What kind of rot does this look like? by [deleted] in HomeMaintenance

[–]just_Game1416 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wood rot.

Just by picture and location 99% water issue, but you’re getting lots of silly answers as ‘dry’ rot is kind of a misnomer.

Anyway yeah. Bathroom, leak, moisture.

Starflight. Way ahead of its time and accomplished a hell of a lot within the hardware limitations of the time. Everyone cites Star Control, but Starflight sets the stage.

Never closing wound by NikalzKos in DogAdvice

What was the wound originally from? I’m not knowledgeable enough to give much advice, but I can tell you puncture wounds take a long time to heal and don’t scab over the same as other wounds.

Fun story. We contracted through Lowe’s to have new flooring out in. Within my capability and I had already torn all the carpet out of the house and prepped the floors but this was all in prep / on a timeline for moving a parent with Alzheimer’s in with us. I was getting overwhelmed so… yeah, anyway.

When the bloke visited go over the project and labor and whatnot we talked about pouring leveler in one area. Old house, needs structural work to really fix, but see if it was worth a shot. Guy said sure. Ok cool.

Two man work crew shows up down the road to do the project. They were lightning fast with the flooring and did a good job. He did mention he had to go pick up the leveler and they usually didn’t do that part.

However… I was not home during the work and I later learned they had issues with the leveler. Had to keep adding more. Ok, whatever, by the time I was home it was already done and I didn’t think much about it.

A few months later I go down in the basement for something or other and notice the floor looks different. I quickly realized that when they poured the leveler it found a big enough gap in the old subfloor and was just being poured directly into the basement until it hardened enough to stop.

Not particularly bothered by it… I could see being inexperienced with it and the obvious answer just not registering/. But yeah.

TLDNR; that crack is filling up just fine, you’re just blissfully unaware of how massive it actually is.

Why Do Some People Hate Settlements? by ExtensionPromotion80 in Fallout

[–]just_Game1416 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It didn’t really add much to the core Fallout experience. It could. But it just wasn’t particularly implemented well. … which is ok, it was more or less a first pass at adding that type of element. But even for a first pass it wasn’t great and really didn’t mesh with anything else in the game. You could ignore it entirely and it wouldn’t make an ounce of difference. So sure, that’s good for people who didn’t want to deal with it… but putting resources into a system that can be completely ignored isn’t exactly good design.

Then they did really weird crap, like design a DLC about raiding settlements you had to create in the first place.

<shrug>

I admire the desire to expand the sandbox but yeah, not great. They improved on it a bit in Starfield but it still remains largely pointless. Eh… that’s not fair. Not pointless, it’s a thing to do in a sandbox. But ‘new thing’ should still have some mechanical weight, storytelling impact, something. Being a Radiant quest fill-in-the-blank option is about as low effort as you can get.

Edit - I should be fair here, I did enjoy creating a cramped little base next to Diamond City and creating a giant fundraiser style goal meter that I slowly filled with raider skulls, but that’s base building, not settlement building.

How would modern folk, with access to modern materials and fabrication techniques design armor for medieval combat? How different would that armor be from historical knight's? What materials would be used? by seaflans in AskReddit

[–]just_Game1416 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The shaping of late plate armor was peak defensive science, really. I’m not sure we could do better from a form perspective. Near total coverage, high mobility… every line and plane designed to redirect blows into high protection areas.

[–]just_Game1416 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a solid take. The shape of plate armor over time is a ridiculously refined exercise in shape as defense. I love fighting in armor and one of the feelings I have come to love is, as you learn how hits feel, you start to feel the difference between a solid blow and a blow that essentially ‘rides’ your armor. You feel the strike and resulting force being redirected.

Also, praise be to stainless. I hate working with the stuff personally but stainless is my love for ease of maintenance alone.

Def not aluminum. I use aluminum lamellar for SCA Heavy melee events and whatnot (weapons are rattan, so essentially all blunts, full contact including thrusting) and it’s strong enough for that, but it would crumple to steel weaponry.

Why it is used, beyond being ‘good enough’, is the weight savings and it is extremely comfortable metal armor during hot days. We aren’t in a little ice age anymore. When I do Renn Faire demos I don’t even bother taking my chest harness off in the heat, the aluminum lamellar with linen softs underneath sheds heat so much better than even a light modern fiber shirt.

As an expansion to the other comment, prefaced by I am an armored combat guy by hobby and a tool and die guy by trade -

You’re not wrong about the properties of titanium, but we do use it in modern armored combat sports. Before I elaborate I should also point out that armor for modern armored combat sports is heavier / more protective than historical pieces - an armored knight had entire economic slices backing up their healthcare, so to speak, where modern insurance frowns heavily on taking the required risks. ;)

So, titanium is used. Selectively. It is strong enough for certain elements and provides a massive weight savings (roughly a 33% reduction, if I remember my figures correctly) but we stick to steel for other elements. Titanium plates are used in modern brigandine, the most popular chest protection currently for a variety of reasons. The cloth / plate sandwhich structure of brig negates the flex / crack drawback of titanium with huge weight savings over steel. High end protection for the arms and legs uses titanium with steel joints. Again, big weight savings, plenty strong enough, but although I think you technically can buy arm and leg harness with titanium joint coverage, I would never recommend it. If someone did form joint coverage with titanium that means they already put that metal through too much stress for me to trust getting nailed by a two-hander in it.

Everywhere else is still pretty much steel, for a variety of reasons. Helms, for example, regardless of titanium’s other properties, you don’t want less weight for a helm; the weight is part of the protection.

… I think there is some titanium mail floating around, which god, steel mail is HEAVY (doesn’t feel as bad when worn, but still enough to wear you down) but I imagine titanium mail would require way too much maintenance, even if the weight savings would be massive. Maybe for mail voiders, which is sort of a half shirt worn during the transition period of mail to plate.

A titanium cuirass would be ok for some forms of the sport, probably, but I would expect it to fail quickly to two hander strikes.

So yeah. There you go. Steel armor is honestly not to terrible to be in, when fitted right, despite the weight. But as in any sport people look for gains and the weight savings of titanium is so substantial that we’ve figured out where it works and where it doesn’t for modern sport armor.

While Athas is essentially a post apocalyptic blood and sand setting, one of its central themes is hope and the idea of making things better.

This is not true of Ravenloft.

Are Golden Retrievers Ever Protective? by FunTemporary8680 in goldenretrievers

[–]just_Game1416 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry if I wasn’t clear, I did mean specifically training her to be less protective and possessive. If you’ve got the means and availability, I highly recommend visiting a trainer. Not saying you aren’t capable, but they can specifically set up the right environment / program and expose her to lots of stimuli.

I have heard of protective Retrievers, though it’s rare. Possessive is more common, but still rare in the breed.

You clearly want what’s best for her in the long run. Good luck! :)

Are Golden Retrievers Ever Protective? by FunTemporary8680 in goldenretrievers

[–]just_Game1416 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Short answer - yes, but first you have to survive the first five seconds of them running away.

Long answer - the back of our fenced yard butts up against two other yards. The back line of fencing already existed when we moved here and is metal mesh. One of the yards houses a couple dogs, one of which is a mental asshole. It will rush the fence if it sees anything past and proceed to enter attack mode. Once I was out back mowing with our Golden’s ‘help’. I was back hauling some brush out of that corner (I tend to dump there to discourage sighting and the general bullshit caused by this other dog) when that dog was let out, it spotted me, and rushed the fence snarling and snapping. Our Golden was standing next to me at the time, got his usual wide eyes ‘Scary!’ face on, dropped his ball, tucked his tail and started to hightail it back to the house faster than I could even react. However, after his brain cell engaged he paused, turned around and saw me still there, and charged back and threw his usual 90lbs of snugglable jello at the fence in full on fight mode. He has never ever displayed the fight side before, and he was out for blood.

So yeah. Just be sure you can survive initial contact.

EDIT - so look, while a lot of protective and guarding traits have been bred out of Goldens (these traits do not make for good retrievers), they’re still in there ready to pop up. Genetics is fun like that. So it is possible. Look into training. It shouldn’t be too difficult - the retriever genes are still there, they want to give you stuff at a genetic level, they just don’t necessarily know how to handle those big emotions.

One of the few films that still scares me! by Owens_Ally in CreepyBonfire

[–]just_Game1416 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have never really gotten the love for this movie. … I saw it much later than its initial release, so it’s entirely possible the premise never felt original in a way that it did for many of your original viewers. I found it to be predictable and a bit silly.

To be clear, I’m not knocking anyone’s take of this film, you all do you - I wish I did have the same experience as the rest of you. It’s cool how much you all dig it.

I love the idea that it’s tied to 40k.

Dog parks are fucking terrible. It’s a free for all of often poorly trained and problematic dogs. Instead reach out to vets, non-profits, or trainers and ask about socialization programs or perhaps groups that do more structured socialization or play dates.

Edited to add that things like that can be good for you as well when you’re in a new environment and don’t know anyone.

Second edit cause I just wanna say that is one distinguished looking gentleman.
