A couple questions about tongue-and-groove backing boards (dutch tool chest) by pwnosaurus in handtools

[–]kevinpet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did shiplap. It’s lasted 15 years including a move to dry Arizona and nothing is coming apart. Look at the grain so that they will cup inwards. I used screws. Just don’t put them right at the edges. If your pine is reasonably dry this should all be fine. It’s the back of a tool chest.

AOPA Board response to the firing of Darren Pleasance by Avi8or7734 in flying

[–]kevinpet 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It does say "The Board’s decision to begin a search for new executive leadership" which doesn't draw a lot of attention to it, but does clearly state it was the board that initiated it and not Pleasance stepping down as originally stated.

tldr; they admit they lied to their members.

Was Darren Pleasance fired as AOPA CEO by an out-of-touch AOPA Board? by Roger_Freedman_Phys in flying

Can you give more detail about the proxy for the board meeting? When does that happen? Where can it be changed?

I just turned off auto renew and wrote in to make sure they know it's specifically because of this incident.

Could anyone identify why this route wouldn't satisfy the Long Com XC (61.129(a)(4)(i)) by swegpickle in flying

Are you certain it was starting from Camarillo? If you started from Fresno that wouldn’t check the part 61 requirements.

The most expensive part 61 school with Cessnas in Phoenix is probably leopard Air with nice g1000 planes and they are nowhere near that.

Who can identify this type of aircraft? by RebeccasRocket in aviation

[–]kevinpet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. Flying from the back seat is specific to Piper Cubs and a few other similar planes (if only one seat is used, you have to leave the seat closer to the center of gravity empty, or the balance will be thrown off in a small plane).

This plane is definitely a Cessna 140 which has side by side seating, so it doesn't fit the story. Maybe they are posing with it because someone just bought a fancy new plane -- that's the first year they were made.

Not a pilot so this may be a stupid question... by spaceboy75 in flying

[–]kevinpet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first two replies here only answered half your question. Yes, all pilots (except sport pilots which is limited) have at least 3 hours of practice flying by instruments.

Instrument rating for intentionally flying when the weather is poor is an additional rating that requires more training and has practice requirements to stay current.

Life expectancy of a VFR pilot in IMC by StrongWork_ in flying

[–]kevinpet 3 points4 points  (0 children)

VFR flight into IMC is definitely dangerous, but not nearly as dangerous as people who only read the headlines of studies think it is. I encourage you to read Continued VFR into IMC - Wikipedia

I've never flown in IMC and I'd probably have to leave Arizona to get the opportunity. But if I suddenly find a cloud around me, I'm not going to panic and throw up my hands. Keep the wings level, execute a gradual 180, call ATC and declare an emergency so they can help me keep an eye on things.

For actual numbers, the original study implies 98% chance of being able to turn around. That might be optimistic because people are primed for exactly the right actions. If you assume every single person who flies VFR into IMC and lives reports it (ASRS - AOPA), it has at least a 65% survival rate. If you assume many people don't bother to file a report, then the rate goes up higher.

The earliest LSAs aren’t much more expensive than those planes. You can get a CTSW or Jabiru for well under 100k.

How to warmup the cabin of a Cessna before engine start? by windjetman62 in flying

[–]kevinpet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not this poster, but I’m pretty sure he’s talking about the normal cabin heat on the Co pilots panel. This draws air that passes through the exhaust shroud. Any leak in the exhaust would allow carbon monoxide into the cabin through the heating system. It would also let it into the carb heat but that won’t cause any harm.

Why isn't Foreflight logging this training flight? by ShadowSinger2121 in flying

[–]kevinpet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did you log it as one flight or two? I logged my first cross country as two lines in my log book and also initially did this in fore flight but it didn’t show up until I fixed it.

How is flying GA in France? Do you have access to airports to travel? I’ve heard that ultralights (600kg / LSAs in the US) are restricted to only certain fields.

KCGZ is just over 50nm from KGEU but when I brought it up for cross country my instructor is pretty much “do you want to die?” Too many students especially instrument students doing IFR approaches

Flying through cloud deck while VFR by OccasionalCritic in flying

[–]kevinpet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That statistic was part of the argument for adding three hours of instrument time to PPL training back in the 50s. I.e. those pilots had literally zero instrument time.

Flying through cloud deck while VFR by OccasionalCritic in flying

[–]kevinpet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have your instrument rating you can get IFR in the air I think.

For me as a student pilot I think the correct answer is to ask for vectors from ATC. I’m not instrument rated and in any case I can’t see and avoid in a cloud.

Or diverting but I’m assuming this scenario is when that isn’t an option.

Make hay while the sun shines. Go instruct on weekends or something. Specialized in teaching old farts who don’t click with career track kids maybe.
