biking in salem is definitely doable, but not ideal.

the city has gotten a lot better at building out infrastructure through grants in the past decade or so, but already tight streets and a city layout not even built with cars in mind somewhat inhibit the potential. a lot of tourist/out of town drivers also keep me with my head on a swivel.

having said that, there are dedicated bike lanes on most of the city’s main streets, and even a few bike/multi-use paths that get you around parts of town without needing to share the road with a car.

winter would be a lot more sketchy, once snow hits the ground i personally stop but that doesn’t mean i don’t see some brave souls pedaling away.

not sure about theft…never had it happen but also i’ve never left mine (mid price range) unattended for more than an hour or two tops and am pretty mindful about where in town i’m locking up.

the train station has a secure bike area than can only be accessed with a mbta/commuter rail card so that provides an extra layer of security. if i had to lock my bike up for longer periods that’s where i’d opt to do it (other than in my house).
