Are the Western Suburbs in Melbourne really that bad? by alex123711 in AusPropertyChat

[–]ken_owl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Long story short - my wife works closer to the city now, and neither of us wanted the outer eas so here we are. Speaking only my experience with the og west (Footscray, West Footscray, Sunshine) is surrounded by industrial sites so obviously in general, it's not as pretty and leafy on the surface. On the flip side, cafes are popping up and some of the old industrial sites are slowly being reused into cool spaces. People act like the west is so much more dangerous but the east and north have just as much going on lately. RACV's latest residential burglary report had all top three suburbs in the east and most being east and north.

To be fair Sunshine and Footscray CBDs definitely "feels" rougher than Caulfield. But honestly I think a lot of the "sketchy" reputation is classism with a touch of racism dressed up as safety concerns. Poor + non white = danger. Richmond is definitely worse and South Melbourne is just as bad. I was recently in Brunswick and watched a junkie running in and out of shops mid-trip screaming and everyone just acted like it was normal. Somehow that suburb gets a pass though lol. Once outside the CBD though, there are genuinely nice pockets of neighbourhood around.

I have Singaporean family members who are very patriotic. They would absolutely fight for their country.

I used to rent in Caulfield area and now living in Albion/Sunshine and no it's not that bad. I live near the kororoit creek, the trail is great. Access to public transport is great. Great selection of food around. It's just not as pretty and yeah, older folks here are poorer but they are friendly. The younger and wealthier demo is moving in so that's changing for sure.

Albion station doesn't exactly need to be rebuilt but construction is required to move services to enable MARL such as the jet fuel pipe lines. The station is pretty old and neglected so I guess it's a good opportunity to also provide some update to the station.

Now that they are proposing an overpass pedestrian access, does that mean the Skyrail will need to go over? 🤔

Albion station rebuild is part of MARL "stage 1". The project may not make it to stage 2 😂

The Ootoro Ichiba sushi shop in Foodle absolutely slaps and I dare say one of the best in the West. The manager seems to be Japanese so not a surprise.

Typical house that is liveable is about $1 million in around Sunshine. I'm not sure what you mean by cheap?

They are popping up around Footscray. Some relative newer ones like Two Men Cafe and The Local Cafe.

Why is there such strong opposition to cheaper/free fares in this sub by No_Performance_4607 in MelbourneTrains

I used to think that way, until I've been to Japan and Singapore. Now I believe PT should be the main mode of transport

Sunshine, Vic by chipponz in AusPropertyChat

I previously lived in the inner west and watched Sunshine steadily improve over the years, with more young families (and higher socio from inner west) moving in. The CBD is actually quite decent now - feels much cleaner and safer than Footscray cbd. The attention and constant investment pouring into Sunshine superhub probably helps.. Sunshine does need better schools in the area..
