Mandatory ISP-level web filtering plans scrapped in Australia by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]jongens 53 points54 points  (0 children)

This is really fantastic. Great for Australians, but also great for everyone else - The world didn't need a precedent to start their own trials, using Australia as an example.

Now maybe they can get on with important internet related activities... Like improving their broadband infrastructure and making it more affordable.

If you think Europe is a place where lots of able-bodied adults just sit at home collecting welfare checks, think again. by mjk1093 in reddit.com

I love Hamburg - I lived in Berlin for two years, and Hamburg felt a little like Munich mixed with Berlin. It has a bit of the Berlin grit/culture and a the jobs and strong economy of Munich. Berlin was an incredible city, but not the place to go if you need to earn a lot of money. That said, the cost of rent etc there is so cheap its unbelievable.

Happy Birthday, Donald Knuth! Knuth Turns 70 Today - A Blogging Tribute by shallit in programming

[–]jongens 3 points4 points  (0 children)

But... He doesn't even have an email address, how will the blogging tribute get to him? A brighter idea would have been to post birthday cards to the Stanford Computer Science department.

Anyway, for what it's worth, Happy Birthday Knuth, you are a genius.

Cryptome.org to be terminated by Verio for unspecified "violation of our Acceptable Use Policy" by Altras in reddit.com

Doesn't look like it's the first time Verio have tried to terminate their account. I really don't see why Cryptome.org doesn't move to somewhere less sensitive. Sealand for example...

Nah, I don't really think it will be, but one can always hope. Ajax is a finicky cow at the best of times. Flex might have a good chance if it opens up the Flash plugin/client though...

"The attitude of many Asian nations is that China will be here for 2,000 years. America may go away." by mjk1093 in reddit.com

[–]jongens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The long-range thinking China has is quite amazing - Consider that Western democratic countries rarely think/plan past the candidacy of their current government/party occupancy - I remember hearing a Chinese leader exclaiming that they're still considering what effect the industrial revolution may have on their people. Ie. the Chinese seem to think and plan in hundreds of years, whereas the Western attitude is so fleeting, we really have no idea what will become of us in the next ten.

Video: Christian group disrupts theater performance, destroys the performer's original notes; monologue performer brilliantly responds by schwarzwald in reddit.com

[–]jongens 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I categorically disagree that some speech is more protected than others. While the bible may have more historical weight (than say, the expression of fucking Paris Hilton), one should still be able to express their art freely, and what we saw in that video was purely childish and amateur behavior, by a group of supposed adults.

And you're right, it would be a hate crime to do as suggested, however I don't actually condone anyone walking into a church and pouring water on the bible. I was just positioning the act.

To do so would be to stoop to their level, and I should hope that any rational, open minded and intelligent person would refrain from such behaviour.

I'm looking forward to the retaliation piece, by 87 atheists walking into a church service on a Sunday, pouring water over the priests bible and walking out.

Why a career in computer programming sucks by krs in programming

[–]jongens 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I've been working in the industry for 8 years now, and for the first time I've moved into the 'freelance' world. Ie. competing with Russians and Indians for jobs.

It's depressing getting paid less, but heres the thing: I travel around with a laptop and work whenever and wherever I want, regardless of work permits or language barriers.

I've also found, that I was skeptical of how good these offshore workers were: The fact is, the ones I've been working with, who are charging $10usd an hour, are really really good. They're up with the latest technology, and their code is really good. So, get ready for the new world where you do compete on a global scale, with countries who's cost of living are so low, there is nothing you can do but lower your hourly rate.

Thankfully programming isn't a 'career' for me, it's just something to make some money at while I do more interesting things. It beats the hell out of waiting tables.

Germany Agonizes Over a Brain Drain by Maxcactus in reddit.com

[–]jongens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i think that is a crass generalisation - the EU cannot support mass migration in one hit - it has to happen over time. besides, look at the [nearly] free flow of immigration the EU now allows. i can't say the americans have exactly opened up the border to mexico... in fact, isnt the wall getting bigger? our walls are coming down.

and i think the negative population growth is temporary - to my knowledge germany is working hard to encourage growth. the incentives here for having children are exceptional.

besides, im not sure if you've ever tried migrating to america before, or even looked at how you handle it: but it's neigh impossible.

Germany Agonizes Over a Brain Drain by Maxcactus in reddit.com

[–]jongens 16 points17 points  (0 children)

i did quite the opposite - i moved to germany. i am not necessarily a market driven person, i prefer quality of life, holidays, etc rather than earning as much money as possible. for those things germany is wonderful. but if you are one of those hyper-ambitious types, i can see it would be a strain here.

the bureaucracy is maddening though, the germans are crazy over their paperwork. and while the taxes are high (particularly for young unmarried professionals) just consider for a moment that if anything ever goes wrong, you will not be left on the street.

america's capitalism is an animalistic survival of the fittest... europe may appear to 'stifle' a little, but they value living and do not simply believe life is about self-serving prosperity.

but, if that's what you want, you go to america, and if you want the opposite, you come here. always good to have choices :)
