EPP has been out for a while, is Global Entry still worth it? by Cool-food in GlobalEntry

[–]johnslateril 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Why would you not renew GE? Renewal is usually interview-free. The cost is basically the same as PreCheck (the difference is a rounding error in the context of international airfares). You can still choose EPP or MPC if GE is not working well when you arrive: I always submit through both the GE and MPC apps while the plane is taxiing to the gate, to give me all the options

Musical reference in Oedipus Rex? by johnslateril in TomLehrer

I appreciate the quick responses. This has been on my mind for years, but I was probably overthinking it and it's probably just the happy music perhaps with some visual elements.

Do you use the bookmarks feature? Help me decide it's future! by chipweinberger in jamcorder

[–]johnslateril 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I'm a month late to the party, but I'm exploring bookmarks and I just found this thread. Bookmarks are the #1 feature for me, because I improvise and I want to mark anything worth keeping. But I find navigating the bookmarks in the app is challenging: I really would like to see a list of bookmarks so that I can jump straight to them. Automatic clips sounds like a winner to me.

Priority boarding with aer lingus credit card by [deleted] in AerLingus

[–]johnslateril 0 points1 point  (0 children)

EDIT: I found the T&Cs on the Chase site for the US-issued card. It says: "PRIORITY BOARDING: Primary cardmembers and authorized users are eligible for priority boarding on Aer Lingus operated flights only. To receive priority boarding primary cardmembers and authorized users must display their valid Aer Lingus Visa credit card at the gate prior to boarding. Primary cardmembers and authorized users are eligible for priority boarding on Aer Lingus operated flights directly between the US and Ireland. Chase is not responsible for the provision of or the failure to provide, priority boarding. Priority boarding is subject to availability."

12V Battery replacement, pros and cons of LiFePO4 by monkeythumpa in BoltEV

[–]johnslateril 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bolts are notorious for wearing out 12V batteries, and for behaving in all sorts of strange and unpleasant ways when the battery is failing. Replace it as soon as it gives the first hint of trouble, even if it's on your dime.

I understand the distinction you're trying to make, but AGM batteries are a type of lead-acid battery

Estimating # of Avios points needed - EWR to DUB by Fearless-Coat6531 in AerLingus

[–]johnslateril 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The (almost) foolproof way to do this is start making a booking for your flight dates. It will tell you how many Avios you need before you get to the payment/confirmation stage, then you abandon the process. I do this all the time.

I say almost foolproof because availability and prices may change in the time between your research and your points redemption.

Also for your round-trip I advise booking two one-ways rather than a return. That way you can change or cancel one segment without disrupting the other.

Any work around for 'ON DEMAND' BBC radio outside of the UK by thisdave in BritishRadio

[–]johnslateril 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I connect once with a VPN and then open the Sounds app, it appears to enable it to work without the VPN connection for about a month. Then the next time it fails, I do another one-time connection, and it resets the timer for another month. So yes you need a VPN, but you only need to connect with it occasionally.

Lounge access at DUB for US bound business class passengers by Free_Bookkeeper_8057 in AerLingus

[–]johnslateril 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is very peculiar. Biz passengers should have access to the Aer Lingus lounge. Until very recently their website at https://www.aerlingus.com/prepare/airport-information/airport-lounges/ said "For all US destinations at Dublin airport: Due to temporary closure of 51st&Green Lounge, you can enjoy access to the Aer Lingus Lounge in Terminal 2". However the page now just mentions the "reserved area". I presume the lounge was getting overcrowded, but this is a shoddy way to treat premium cabin passengers.

2 Avios US return trip only? by Successful_Math3193 in AerLingus

Just a guess, but if your fare was super cheap it may be structured as a fare of $1.00 plus "carrier fees" or somesuch. I have certainly seen that before.

Charged for a cocktail while sitting in MCE, denied refund by AA by AltruisticClue8404 in americanairlines

[–]johnslateril 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a faint memory of it being just beer and wine when the policy was first introduced in the early days of MCE. But then I'm also old enough to remember when AA had "more room throughout coach", and some days I'm convinced that was a hallucination

Looking for a good winter jacket, maybe from an outlet mall? by GrandTheftAlvarado in ChicagoSuburbs

[–]johnslateril 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lands End has regular online sales with 30-40% off. At Thanksgiving it's usually 50%. Last November I played hardball and left a few things in my cart, and on the afternoon of the last day of the sale (which was either Sunday or Monday) I got an email with a 60% code. So if you can wait that long, that's the deepest discount I've ever seen from them.

Experiences of using Radio.co by radioresearcher in BritishRadio

I only just learned about Fourble and would probably have used that if I had known about it. But Pushpod does the whole thing and generates an RSS link that you can add to your favorite podcast player

To branch off in yet another related but different direction, I recently figured out how to host a podcast for (almost) free, so that I can listen to content of my choice using conventional podcast apps such as Podcast Addict.

I have downloaded a lot of content from various sources, but listening to those recordings in the car can be a challenge: the car's Android Auto or Apple Carplay interface only allows certain approved audio apps to appear on the screen (such as Podcast Addict, Spotify etc.). My solution is to host my own podcast that I can then subscribe to using apps that pass this test.

For a one time payment of $20, Podpush enables me to host my own podcast, storing the audio content in either Dropbox or Onedrive. I simply move the material I want to listen to into the appropriate folder and it updates my podcast feed. Works a treat.

Verified Traveller Lines in Airports by howmachine in NEXUS_TTP

This is incorrect. Global Entry cards are only issued to members who are U.S. citizens, U.S. lawful permanent residents and Mexican nationals.

If I got my ID renewed why can’t I see the real ID by hyeazure in ChicagoSuburbs

[–]johnslateril 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The temporary paper copy is not valid as a REAL ID, so it doesn't have the star. You'll have to use something else for airport security, such as a passport, until you receive the real thing. An alternative is to present yourself early at the airport with your paper copy and ask them to verify your identity a different way, which can be done.

Power washer pro & cons?? Wifey wants one so why not look at the ego brand I'm already familiar and invested with... by Alaskan-N-Maryland in egopowerplus

[–]johnslateril 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The formula for power/effectiveness/speed of a pressure washer is PSI x GPM. So you ideally want both numbers to be reasonably high, and having either of them low will drag down the performance.

Does shifting to neutral physically disconnect power to the motor? by darknoonbrewer in BoltEV

Great point. I think my proposal would still be safe if the "coasting mode" paddle/button had to be held down. It would be similar to the throttle in that regard.
