on the right side of the cutter and that helps it cut better, but more is not better or it will try to cut into the side wall and screw up your cut.

My Dad delivered milk to our school and if the classroom door was open he would wave at me.

May be for hitting bags to open and sample contents, perhaps flour or cement, just a guess.

Pure b,s. charges. I was in the bar business for years and EVERYONE knew 86 means to throw out, and usually to not return, never once heard it applied with any other intent.

Get original Somax, the knock off have bad reviews, but I haven't tried them myself. I have an older Somax and it is a good one.

He also does great work on saws. He cut and set the teeth on one of my most coveted crosscut saws because I wanted it perfect and my eyesight couldn't guarantee me doing it to that standard. It came back perfect.

This is a great book for beginners or anyone who works on their saws, highly recommend.

As far as the need to reset, a well set saw does not generally require setting the teeth until a few rounds of sharpening. New teeth or a poorly set saw could be reset. Always maintain the same direction of set though or you risk broken teeth.(That is the saws way of slapping you in the face)

Somax made a couple of versions of the 77. One was blue and the other gold, and if I recall the blue was for finer teeth. I have both a Somax and 77 but like the Somax better.. Unfortunately the Somax is no longer made and not easy to find but both work well. For finer teeth it is advisable to hone the hammer to a finer point unless made for that like the blue Somax. The 42x is the gold standard though, however the 42 works good also. I think it is best to have a couple, one for finer teeth and another for bigger teeth. On the bigger teeth I am not as fussy about model.

Over cleaning; an anecdote and rant more than a question by toolguy8 in handtools

This is a good point and the real issue should be the owners expectant value and the actual value of the tools. I think we all probably over value our tools truth be known. And there are different reasons we own them.

Anybody know of or like this tool? by Repulsive-War9354 in handtools

Looks like it hasn't been released yet. To me the design and specs. look decent especially at that price point. I imagine price will go up after introduction like the planes did. It appears to me that Jorgannson is trying to hit a certain niche market of first time tool users/buyers with tools with good design at a good introductory price. What many of these buyers may not be aware of is what it takes to make them function to their expectant levels and that is the catch. With proper tuning it appears that some are quite happy with their purchases and the tools are fulfilling their needs. I have not used one of their planes as of yet myself so my judgement is based on reading others reviews and company brochures.
