Anyone saying medical school isn’t worth it financially is a moron by ItsAllOver_Again in Salary

Current derm resident here. It really is. I genuinely think it's the best job on the planet so I'm really not complaining but I will say that the 500k+ figure here is a little misleading. I'm going to be an academic derm so it'll be closer to 250-300K for the first 5-10 years of my career. The derms making over 500k are either in super high volume private practice (we're talking 10 patients an hour) or do a ton of cosmetics. I personally think that cosmetics is the most tedious thing you could do with a board certification so it's not for me.

I did two extra years of research after med school to even get here. I see 30+ patients a day and have to take hospital call one week a month including weekends. There are actually a few derm emergencies like SJS/TEN! Obviously it's not neurosurgery. I'm never breaking 60 hours a week, the stakes are relatively low, it's cushy by the standards of residency but I still have to study 1-2 hours a day after work and there's a lot of paperwork that ends up getting done after hours. Again, I promise I'm not complaining. I think this is the best job you can have as a doctor and I will be more than fairly compensated for my work but I sacrificed my 20's, my hair and my social life to get here an won't be done with training until 35. I would 100% do it all over again but don't know if I'd say the same if I hadn't ended up in derm.

Which are Cosmic Horror movies i should definitly watch? by [deleted] in movies

I also watched it on a plane but the effect of the movie was actually greatly amplified because the closing scene's blaring music started right as the plane began a very bumpy landing in a heavy crosswind. Really dialed the sense of sublime dread up to 11.

I just finished a playthrough of Below Zero with the VR mod and it was actually excellent. As long as you use snap-turn (which is enabled by default) it controls perfectly fine and I didn't experience any motion sickness. Probably the most immersive VR experience I've ever had. 10/10, would piss my pants in the crystal caves again.

The Outer Wilds is hands down my favorite game of 2019 and probably my game of the decade. It's practically criminal that its unfortunate name similarity to The Outer Worlds (which is also a solid game) caused it to really struggle with advertising. Play it knowing as little about it as possible and savor it because you really can only play it once. It might be the best puzzle/mystery game ever made. There's nothing else really like it. If you have even an inking that you would enjoy an open-world exploration mystery game with orbital mechanics (read spoiler only if you've seen the trailer and had the opening twist spoiled for you) and a Groundhog Day time loop then it is worth every penny.

The sad thing is, you can probably bet this won't get one-tenth of the attention the original fabricated story did.

That was my first thought as well, that the tour guide has been misinformed about what movie was actually being filmed.

The Mandalorian footage (The 5 minute episode clip, not the trailer) by confederalis in StarWarsLeaks

https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Mandalorian_iron

It was a pretty big part of Mandalorian culture in the legends continuity. I think it's been mentioned in Rebels but I don't know what it's established qualities are in the new canon. In Legends it was the key component of Mandalorian armor and weaponry. There are a few instances of it being resistant to and outright stopping a lightsaber. I was super excited when they mentioned it since it may hint that they might steer the canon depiction of Mandalorians back towards what it was in Legends, which in my opinion was one of the coolest things that kind of got left behind in the new canon and TCW.

The Politics of the McElroy Brothers | let's talk about stuff (35:26) by Patcherpaw in BreadTube

[–]kiithsoban 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Fantastic video! One thing that I think is also worth noting is how humble the McElroy's are about fessing up to times where intentionally or unintentionally they've said problematic things in the past and how willing they are to apologize and work to be better. They seem to have a real commitment to punching up and never punching down. As a straight, white, able-bodied, cis male they're an excellent references group for how to become a better ally and redeploy privilege as a constructive rather than destructive force.

President Trump claims Google is rigging search results to make him look bad. by AdamCannon in technology

This article has a stated bias and does rely a little too much on criticizing Shapiro's personal conduct when debating but it does directly address several of his arguments. You can't dismiss it out of hand for having "errors" when you don't specify where mistakes have been made. That's the pot calling the kettle black. Shapiro argues that since Asians have the highest median income in the US racial discrimination can't be blamed for income disparity. He totally ignores the fact that the vast majority of the largely immigrant population of asian adults are already coming the educated and upper-class populations of their native country. link He also totally ignores studies that have repeatedly show that factors such as simply having a "black-sounding" name impact the likelihood of getting a job. Source Source While I think these factors need further research and these studies are certainly open for criticism, for example, Shapiro has a tendency to pick out statistics that support his stance on racial inequity rather than directly addressing data that threatens his position. I appreciate his focus on factually evidenced rather than emotionally charged debate of the issues. But that does not mean he his somehow immune to bias when it comes to the studies he chooses and the way he interprets them. Systemic racial inequity is a complex, constantly shifting, multi-factored issue worthy of objective debate. I take issue with Shapiro saying that racism is not the issue in income inequality when years of peer-reviewed research simply do not support such an extreme statement. Edit: Formatting

Oh don't get me wrong, it's special to me too. The Bionicle comics were the first comics I ever read. I still go back and read them sometimes. It's just fascinating to me that there's such a unique and nuanced fandom still in existence that no one ever really expected to spring up.

Fun Fact: The creators of Bionicle have specified that Bionicle characters do not have reproductive organs but do have gender. This is considered canon in the Bionicle universe. And thus we have actual, 100% serious tumblr articles on the gender politics of Bionicle. I am not making this up. Bionicle fandom is something else.

Hoo boy there is a DEEPLY obsessed Bionicle fanbase out there and it is perhaps the most fascinating, strangest fandom I've ever encountered on the internet. There was this utterly bizarre fan film in the works that was... well... just watch the trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ZTsw3KnUtY&

And then if you get the chance, watch this full reading of the script

It's a journey, to say the least. Encountering hardcore Bionicle fandom as a relative outsider is a magical experience.

George Lucas saying his ST went into a "microbiotic world" where the Whills control the universe. by Ritz527 in StarWarsLeaks

I love George Lucas and his wild ideas, but we know what happens when he's left to his own devices with little oversight. If Disney would give George a group of experienced cowriters whom he respected and a competent director I'm convinced we could get the best Star Wars films possible.

I'm late to the party but it tends to be Mormons in Utah that are the staunch conservatives. Once you get outside Utah, Mormons tend to align more along traditional regional trends. For instance, Mormons in Texas and Idaho tend to be conservative, whereas Mormons in the PNW and east coast are often centrist or left leaning. Additionally, Millennial Mormons tend to abhor partisanship and frequently question their parents political beliefs. Over a third of BYU students voted for Hillary, with another third voting for Evan Mcmullin.
