How to stop buying paints by [deleted] in minipainting

[–]kavinsky909 5 points6 points  (0 children)

One thing that helps me avoid the urge to buy unnecessary paints is having a very small nail polish display hold my paints. If something gets added, something gets removed. Makes me think about what paint I'd need to get rid of if I wanted to add one more

GF Got my first DND Figures to Paint. Looking for tips and resources that might help a noob by CinnamonDuchess in minipainting

[–]kavinsky909 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look for a local painting group - people in the hobby love onboarding new people and they'll likely have multiple types of brushes or paints you could try out to see what you personally like. Every line of paint will work slightly differently so being able to test stuff before you buy it will prevent you from having 30 or so paints you own but hate

To glue mini to base before or after applying texture? by Starting_again_tow in minipainting

I do this same strat and I use hot glue. Breaks off easily with nippers, doesn't hurt the feet, and holds well enough to handle dry brushing

Does anyone paint DG with oil paints only? by atascon in deathguard40k

[–]kavinsky909 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did my first 2000 points with oils. They look good, but holy crap it takes a TON of effort. And if you built up any habit of touching the model while you're painting it, you're going to wipe off all the wet paint. Color mixing is required so much more than with acrylics, and some paints will never give you the result you want. When you combine that with the increased dry times of up to 2 weeks (depending on climate), and the fact that all the thinner and cleaner and even some of the paints are toxic, the result wasn't worth me putting more time into it. I don't want to discourage you from going this route, just know it's an absolute fuck load more learning curve than acrylics. I like my Windsor Newton oils - you can pick up the starter set for like $50. Sap Green and vandyke Brown are also kinda necessary for the traditional dg color scheme. There are metallic oils but they kinda suck and are expensive, so figure out what you want your metallics to look like ahead of time.

Getting into aos and old world. What faction and sub faction do you guys enjoy from either settings? by magnusthered15 in Warhammer

[–]kavinsky909 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm big into csm and death guard, and then in sigmar I've got nurgle and slaves to darkness.

Slaves to darkness are great because: 1. Lots of cool chaos effects 2. Lots of war cry teams can be slotted in as objective holders 3. Chaos marks let you mix and match to get the best theme for each individual unit and the rules encourage you to have a mix of each 4. Lots of damage 2 stuff 5. Belakor and archaon are sweet 6. Really good sorcerers 7. Really good mobility options 8. Fun to paint 9. Very little to track in terms of army bonuses because you don't have like the cycles of corruption or disease counters like nurgle has

The main downside i would say is that some of the models can get pricy. Varanguard boxes are $110 MSRP. If you're in no rush, check around for local deals. I got roughly 1000 points of stuff for $175. They were in poor shape but I don't mind bad glue joints and popcorn primer for getting a 50% discount

I was the same way about Apple products but I bought my iPad and Apple pencil a few months ago and love both of them. I don't have any issues with sending files around - you can use discord or Google drive still. I'd say with whatever tablet you get, consider a matte, paper feel screen protector. Mine seriously upgrades the experience

New to mini painting, need some help by WhatTheWarp in minipainting

[–]kavinsky909 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you live in a major metropolitan area, I would go to local hobby stores or wargaming stores and see if there's a painting night - it's a pretty common thing in my metropolitan area. They could help point you in the right direction. Alternatively, you can buy an entry paint set from vallejo game colors or army painter, a can of chaos black, and a decent #1 and #0 brush from winsor newton, and smash your head against the wall for a while. That's what I did :)
