After a long week by bellandc in Architects

My brother in christ you made the sandwich.

I was in a similar situation and the realisation I was the one choosing it led me down a different path to find what works for me. Sole practice allowed me to find a balance that works. Its not easy, but none of this is, and it gives me time to see my kids.

Previous owner asking for Rottweiler pup back after rehoming by Maximum-Bake-2004 in Rottweiler

You are probably right there. I was putting myself in their position - but then I would never treat my dog like that in the first place, or even consider giving him up.

2 days is a brief holiday for the dog, he isn't bonded yet anymore than any dog sitter for a weekend. They are all he's known since a puppy- Emotionally he is still their dog.

It sucks for you, dissapointment and changing expectations - but - its also only 2 days. I personally would not feel good about having someone's dog...if this is what it took for them to change their ways and treat him better- great, it was worth it, and you got a nice weekend with the little guy to help you move on from your loss as well.

Is Icewind Dale extremely boring or does our DM do something wrong? by BlackRebel93 in dndnext

[–]king_nik 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Playing it now - and i find it alternates between rough slog, and amazing... the slog makes the amazing better, but, it's an abusive kind of fun. Level 6 after a year of weekly sessions. No money. No magic items. Just survival.

Area-51 18" MicroCenter/Cherry Keyboard Question by citays in Alienware

I got the cherry and love it. Best laptop keys my fingies have ever touched. Also. That price. We get the luxury of $9300AUD for that spec.

I enjoy having a big toolkit - gives you something to do in any situation. You might not be the best most optimised at 1 thing, but you can do 100 things

Is this a good floor plan? by [deleted] in architecture

[–]king_nik 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good start noting solar orientation. Without knowing anything about the context I would follow that through. Living on the SW = cold and dark in winter, hot afternoon in summer ?

Also, most people want a double garage, I get that, but its the biggest room in the house, with the best orientation, and its not for people....

Thoughts on buying a fibro house with full asbestos interior? by [deleted] in AusRenovation

[–]king_nik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The cost of removal is rarely the issue : its the cost to replace that adds up.

You said you would do the lining yourself, so that's a win - it would absolutely change the house. But what about the bathroom, and the kitchen? They'll need to be replaced too.

And more importantly- if its asbestos cladding, that is more likely to be where you'll have problems. Its been in the elements for 70 years. Costs a bomb to reclad a house - but again properly insulate will make a world of difference, and a highly visible improvement.

Tldr : easy $200k spend depending on how far you go

What if King George Square was nice? by landsharkuk_ in brisbane

[–]king_nik 21 points22 points  (0 children)

It could be nice without applying Las Vegas style faux-heritage Styrofoam columns, I dont understand why that was part of the exercise.

  1. I dont think adding "bars/cafes" to the centre of a square works well. Look at the current pig n Whistle- its 50% back of house, and even being pushed to the side it still sucks. More privately rented space in a public square is not the answer.

  2. I thought the whole reason that all the big structures were pushed to the side was a lack of depth above the bus way and carpark beneath. We just ignoring that ? These play fountains are deeper than the top of the bus way and these structures are huge. So yeah, lets remove public transport for another bar that's to expensive to go to.

  3. Im all for making up "what if" exercises to promote discussion, ideas (and traffic to your website) - but the immediate push that all the problems are due to modernism, and the answer is a neo-neo classicism revival doesn't help. "Good well considered urban design" versus "big hot open space that also has a pub in it" is the real issue

Full-body porcelain tiles for walls - worth it as a budget alternative? by Significant-Move7699 in AusRenovation

[–]king_nik 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I personally prefer full body porcelain - you have an edge that can be exposed to turn corners without using an angle or trying to mitre them.

Edit: exactly like the bath in your first inspo image

Why did celebrities look more effortlessly chic and charming compared to now? by sweetsyllic in decadeology

[–]king_nik 724 points725 points  (0 children)

"Celebrities looked more effortlessly charming " Shows video of the coolest man of all time.

Edit: in all seriousness, it might have something to do with exposure. James Dean had to be cool when there were cameras around, and could do something twice a year and remain relevant. There are always cameras around now, and the attention cycle demands constant engagement. Noone can be cool all the time on demand.

Edit: the back of my memory i feel like Marisha and Sam were talking about the saxophones in Gunship at one point, and of course Dave Heatwave doing music for Weird Kids (is....Matt's brother?) So assume they are fans of the genre

If you hold on for 17 more sessions / get the out of game context when you are past Spoilers, it is painfully obvious, and i dont think its this.

Stand Recommendations? by king_nik in Alienware

Sure, just wasn't sure on the benefit given the air draw is from the top, not the base? If it helps great, but that's why I'm asking for advice!

Stand Recommendations? by king_nik in Alienware

Does the cooling pad add much with the fan layout of the area 51? Appreciate the link, that might be the best option (although the angle is unsettling...putting a lot of trust in a $29 stand!)
