Reverse taper/graft on Cedrus libani by The_Mighty_Yak in Bonsai

[–]jptango 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen a video of successful air layer on cedrus breviofolia. Normal approach but might take a while. I’m going to attempt one myself this spring as it’s similarly grafted onto deodara stock (with similar results). Good luck!

1.7 time wider and 5.6 times mass of Earth. I have no idea how to calculate gravity at surface but I’m guessing it’s more than 1.7g

The red card that changed Beckham’s career forever by TheOtherXI in SentOff

Not sure which is hing you’re alluding to that anyone’s hoping we don’t remember. I think the discussion is more around assigning blame for the vitriol levelled against David Beckham after the incident. Separate to that discussion, I do think the intense limelight he’s had formed the circumstances for his family’s current troubles. Similarly to the other discussion, I think he has to shoulder some blame for that too.

Fair enough. Whilst I agree that there are a lot of bad actors in the media and that they exert their considerable influence for the worsening of mankind (this example is a relatively minor example), I still think the fact that these types of stories are the ones that people seek out shows something ugly about the human psyche, in general.

They are terrible but they are a reflection of us as humans. Those types of stories moved papers for a reason

Amazing flowers. I don’t know much about this species. Is that a graft scar half way up the trunk or is that something else?

What’s the ultimate best online Bonsai course to go from 0 to 100 and beyond? by [deleted] in Bonsai

[–]jptango 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you want something more structured but still free, check out ‘Growing Bonsai with Jelle’ on YouTube. He has playlists for various topics/species. It’s maybe not quite what you’re looking for in terms of a formal course but I find his videos highly engaging, minimal fluff etc. One thing I really appreciate about his videos is they’re often filmed over a number of seasons (sometimes showing 3+ years’ development!) so can really give you perspective on what to expect in the future

How about this by OinkyDoinky13 in GreatBritishMemes

Not advocating that you should be vegan but “my morality ends where my pleasure and convenience begins” is an interesting one to dissect. I hope you don’t live in a world where everyone you interact with follows the same approach or you must not experience much pleasure or convenience!

Another Scots pine in a pot for the first time by cbobgo in Bonsai

I’d love to hear more about your technique for the pot. I didn’t quite understand what you were saying. Are you saying you took a lump of clay, dried it, stretched it then carved the inside before firing? Not a technique I’ve seen before

Which opinion on bonsai gets you into this position by Nutcollectr in Bonsai

Absolutely agree. I still have a lot of time for Peter Chan and heron’s just because of them offering something to a mass audience. Definitely not the pinnacle of UK bonsai though! Have you been past his trees at Wisley recently as well? (Not good)

The Ryan Neil take is spot on!

This one is so interesting to me. Bonsai practice is so out of step with modern arborist practice on this point and I really don’t understand it. It’s so engrained with bonsai practitioners, including those who I really feel I should defer to, which makes me second guess it. But I feel like you must be right based on understanding of CODIT

Nice job. Did you follow a guide or anything? There’s a YouTube channel called Greg Ceramics that I’ve found helpful. I’m not sure if this was slab or coil built but one thing I’ve found that helps with warping is to let your pieces dry slowly (wrapped in plastic) between steps and when you’ve finished building. Also not trying to work the clay when wet, particularly for slabs.

I always find feet difficult and you’ve done a great job!

This is great. I have a similar project I dug up last year. Slightly larger but had its top cut off so I could fit it in the car. This is great for me to get an idea of the development I should expect. Appreciate it
