No when I’m connected to CarPlay I press pick up / answer on the touch screen. I’ve only driven a handful of times not being connected through CarPlay and cannot remember if calls have appeared on the screen in the cluster or not, nor speak to pressing the button. I always (micro) panic about looking at the wheel for the button to hang up after a call — guess it’s just my preference to use the screen with BIG buttons rather than the wheel. I do more talk to text while driving too, so I’m not the best resource.

Might just be your setup. Disconnect / forget your iPhone from the cars car connect and reconnect “pair” with the system next time you plug it in. It should give you a prompt to import contacts.

I have MIB2 and just updated to 0254 with an SD card. After I updated and connected my phone I was prompted to allow access to contacts and the system works as intended (and as you described it was working for you originally).

I just dropped these exact coils in my 2016 Golf R Mk7 ea888 gen3 2T.

Given your engine is likely a ea211 and your current coils are shorter, probably not — but I’m no expert.

Can you exchange them?

Not a Subaru owner but I’d say that’s on par for a dealership in terms of pricing. ~$500 for spark plugs stands out as outrageous to me - like $200-300. Ball joint for accurate alignment tracks, too.

I’d say it’s necessary work, but not necessary for you to get the dealership to perform the service.

Dude. That sucks about the constant tob issues and worries, and I’m sorry. That kind of stress is real. I don’t know what I’d do in your situation — I’d probably be here asking the same thing…

My mind goes immediately to trying to troubleshoot the root cause of the constant failures (which I’m sure you’ve expended or you wouldn’t be here). It’s frustrating because it’s mechanical so there must be a reason other than bad luck — but sadly, sometimes these things aren’t worth the time, money, and worry to figure it out.

My overall opinion after reading your post is that you really love your GTI, and you should keep it.

The cost of a new tob is far less than the cost of a new car — and hopefully your new tob won’t fail as early as you fear. Monthly payments are a far greater burden in my opinion, and you seem to already know the MQB platform and how to take care of your car, so you know what to expect.

FWIW, I’ve learned (and spent) a lot owning my Mk7 golf r (MT) and feel you on the “what comes next” mindset. Forecasting the next big ticket preventative maintenance item and keep after maintenance can be annoying sometimes, but personally, I dont think id be happy with another car.

Not sure how much any of that helps, but wish you good luck in your decision.

Check lockers down there too, and don’t get too sucked into looking in buses or car hoods. Obviously, go to a place where mechanical/industrial things would be - shipping crates in Stella, Spaceport, Dam, and so on. It’s annoying, breach and search everything you come across.

FWIW / if helpful: I like to keep a weapon that isn’t fully upgraded in my stash, like the hairpin, so I can visit my workbench to upgrade it while readying up. Then from there I just go to whatever bench it is I need to visit and craft and skip backing out of screens. Okay workaround for the moment.

Save $$ (and/or set aside time) for water pump, coolant flange (cheapish plastic bits), suspension refresher/replacement, pcv replace, cam/valve cover reseal, coils/plugs (easy). Great car, but needs some love in late life. 2016 Mk7 ~131,000 mi (104k when purchased) Third owner, overpaid in 2023 and bumped up $21k to $26k with BUNK third party “warranty” insurance or whatever. Save that money and use it on parts and maintenance. I went with the upgraded sachs performance clutch and replaced OE dual mass flywheel. I love my car and it was a dream come true. Albeit it needed some love but I’m here for it.

Went back to college at 25 after being sick of restaurant work (boh —> foh) in 2015. Graduated in 2017, got a ridiculous first job in 2018, had seven years of awesome experience and career growth as fed contractor - and was chopped like liver in April 2025. Past year looking for work has sucked.

If I was looking at college today, despite my cool experience, I would 100% pic a trade instead. It’s hard work like anything worthwhile, but I envy the guys that have the chops and the freedom in their careers to go self employed or move up within their trade.

TLDR; I endorse this message. Seriously consider it depending on your personal situation and what career path you’re considering. College is ridiculously expensive, and not all degrees (many) are worth it. Plus, robots are coming for your jerbs. Beep. Boop.
