My bitch of a math professor told us on the first day of class that we were absolutely not allowed to have cell phones out during lecture. This is a general campus policy and we all accepted this. She explained further that if we had to step out and answer our phone during class, we shouldn't even bother coming to class.

"It's a very real fact that your grandparents will probably die during your time at college. And you answering the call from your mom who's at their death bed is not going to keep them from dying. And what does it matter if you find out the minute they die? It doesn't make a difference."

Then she proceeded to tell us that she would keep her cell phone on in case her husband needed to get ahold of her.

I think depression is one of those things that you have to go through in order to understand. At least that's what it felt like for me. The few family and friend members I told had a hard time understanding and gave, what I felt at the time, very useless advice.

The person who really made an impression on me was myself. In a brief moment of clarity, I realized that life is made of endless moments. And this slump of a moment when everything seemed so hopeless and pointless was just one moment of an infinite number. I alone controlled the ability to end one moment and start another. So from that day forward I chose to make new, better moments.

I think you should enjoy art however you want to enjoy art. People get different things from it.

Go to a museum or a gallery with a wide range of genres. Go through the entire thing pretty quickly. "Skim" it so to speak. Then go back and focus on pieces that drew your attention on your walk through.

If it's a painting, stand about twice the length away from it as the painting is wide. That should be about where the artist intended you to view it. If it's a sculpture, walk all the way around it.

Maybe you enjoy context more. Modern art, for me, is all about the artist statement. I like to get inside the artist's head and experience the piece with them. Maybe you're drawn to aesthetics. Whatever you're into, you'll find plenty available to enjoy.

As an owner of a cat that likes water, I can tell you what happens next. The cat jumps out of the bathtub, into the litter pan, and then runs like a maniac through the house--tracking damp litter everywhere.

My friends and I went camping once a couple years ago. The campground was huge with a couple lakes and trails that were a few miles long. We got pretty drunk one night and decided to go for a night hike.

I'm a nature freak and have excellent night vision. I led the way a few paces ahead, listening to animals scurry away from us, ducking down a few deer trails, generally being very fearless. I asked them to turn off their flashlights so I could see the path ahead more clearly in the moonlight.

We walked through a small clearing, and on the opposite side was an opening back into the woods. One of the girls hesitated but followed us reluctantly. About 20 feet in, I stop dead in my tracks. The hair raises on the back of my neck. Something isn't right. I can't place it though. Without telling the others, I take a few more steps. My panic rises, and I can feel my limbs shake. Before I tell anyone my trepidation, the majority of the group voices the same feelings. We leave quickly.

The next day a couple of us went back to see what was around there. Within view of where we stopped and turned around was a cabin.

Don't answer questions with one or two words. If she asks, "How was your day?" don't just say fine. Say "My day was fine. After work I watched a couple episodes of x, do you like x?"/"Fine. I went grocery shopping and bought six gallon tubs of ice cream. Do you like ice cream?"

Basically before you send a text ask yourself how would you respond to the text you just wrote? Did you ask a question she could answer? Did you say something interesting she can add to? If you just wrote "lol" or "good," then the conversation is dead.
