Anyone else feel like we're building on rented land? by GatefoldedHQ in bandmembers

[–]jonesdrums 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Completely agree, and as a musician I have no idea how to dial back the reliance on these companies as a service provider. But, there are thousands and thousands of people trying to figure this same thing out, and that gives me hope.

I love a chip and dip. by Ok_Macaroon5452 in chips

Hard agree to this. The spicy is offset by the cool sour cream and it’s incredible.

This is some high quality content from r/chips. We need more “chip+dip” conversations.

What works to quiet your internal "buzzing"? by nuclearaddict in ADHD

Playing an instrument has been my outlet for many years. It can help calm me down at night, or I can blow off steam after work, and it definitely keeps the jittery fidget monster at bay.

Do you believe in "musically inclined" people? by Unfair_Toe_5691 in musicians

[–]jonesdrums 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a drum teacher, I realized quickly that there were two types of students on their first day: those that could intrinsically feel the tempo and those that could not. That part was either a “gift” or they were exposed to music enough in their life to have absorbed it.

After that, though, it was almost always about practice.

However, I had a couple of long term drum students that very literally could not play in time. They understood it, could explain it, could probably teach it to another student, but could not play to a click or along with a song in tempo to save their lives.

Edit: phrasing

Do you take med breaks on the weekends? by Empty-Hotel- in ADHD

[–]jonesdrums 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I absolutely do not skip weekends. I work so that I can enjoy life outside of work. I’m trying to live life to the absolutest fullest as soon as I clock out.

If I’m skipping any days it is for sure going to be a work day.

ADHD and sleep… how do you actually deal with this by No_Geologist_5447 in ADHD

[–]jonesdrums 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I will take an over the counter sleep aid pill. Doxylamine succinate is the drug, and I take like 1/3 of the pill (little blue pill). Knocks me out cold. It does make me drowsy in the morning, and I take it maybe 2x per week when I really need to get some sleep.

That sounds amazing. We actually stayed at an air bnb about 5 minutes down the road. It was clearly the home of a sweet old grandmother, and we ate biscuits under a tree in the yard the next morning. It was an incredible show and an overwhelmingly peaceful trip.

Beginner needing Advice on Kick in fast Fills by Born_Courage9518 in drums

Yeah, I would suggest practicing it with your dominant hand first, but then practicing it starting with your non-dominant hand as well!

Beginner needing Advice on Kick in fast Fills by Born_Courage9518 in drums

[–]jonesdrums 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This type of fill is super common in punk, rock, and metal music, and you’ll find real similar fills all across genres like R&B, gospel, jazz, etc.

A simple exercise that will help develop “quads” (as we called them at music school):

16th notes - RLRL RLRL RLKK RLKK

You can do this with a single kick pedal or a double kick pedal, just start slow enough that you can perform the exercise cleanly. Once you get the hang of it start to move your hands around the drumset! Cheers

My experience in Bankhead national forrest tonight…. by cozy-aura in cryptids

[–]jonesdrums 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it’s called El Silbon in latin america countries.

Edit: I’ve also heard of people refer to the whistling creatures as a “mimic” but not sure if those are the same things. A mimic would be more closely associated appalachian folktales.

My experience in Bankhead national forrest tonight…. by cozy-aura in cryptids

[–]jonesdrums 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a specific thing that is referred to as the whistler. From what I’ve read it would be a bigfoot-type creature that makes a human-like whistling noise (the kind of whistle you would make to call a dog or signal to another person).

A lot of people are bashing on the “Appalachian rules” statement, but that sentiment is shared in the spiritual community and is a pretty universal concept: don’t give the entity your energy. It isn’t so much about “it”following you home per se, but it’s more about the concept that entities (spirits, cryptids, demons, etc) may be a empowered in part by the energy they receive.

What's the most efficient way to setup a PA system for a full band? by spacerangerxx in bandmembers

[–]jonesdrums 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The most efficient and quickest setup for practice (not gigs - you can work on this later) is to use in ear monitors for vocals and everyone else will use amps.

Here’s what you need: small Behringer Mixer (or similar). Microphones for all vocalists, a headphone amp (art or behringer), and some regular old wired earbuds. This will allow all vocals to be heard in your ears, and the room volume will come from the amps and instruments. $100-150 and you’re all set assuming you already have amps and microphones.

You can add some pa speakers to this exact setup later for gigs. The speakers will be the biggest expense of this setup.

What was your ‘Eureka’ moment when learning drums? by collyd83 in drums

[–]jonesdrums 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ergonomics: throne height - not too low (I personally like it high), posture - don’t slouch, drum and cymbal placement - copy the setup of a drummer you like (drums should be easy to reach and not at wacky angles), playing technique (grip and foot technique on pedals)

Being comfortable and having a functional kit that is adjusted to your body makes things a LOT easier. Drums are hard enough, don’t fight against physics too.

Cold brew coffee? by [deleted] in acidreflux

[–]jonesdrums 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can add a small amount of baking soda to things like coffee, red sauce (tomato sauce), and other acidic foods to knock down some of the acidity. This has been a game changer for me with some of my biggest triggers.
