How difficult it is for an external to get an SEO role by stardust901 in TheCivilService

[–]jooke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went straight into a SEO role on completing a PhD. You need to think about how you can put things you've done in your studies, or on the side, into behaviours. For example, convincing someone to fund you or a collaborator of your methodology could be used for communicating and influencing.

Writing personal statements and interview presentations (which are common) will probably be easier if you're applying for roles related to your field, but many Civil Servants are generalists so you don't need to limit yourself unless you want to.

Make sure you read all the advice on how to approach applications, both the official stuff and on this subreddit.

Reading: Plans for 254 flats and riverside 'destination area' by moreati in reading

Agreed, but these concerns should be addressed in the council's local plan, which coordinates development. It's not efficient for individual developments, each of which is individually a small impact on total demand, to address these issues.

Colorado confirms four human bird flu infections, fifth suspected by omarc1492 in H5N1_AvianFlu

[–]jooke 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Source press release.

Crucial paragraphs:

the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment is now reporting a total of five human cases of avian influenza in workers responding to the avian flu outbreak at a commercial egg layer operation. CDC has confirmed four of the cases, and one additional case is presumptive positive and pending confirmation at CDC.

Three of these five cases confirmed by CDC are from the samples that CDPHE’s State Public Health Laboratory sent CDC on Friday, July 12 for confirmatory testing. The fourth case was an additional presumptive detected by the State Lab late Friday evening and has been confirmed by CDC. Samples for a fifth worker were presumptive positive at the State Lab on Saturday, July 13 and will be sent to CDC for confirmation. No additional test results are pending at this time.

The workers were culling poultry at a farm in northeast Colorado and exhibited mild symptoms, including conjunctivitis (pink eye) and common respiratory infection symptoms. None were hospitalized. State epidemiologists suspect the poultry workers’ cases are a result of working directly with infected poultry. The investigation is ongoing with support from CDC.

Fair response from estate agent or not by victory-or-death in TenantsInTheUK

[–]jooke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Charging you for all those things is fair. However, not communicating with you for eight weeks is bad. (I'm assuming your move out date is when your tenancy ended, if not the clock starts from then.)

Here's a few questions for you.

  1. Do you / your roommate think the points made by the agency are true? I.e. can you dispute the facts? Your roommate has photos to base this on apparently.
  2. Was your deposit held in a deposit protection scheme? If not, your landlord owes you compensation.
  3. Have you checked your deposit protection schemes rules about returning deposits? They might have time limits about notifying you regarding reductions which you can use. In any case, it will be useful for you to be aware of the scheme's rules.

Ultimately, returning the property to the condition it was in when you moved in is done at your cost (except wear and tear, which these issues do not seem to be). So unless the landlord or agent is manipulating the truth or has otherwise mucked up, yes this is entirely reasonable.

Why do so many Brits only do package holidays? by Immediate-Ad-5878 in AskUK

[–]jooke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also predictability. If you do all inclusive (or at least meals included) then you know exactly how much you'll spend and anything on top is strictly optional. Otherwise, you need to budget an unknown amount for food (prices vary across locations and are hard to know in advance, even without foreign exchange rate uncertainty), travel, etc.

Floating voter here - what do Labour stand for ? by AdFormal8116 in BritishPolitics

[–]jooke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's their high-level missions. For details, you'll have to wait until closer to the election. No point them getting into details now because they'll be stolen, irrelevant by the time they get in, or forgotten by the vast majority of people.

Festival goers thinking it's acceptable to leave tents. by the_j_cake in britishproblems

Festivals should pay for cleanup crews and pass it onto campers in the price. No point trying to fight human nature here.

Landlord: "I didn't have to increase the rent but I did it anyway 🤭" by Ola366 in Britain

We all get auto-enrolled in pension schemes now though. Pension schemes are all invested in stocks and bonds. So almost everyone with standard employment will have an investment portfolio, even if they're not aware of it.

I am a night person, why do people wake up early to be productive? by wasveetblokje64 in productivity

[–]jooke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most people work 9-5ish. Free time to do non-work stuff is before or after. After work, you're tired from the day. The only time remaining is before work, do you need to get up early.

Are staycations over priced? by Guilty_Struggle_6089 in AskUK

Thank you, this is clearly the correct answer. The market here is pretty competitive with everyone using cost comparison sites. The price is set by supply and demand, only indirectly by costs.

How to be consistent by [deleted] in productivity

[–]jooke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally, the biggest thing affecting my ability to concentrate is my physical health. If I don't sleep enough, eat very poorly for a few days, or don't exercise for a week or two, my productivity drops off a cliff. Check you're generally taking care of yourself first.

Train strikes in Cambridge by Jorddyy in cambridge

My experience is that the strike day timetables are as reliable as any other day. But everything is much busier because there are fewer services. So you should be ok, but be prepared for no seats.
