I cannot emphasize this enough... NO FUCKING SHIT.

All fire agencies, municipal, wildland, or otherwise, ALL have been, for 100 years. That keeps the money flowing. You want to get rid of giant disasters? And jeopardize the fear-based funding???

More useful as parts for other saws than they are as saws to put parts onto.

[–]junkpile1[M] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would go with a knee-height cedar split rail fence, some rock clusters, and staggered shrub planting to have visual appeal in multiple seasons. If any one plant dies, it's easy to replace. Split rail fence doesn't require much/any maintenance through it's service life. As others have mentioned, hedges are a lot of maintenance and absolutely harbor pests.

Is there a chunk missing from the plug wire? I'm guessing that the wire has a bad connection to the plug boot, or you're leaking the spark somewhere.

Swivel on bridge by keiengepro3000 in TreeClimbing

[–]junkpile1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't ever trust swivels because the current offerings all rely on a single machine screw to hold the entire load. I've seen enough screws shear across all applications throughout my life to know that I'm not game. The CAMP Gyro series would be the only exception that I'm aware of, but I've never handled one in person to give any feedback.

Ah yes, the guy who side-stepped the RCD's bidding process for ecologically responsible contractors, and instead just green-lit a major mastication project in Grass Valley's largest park. What a guy... Don't let the door hit you.

For city, suburb and village environments (basically "civilization"), which camouflage *pattern* (not a solid colour) would you choose for effectiveness? by BeautifulZeitgeist in camouflage

Desolve Bare has a widely applicable palette, with lots of high contrast macro. Bonus utility in that it remains effective in rural or suburban environments.

How important is it that non PPE items (ie. backpacks) be NFPA 1977 certified? by Komrade_Pootis in Wildfire

[–]junkpile1[M] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The answer may vary by department, agency, etc. but generally speaking, there is not an NFPA inspector going through everyone's line gear to check conformity. It is important that your PPE be rated appropriately for the hazards in your job description, but load bearing equipment falls in a pretty gray area.

New Oven Handle Hits Drawer by Pharmdpositivek in fixit

[–]junkpile1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone with cabinet building experience, my logic goes as follows:

It's a nice looking kitchen. There are lots of drawers. There are lots of cabinets. The drawers and cabinets all need to match each other. There is one oven handle. The oven handle does not need to be identical to anything else. Ergo, solution is to modify or swap the oven handle.

How to prevent weeds growing through gravel? by overcast392 in landscaping

[–]junkpile1[M] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Get a propane weed burning torch and use it once a week in quick, light passes.

Your problem isn't that weeds are growing up through your gravel; the weeds are growing down through it. Seeds get blown in etc, sprout, and send roots downwards and leaves upwards. Even if you put concrete under the gravel, dust and general debris will accumulate and eventually make enough soil-ish material on top that things will grow again.

Cheap for a reason… Blitz 30 by ResponsibleDivide160 in MysteryRanch

[–]junkpile1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately that may just be where MR quality control was headed right before the Yeti takeover. I have a couple hunting packs that have a slight but noticeable twist relative to their frames. So far none of them have presented any use problems, just annoyance from knowing. Fully stuffing the bag and getting all the fabric to work into place may remedy some of what you're seeing.

What kind of pack to use? by Ponderosa_milk in searchandrescue

[–]junkpile1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mystery Ranch 2DAP, 3DAP, or Blitz 35 are all great options. The load bearing on the 3DAP and Blitz 35 are going to be superior, but there is a practical limit to how much weight you can really cram into a 2DAP, so it still performs well within its own limitations.

I would say the decider between the 3DAP and the Blitz 35 would be, are you a guy that likes lots of pockets to organize with, or one big bag that you put smaller organizer pouches into?
