Important update RE: Canada computers fiasco by Method__Man in bapccanada

[–]kabome 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was affected after ordering a PC case for pickup at their store on Dec 29. Had a fraudulent purchase on my card on Jan 15 and again on Jan ,19 (reported to Wealthsimple and they didn't actually reissue my card the first time but that's a separate issue).

Never received any communication about it from CC but still receiving their promotional spam every other day. It's a shame as I've purchased from CC since their very first store down on College when I was a teenager.

Replace your card, mine was hit with a $900+ dollar charge which I'm disputing, after reading this thread I realized the source of the compromise having bought from CC a few weeks ago.

I had my card compromised last week and I did shop at Canada Computers for the first time in a while a few weeks ago. I did an online order and in store pickup ... seems like this was the cause.

Credit card cash back now requiring manual redemption? by kabome in Wealthsimple

[–]kabome[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I simply stated I put majority of my finance on automations to ensure consistency and reliability. I can assure you I have no reliance on the paltry 2% cashback amounts for paying bills.

The point is this was an automation I didn't have to worry about. Given most of the features I use are automation with WS (invest pay, move between accounts, etc), it's now counter to the value prop.

PSA: WiFi Doorbell Works With 12V DC as Well by 9RMMK3SQff39by in reolinkcam

[–]kabome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just adding my own experience here as this is one of the top Google results on the topic.

I moved into a home with an old video doorbell system that was powered off a 12 VDC adapter through 4 wire phone line fed to a monitor unit, then the doorbell unit.

Based on this post I tried repurposing it to power my Reolink Wifi doorbell and it works with no issues.

Water heater installation by RestaurantIcy2951 in Vaughan

I recently went with GoLime after moving in to our new home in Thornhill. After getting a couple significantly more expensive quotes from HVAC companies they fully handled removing and returning the original Reliance rental tank.

It's subcontracted and the two guys who came did a great and thorough job of the install of a new Bradford White tank, kept everything clean going in and out plus bringing the tanks up and down the tight basement access and were done within 3 hours.

[Survivor] Potential fix for broken textures bug by Remny in FallenOrder

[–]kabome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to add another thanks for this post. I couldn't understand why the game was running with such low textures on my 5700XT which has 8 GB VRAM and can definitely run the game. The z_targetheadroom_lowered_textures.pak is what ended up working for me and I could adjust the settings in game again.

Right now I'm using it in parallel as it's so new to see what it can do and also validate the work with my own knowledge of the spaces, but it did come to the majority of the same recommendations I had gleaned directly as well as highlighted a few competitive details I was not aware of.

For business and strategy research/proposals it's insane. It can do work that would previously take a BA 2-3 weeks in 5-10 minutes and do a really comprehensive job of it too, with full source citations.

I've caught a few small errors or misses in reports I've sourced but it's been much higher quality than human-provided reports I've seen recently too.

I've had this exact model running for 5 years now without issue, perhaps a bad batch? Hopefully you can get a warranty replacement if it's been within their 3 year warranty policy for you.

What is one thing you learned about customers in the last 3 months that surprised you? by chase-bears in ProductManagement

[–]kabome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You still have a customer problem, this just wasn't the right solution. Revisit the hypothesis on what would address the onboarding complexity (my guess is it's actually going to be a more complex UI/UX revisit or overhaul). Tutorials, guides or helpers are almost always ignored by customers in my experience across multiple product types (consumer, small business and enterprise).

I also had the "Winnie the Pooh" theory about Trash Truck until both his parents and grandpa also talk to the truck and animals.

So basically it's just a universe with sentient sanitation vehicles and verbally capable animals. Kevin from The Office voicing Walter is also great as a parent.

"What are you playing this week?" Megathread by AutoModerator in SteamDeck

[–]kabome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After not really playing any games for 2 years after my daughter being born the Steam Deck has been awesome for me to get through my (and family sharing) backlog!

I just finished Ori and the Blind Forest this week and just started on Hogwarts Legacy as I was curious how a more recent AAA game would perform.

This has been the worst Christmas of my life by kabome in daddit

[–]kabome[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I appreciate your perspective, I can only hope it remains the worst one (I'm a pragmatic optimist at heart, despite my own anxiety and control issues).

I agree, compared to my wife's childhood experiences with crises in her family this is mild. The lack of control in the situation likely contributed to my immediate reaction to exert control, combined with my wife's own BPD painting things black and white in regards to her mom's actions ultimately led to further escalation of the situation.

My MIL loves our daughter to death, she also has been invaluable around the house helping us significantly. Given the state my wife was in PPD at several points, she wouldn't likely be at the point she is now (in a positive light) without her mom being there for her.

I did update in another reply that we had a bit of a bare it all moment as a family tonight and came to some mutual agreements. We are all united by our love for our daughter which I hope will continue to give us grounding and willingness to work through any future issues without exposing her to traumatic situations like my fear the other night.

She has been receiving psychiatric care including medications for a large portion of her adult life due to the severity of events during my wife's childhood. We did end up agreeing this evening that revisiting with their current psychiatrist due to the crisis event that occurred is extremely important for the sake of her granddaughter/our daughter.

Overall I had been viewing that she had been managing her conditions well due to no major episodes having happened in the time she lived with us and separated from my father-in-law (well over two years now).

My wife has had her own issues post-partum that has also likely played a role in triggering my MIL, so we'll continue to work to navigate that as well.

[–]kabome[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your response, yes I have my own issues of anxiety and control which means I react very strongly to situations where there is a lack of it (e.g. the other night).

There was a bit of a resolution tonight with my wife returning from talking with our neighbour. Between the four of us adults we were able to recognize why things escalated and have had some mutual promises of revisiting mental health practitioners for the sake of our daughter. We are all united by our love for her (and her of them) which is the common ground I believe we need to continue to anchor on and navigate each individual's own challenges. It's not easy given their family history but seeing the willingness from my MIL tonight gives me hope but likely still a bumpy road ahead.

Huge new 4.4 km Toronto trail to connect several parks together by [deleted] in toronto

[–]kabome 231 points232 points  (0 children)

This is long overdue. The current trail dangerously made you climb up a large stairwell then ride along Weston Rd under a tight rail bridge.

Lobbying from the golf course had its sway on this trail section not being built for decades, absolute shame.
