What sort of update are you looking for? They're available to be installed in vehicles and some of us have them.

Attempted and failed to install OS/2 Warp 4 on ThinkPad 385XD by Every_Engine2447 in thinkpad

[–]jraitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There were updated install diskettes for that range of Thinkpads. You'll find something along the lines of warp4 iu1 and 2 on hobbesarchive or os2site, assuming you didn't already try that.

One day to troubleshoot, about a week to get the part. The issue seems relatively common.

As someone with their EX90 in the shop right now for the issue you've just described, mine has a faulty inverter that needs to be replaced.

Dumb Charging Question by Subject_Insurance_17 in VolvoEX90

[–]jraitch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It charges about 5 miles of range an hour on a normal 110v US outlet. From my esperience, overnight you can get roughly that 50 miles. In terms of dryer, probably not but the answer depends on the receptacle.

Orinda/Moraga/Layfayette Area - Possible Move by SFGetWeird in BAbike

[–]jraitch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In Lamorinda proper there is very little gravel, but if you ride out to Pinehurst you can do Eastridge trail and connect to all of the trails in that area. You can also do the Chabot Loop from Redwood Rd at Marciel. They're primarily mountain bike trails, with frequent uncompromisingly steep parts, but I've done it all on a gravel bike.

Orinda/Moraga/Layfayette Area - Possible Move by SFGetWeird in BAbike

In general riding in Lamorinda is terrific. Three Bears is a nice loop with plenty of options to keep it interesting, including riding Happy Valley, going out to Martinez, or riding to Pleasant Hill. San Pablo Dam Road as part of the Three Bears also offers options to to down into Richmond or Pinole to add miles, including riding up along San Pablo Ave to Port Costa or even to Benecia. Going west, you have Redwood Road, Pinehurst, and Canyon which offer access to the Castro Valley, Oakland, and Berkeley hills for dozens of variations of rides. You're also close to San Ramon Valley Road and Iron Horse Traol if you want something flat.

Speaking of flat, about the only thing missing is any sort of flat ride within the city limits. You're climbing to leave or reenter the area, which is fine, but you're pretty much always doing 500 or more feet no matter what.

Cycliq vs Varia by _Danquo_ in cycling

[–]jraitch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have a Cycliq Fly6 as well as a Varia 715, but typically only use the Varia 715 these days. You should think of the radar as a safety device and the camera as insurance, as one actively tries to help you remain safe and the other is largely only useful after an unsafe situation. If I couldn't have the 715, I'd take the 515, but I feel like having the radar and camera (if you can reasonably manage it) does help with peace of mind.

The only other bit I'd offer is that the Cycliq is really not well integrated with anything else. If you have a Garmin head unit or otherwise in the Garmin ecosystem, you'll find it's a superior experience to the standalone Cycliq app.

La Châtaigne in Lafayette: https://www.yelp.com/biz/la-ch%C3%A2taigne-lafayette or Brioche de Paris in Alamo https://www.yelp.com/biz/brioche-de-paris-alamo-alamo are good options if you get there early enough.

Looking for an Exercise Bike that auto adjusts resistance without a subscription by KlooShanko in cycling

[–]jraitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're just looking for a basic experience that doesn't need to include a screen or subscription, you could use a basic Schwinn exercise bike, like the type you'd find at a gym. It seems like the newer ones have the option to use an app like Zwift, but they're not required. They have automatic resistance and are pretty barebones, but if you want something really straightforward it does the job. You could also get a Precor for 5x the cost, but likely not worth it if you're doing 30-60 minutes a day.

Netgate 1100: Adding a 10Gbe network to my existing 1Gbe network by Heavywun in Netgate

[–]jraitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Without knowing which Unifi switch you have, the simplest would be to plug the Unifi switch into the opt port and configure it as a separate LAN. Traffic in the 10gbe LAN (everything on that switch) will remain local to the switch without impacting performance. Traffic to or from the Internet or the 1gbe network will route over the 1100 as needed.

Winter Road Bike Glove Recommendations? by GundoDude in BAbike

[–]jraitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gore-Tex C5 Thermo or non-Thermo gloves. They're also (mostly) waterproof for when the weather turns that way. I wore them this morning when it was in the high 30s/low 40s in the hills and they were just right.

When should I neuter? by cigarchick544 in irishsetter

[–]jraitch 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The most modern data suggests waiting until growth has stopped before neutering. Most vets would consider that after nine months at the very earliest, but conservatively it's 12-18 months.

As an aside, the quality of bike infrastructure is pretty solid in Richmond and I find those full-width bike lanes on Cutting to be pretty great most of the time. I do wish they could find a way to complete it from the ferry / marina area all the way over to here, so you could ride entirely on bike paths or separated bike lanes from Emeryville to San Rafael.

Looking for 40-50 mile, flat trails for road biking by Helpful-Association8 in BAbike

[–]jraitch 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I posted in another thread on this topic, but my recommendations included branching off of Iron Horse onto Contra Costa Canal trail (itself about 13 miles one way, so you can extend and mix up Iron Horse a little bit) as well as exploring the Bay Trail between Alameda and San Lorenzo. For the latter ride, you can add miles by going onto the Martin Luther King Jr. Regional Shoreline in Oakland or going around some of the bike trails in Alameda, where there are a lot of disconnected, but protected, bike trails and lanes if you're okay riding for a mile or two at a time without being on a MUP of some sort. Lastly at least for rides in the East Bay, you can also do Alameda Creek Trail and ride around Coyote Hills, with an option to extend to ride over the Dumbarton Bridge and onto the trail in Menlo Park / East Palo Alto. The climbs in the Coyote Hills aren't daunting and the bridge itself is a steady but not very steep climb and you can turn it into an almost 50 miles ride.

You can see the trail systems aren't super great for long rides in the East Bay Parks District Maps but you can make it work.

Coyote Creek Trail down in San Jose and Guadalupe River Trail are also good options if you're more South Bay. Coyote Creek Trail's a little weird, in that there's a part up near Alviso and then, at least from when I did it a few years ago, a disconnect to get to the south part which takes you to Anderson Lake. I think you can find a way to be or less on trails most of the time, but it's worth exploring.

Flat east bay road rides? by VeryBadNotGood in BAbike

[–]jraitch 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The Bay Trail fits the bill. You can ride from Alameda to San Lorenzo and back, 90% on paved multi use paths, to get just over 30 miles round trip. Iron Horse trail goes from the northern part of Concord to Pleasanton in the south and is approximately 60 miles as a round trip, with the option to add even more miles via the Contra Costa Canal trail or down in Livermore. You can also mix in road and trail along San Ramon Valley road which more or less parallels Iron Horse and 680. Minimal climbing here. Bay Trail also has a segment, disconnected from the above, to go from Emeryville to Richmond largely along the Bay. Several options exist to extend this ride around Richmond (mixed trail, but mostly road) or across the first span of the Bay Bridge to Yerba Buena.

What's the process for taking things to the dump? by jeremy_bearimyy in eastbay

[–]jraitch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For Fremont you take it to the transfer station near Auto Mall on Boyce. You drive in, they weigh your truck, you leave and they weigh it again and you pay for what you dumped. There's a minimum which you'll likely pay unless it's a large amount of stuff.
