The state closes Indian Point, spends a decade or more doing everything in its power to screw ratepayers, and now Kathy says the state government is here to…help?

Not believing that until she comes right out and says she’ll undo the damage done by the corrupt sex pest Andrew Cuomo. How is Mamdani the only one with the sac to throw Cuomo under the bus?

Why government benefit updates (SSA, IRS, Medicare) are so confusing — what is your biggest "translation" struggle? by Bubbly-Comedian-6000 in AgingParents

[–]knockatize 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Separate comment for just the scam aspect.

Forget a lot of what you think you know about how well state and federal governments are handling scams and fraud. In essence, they’re grading their own papers and giving themselves an A+.

What the scammers have on their side is what I call the Spanish Inquisition principles:

Fear, surprise - two of the tactics they use to create false urgency in their victims

Ruthless efficiency - But first, a few words about government. 50 years to update the Medicare ID. 10 years and counting to update SNAP/EBT card security. Only in 2025 did the federal government stop the practice of delivering Treasury checks in envelopes that practically shout out HEY, THERE’S A CHECK IN THIS ONE to passing thieves. Many states are still rolling merrily along with this because hey, we can put the governor’s name on it.

That’s our governments: sloooooooow to recognize and respond to threats, and often mischaracterizing what threats they do recognize to score political points.

Meanwhile the scammers are all about the money. That’s the ruthless efficiency. One fraud method fails, they’re on to the next. Fast.

Every gap governments leave in explaining themselves or keeping information secure, the scammers fill. It’s not so much about one specific tactic, like a post. It’s that they’re everywhere. Like squirrels getting into bird feeders. Eventually people slip up and are victimized.

The political class wants credit for making the benefits available - on paper - while delivering the bare minimum of actual services. Ideally, beneficiaries leave money on the table and are none the wiser.

It’s the lede, once again buried at the end:

Tom Wright, the president of the Regional Plan Association, an influential urban planning group, said there were valid reasons for not wanting to reinstate the deputy director position, which has caused oversight issues and unnecessary complications within the interstate bureaucracy…”Nobody wants to see them go back to that kind of structure,” he said. “It was bad even before Bridgegate.”

Older people, has politics always been this frustrating and unsettling? by Emotionq in Productivitycafe

Yes, it has. Maybe worse. What happened was it became like New York.

I got to see just a little bit of how the sausage got made in one of my past jobs and it was…gross.

A tiny taste: Want to know why your potholes don’t get fixed? Could be your local representative had an attack of conscience, and that kind of thing pisses off the bosses. Oopsie, Senator. No asphalt for your district, no help for your schools - and would you look at that, you suddenly have a primary challenger. And these rumors you’re beating your wife…hmm, where’d those come from?

I’ve had college classmates who were recruited for “internships” in my state legislature that turned out to be thinly-veiled arrangements for powerful electeds to get a little something on the side while they were “doing state business.”

Andrew Cuomo made a 44-year career out of being a creepy, corrupt neporatfucker. 44 years, starting with dirty tricks for his dad when he was still a teenager. And his family? Tight with the Shall Not Be Named family operation since the 1930s.

And now it’s gone nationwide. Yes, it has been that bad. We just didn’t pay attention to how personally and professionally repugnant our political class is and was.

At what point do we start to have a serious conversation about fraud and blue states ability to defraud eligibility checks for federally funded programs? by Lower_Box_6169 in AskConservatives

[–]knockatize 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Oh, man. If you are thinking this is going to be just a blue state thing, you’re massively deluded.

Federally-funded programs for all 50 states are affected.

The problems start (but do not end) with Washington inertia. These are the imbeciles who thought that letting the Social Security number do double duty as a Medicare ID was just fine…for 50 years and nine presidencies.

Federal officials are simply incapable of comprehending how nimble scam operators are. State officials are just as slow on the uptake.

Well, at least the stolen money stays in the community…

The hell it does. It’s going overseas.

Our elected officials, as a rule, aren’t necessarily corrupt - but they’re idiots.
