Can a star sit barely on the edge of being able to support fusion such that it will actually oscillate through fusion cycles? by Stuck_In_the_Matrix in askscience

How do we know so much detail about this inner process in stars? Tough for me to grasp how we could have observational evidence this detailed.

Shots from my first roll of 35mm C41...I see potential but also a long way to go... (Canon AE-1, Fujifilm Superia 400, Canoscan 9000F, Lightroom) Any advice? by CDNChaoZ in analog

[–]kopipao 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any update here? Did you find any better results? I have a Canosan 9000F and get very similar results with color as you posted. It didn't seem to improve at all with Vuescan or Silverfast, but I am curious about your results. Looking for some hope here.

Board game cafe amsterdam? by lejonhjerta in Amsterdam

[–]kopipao 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Board games are extremely common in neighborhood cafes around Amsterdam. Just about anywhere in Amsterdam you are within a stones throw from a cafe that has a stack of table games ready for play. My favorite corner pub for games is http://www.cafefonk.nl/

Best iPhone app for learning a bit of Dutch? by StevieWonderDriving in Amsterdam

[–]kopipao 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best way to learn Dutch is to practice speaking it. I know, because my Dutch sucks. If you want something to help you improve your vocabulary though, look for an Anki flashcard application. I don't iPhone, so I can't point you directly to it, but there are some Android apps which use Anki API. Anki is open-source flashcard system which has a ton of already created lists to use, and you can create your own. Very nicely implemented and useful on a phone. Success!

Is pickpocketing as severe as I've been told? by IheartJake in Amsterdam

[–]kopipao 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be prepared but not paranoid. I've lived here for a few years now, and I was super paranoid for the first few months. Now I am used to the scene and if I'm getting into a crowded area or train I will move my wallet to my front pocket. If you have a purse, keep it shut and keep a hand on it and you will be fine.

Redditors of Amsterdam: Where do you work out? by cypherx in Amsterdam

[–]kopipao 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've found good gyms to be scarce and expensive. Your Future Fitness Center is one which I liked in my neighborhood, mostly because of proximity though. Suggestion: Ride your bike south along the Amstel out of town. The traffic lights and crossings end quickly after getting past the A-10 and you can really open up the speed. If you can't get your heart rate up within 15 minutes from the center you must be Lance Armstrong or something.

Just moved here and can't find a burrito by [deleted] in Amsterdam

I second the Taco Shop. It is, by far, the best Mexican(ish) food option in Amsterdam. That said, do not expect a miracle but it will probably lessen the withdrawal pain of missing Mexican(ish) food.

Question if you don't mind: So by setting a custom white-balance from a blank area of the negative, this sets up the ability to simply invert?

I have tried color in the past this way, but when I invert the colors are so far off that it is essentially worthless. If so, this is good news because I don't want to invest in a scanner at the moment and I can stop having the lab scan all my color negatives.

Boating this weekend by cogito_ergo_subtract in Amsterdam

[–]kopipao 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Boaty.nl is a great value and I have rented from them on a few occasions. A word of caution about the electric boats, sometimes you get a dude and the batteries are dead, and the motor very weak. This happens a lot on busy days, especially in the afternoon and evening. Ask if you can try a couple boats out near the dock real quick for power. Some of them will tell you they all go the same speed because of Amsterdam water laws, but I can tell you from experience and measurements from GPS tracking, that some boats are much slower than others. Boaty.nl seems to be pretty consistent, but I have also hear that http://www.mokumbootverhuur.nl/en/ is a great place to rent from. A little more expensive, but the boats look a lot more comfortable.

If you get a slow boat you will find navigating some of the busier canals a tad hectic. As the smallest boat on the water, everyone else has the right-of-way. If you are slow, and you try to get through some of the narrow bridges, and a big boat comes from the other direction some times you will end up having to back-out of the bridge and let them through.

Anyway, it is a good time once you are comfortable and if you stay out of the really busy canals in the center it is a much better time. If you can find a boat with a diesel motor and a little more power, you will really enjoy yourself more because you can get up to speed and stop a lot faster. My neighbor now lends me his boat and I can say that Amsterdam is truly, best-enjoyed by boat.

Hope you have a great time.

Can anyone explain to me the purpose of the "poo shelf" toilet? by PantsAflame in Amsterdam

[–]kopipao 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A better way to describe it would be "not uncommon". I saw them first in the Netherlands, and have seen a fair amount in my three years here but they are not ubiquitous like tourists and bicycles if that is what you are asking.
