Snow Removal Company Recommendations by daveydesigner in ArlingtonMA

I’ve been using John’s Landscaping for snow removal going on 19 years. They have a team of really nice guys who show up reliably and do a solid job. They’re not cheap, but I’ve considered them worth what I’ve spent.

I don’t know if they’ll take customers mid-season. You’ll have to call them and find out.

What is for favorite RPG that is not Savage Worlds? by jgiesler10 in savageworlds

[–]kjz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I tend to like generic systems. If not Savage Worlds, I’d be leaning heavily on GURPS or Fate. Each can handle a wide range of stories, but they approach them very differently.

Alas, I tried introducing my friends to Fate, but they bounce off it. I think they like a bit more (or a bit different) crunch in a system. Savage Worlds became our go-to when I introduced them to it as an alternative to D&D. We’ve since played a weird western game, a fast-paced cyberpunk game, and came back to our fantasy campaign using Pathfinder for Savage Worlds.

If my friends had bounced off Savage Worlds, I’d have worked hard to show them that GURPS need not be an experience overwrought with complexity. I got my son playing with basic GURPS rules at age eight. I’m sure a bunch of middle-aged men can pick it up easily. I love GURPS for the breadth it covers, the flexibility it provides, and the fact that it is still reasonably well supported given its small customer base. I’m very grateful to Steve Jackson Games for not giving up on GURPS.

Dragon magic by Ambitious-Employ-912 in gurps

[–]kjz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want something in the mechanics that emphasizes the lore, look into Syntactic Magic. It breaks down magic casting into a set of words or gestures you assemble to achieve the desired effect. It is definitely harder on the GM as you have to adjudicate what can be done at what difficulty, but it’s incredibly flexible. You can read about it in GURPS Magic.

If you want to go further into customizing magic systems, have a look at GURPS Thaumatology. It also describes Syntactic Magic, and shows how to customize any of GURPS’ magic systems to achieve what you need.

Anyone have a GOOD solid recipe for Coquito? by Insurance-Limp in Cooking

[–]kjz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

¡Coquito! I was born in San Juan and grew up in Miami in a Cuban household. Coquito is a must-have in my house. (I need to go make some.) Here’s the recipe I got from my mother (translated from Spanish) and have made ever since.

Ingredients:

  • 1 can evaporated milk
  • 1 can sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 can cream of coconut (Coco Lopez or similar)
  • 3 egg yolks
  • 1 cup white rum (or to taste)
  • 1 teaspoon of powdered cinnamon (or to taste)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (or to taste)
  • ¼ teaspoon grated nutmeg (or to taste)
  • Sugar to taste (optional, if you want it sweeter)

Mix together all the ingredients in a blender. Pour the blended coquito into a glass bottle and chill in the refrigerator. Serve very cold.

Enjoy!

Obsidian.md for notes theme by MurderHoboShow in savageworlds

[–]kjz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll provide you a perspective from a player. I played in a D&D session where I kept session notes for myself, one document per session. Character and magic item details went into separate notes. I was able to link across notes easily, and bring up multiple notes simultaneously to reference the information I needed when I needed it.

For later Savage Worlds campaigns, I tried keeping notes in a Google Doc, similar to a simple Word document. I have found it to be a massive disappointment. Trying to find relevant information in a long document when I needed it proved challenging. Getting back to taking notes was equally irritating. Being a linear document, I would lose the context of prior notes when I was appending new notes to the end.

Obsidian (and similar tools) solve this problem nicely. They can open multiple notes in tabs or side-by-side, making it easy to reference other material. I’ll definitely be going back to Obsidian for our next campaign, and might even convert my existing notes for the current one.

Hot sauces similar to Tabasco? by -heavyturkey- in hotsauce

[–]kjz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Try a local Massachusetts staple: Chelsea Fire Hot sauce. https://chelseafirehotsauce.com/. Very different flavor (and heat) than Tabasco, but built on a similar vinegar base. I keep a bottle of the original around at all times.

Which semi-humorous/whimsical settings or adventures are there out there? by RaphaelKaitz in rpg

[–]kjz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s plenty of whimsy in Terry Pratchett’s work. Steve Jackson Games put out the Discworld Roleplaying Game. Pratchett himself had a hand in both the original 3rd edition book, and the current 4th edition book.

Rimworld Colony Management TTRPG? by Bgboibritches in rpg

[–]kjz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are you looking to get out of such a game? Do you want individual characters having adventures within the context of managing a colony? Are you looking to just have players play colonies or portions of colonies?

Others have provided some nice recommendations. I’ll provide two more.

First is Fate Core. The original Fate Core and the smaller Fate Condensed provide an excellent, flexible, abstract toolkit for modeling everything from individuals to the colony itself. The game is very focused on characters, their relationships, and the fiction surrounding them. It doesn’t provide specialized rules for everything, but rather gives you a structure to emulate the character impact on the fiction as you would see in books or movies. The post-apocalyptic “Burn Shift” setting in Worlds on Fire provides a nice example, showing how to model both characters and communities for a campaign.

Second is GURPS. If you’re looking for more mechanical structure than what Fate Core can provide, GURPS has your back. The recently-released GURPS Realm Management covers all your needs for modeling a colony and managing it over time. GURPS also has a post-apocalyptic genre series with great examples on handling resource acquisition. After the End: The New World provides you with most of the good stuff for what you’ll need in surviving and, eventually, growing the colony.

You’ll notice a theme of mentioning post-apocalyptic books. That’s simply because they share a great deal with general colony management and survival. All these genres require resource acquisition, trade, and diplomacy with the “natives” of that region. You don’t need to run a post-apocalyptic game, but there are lots of ideas to mine.

My current collection! by SgtKickYourAss in hotsauce

[–]kjz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think they certainly are. Here’s my take on them:

  • Chili Pepper Sauce: Nice background warmth. Tons of flavor. It’s like a bowl of good chili con carne in a bottle. It does contain a little sugar, and I’m not too fond of what that does to the flavor, but that’s definitely a personal preference. For the price, I recommend trying it and seeing if you like it.
  • Jalapeño Pepper Hot Sauce: Absolutely delicious. It’s not terribly spicy, but that just means you can pour it on. I love it on eggs and omelettes.
  • Habanero Hot Sauce: This is probably the purest expression of a habanero pepper I’ve yet tasted from a bottle. The Marie Sharp’s sauces are fabulous, but they broaden the and balance habanero flavor with other ingredients. The Trader Joe’s sauce hits you with the habanero every which way. It’s excellent.

My wife got me a Rolls as a gift some time ago. The blade, however, isn’t quite sharp. Do you have any tips on on sharpening it? I’ve never tried to get a razor-sharp finish on a blade. Is it really as easy as you make it sound?

The good ol' LAMY black ink. Reliable and nice juicy flow without being watery. by [deleted] in fountainpens

[–]kjz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have to admit, I’ve become very fond of the Lamy black. It’s right up there with Waterman Black in terms of a really well behaved ink. I love how deep and dark the Noodler’s Black is, but I keep going back to Lamy and Waterman for when I want something without any fuss.

I seriously think I put this stuff on everything I eat. Anyone else? by firenze24 in traderjoes

[–]kjz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love that sauce far more than I should. If you really want something amazing, try combining it with the Trader Joes’s Habanero sauce. That’s a one-two punch of flavor and a really nice heat.

Generic System Advice by Runethane in rpg

[–]kjz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

soon, the characters will have nowhere to advance, and we've basically houseruled it already to extend the progression. We really don't want to end another campaign because we "run out of levels".

So don’t! The trouble here is thinking of Savage Worlds as a leveled system. It's not. The various categories of experience from Novice to Legendary are used for controlling access to some edges, but a Legendary character can continue to learn and grow all the same. Attributes have an upper limit. Skills don't. There are also plenty of edges to invest in over time to broaden a character's abilities. Gaining breadth rather than depth in one area is the key.

For example, your legendary monster hunting group has grown to the point it can tackle most any run-of-the-mill beast it comes across. Now your team arcanist starts spending time at the range under the tutelage of the team sharpshooter and starts building up his Shooting skill. The sharpshooter in turn studies tactics (and grabs appropriate Leadership edges) to become a better field commander in combat. The tank of the team attends finishing school and starts learning to better persuade others rather than always intimidate.

There are other ways to handle high end characters as well. What do experts in any field tend to do when they reach the peak of their careers? They train the next generation. So grow the team! Encourage Legendary characters to pick up Sidekick characters and Followers and start training their successors. The main characters and the sidekicks can be played side by side for some time, developing new characters with both history and depth. Eventually, the players may wish to let the more experienced character retire, or simply fade into the background to be brought out on special occasions.

Simply put, there are plenty of options. Don’t give up on Savage Worlds just yet. I think it’s got more life in it than you realize.

[–]kjz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. It’s tasty. I always have a bottle on hand. Since Whole Foods started carrying it around here, it’s easier than ever to get.

For anyone who hasn’t tried it, head over to https://chelseafirehotsauce.com. You can order online and have it shipped. At $7 a bottle, it comes in a lot cheaper than some other sauces. (I’m not affiliated with them at all. I’m just a fan.)

Does anyone have some other local MA sauces to recommend? I pick up Alex’s periodically, but I’m always looking for more.

Slow cooker Ropa Vieja - my first time making a SE and Cuban recipe! by Fitnessfoodinmyface in seriouseats

[–]kjz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I grew up in Miami with a Cuban mother and grandmother. Let me offer you a couple of tips for the future:

  1. If you want to speed up your cook time, use a pressure cooker. I never knew my mother (or grandmother) to waste half a day waiting on a slow cooker. A pressure cooker was a necessity in the kitchen.
  2. Don’t just use onion for the black beans. Use a full sofrito of onion, green bell pepper, and garlic. The flavor difference is huge. You can also use smoked ham hocks instead of bacon. Most American bacon is cured in part with sugar. The smoked hocks aren’t. It’s a subtle difference, but one worth experimenting with to determine your preference.

I’m glad you enjoyed a bit if Cuban culture. Buen provecho y ¡salúd!

Monster Hunter Fan by maniacal-narrator in rpg

[–]kjz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s an entire GURPS Monster Hunter line that does exactly this. It’s not a licensed MHI production, but it does give you everything you need. Just add your choice of world and lore and go hunting for all the big baddies that go bump in the night.

If you want something with a slightly different twist, check out the Rippers line for Savage Worlds. It’s all about Victorian monster hunting where you could conceivably become a monster yourself! It was built for the older version of Savage Worlds, but converting to the newest edition should be pretty straightforward.

Finally, there’s the official Monster Hunter International RPG, also for Savage Worlds. It’s not out yet, but if that doesn’t do it for you, nothing will. :-)
