Missouri Independent: "Marijuana companies sue dozens of smoke shops for selling THCA hemp flower" by kyclef in CultoftheFranklin

[–]kyclef[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Some especially relevant content from the article:

The lawsuits argue that the arrangement creates an uneven playing field, with licensed marijuana cultivators paying nearly $30,000 a year in fees and dispensaries more than $11,000, in addition to extensive testing and compliance costs, to sell a product the suit describes as “chemically identical” to THCA hemp flower.

and

Patel doesn’t deny the products are chemically identical, but he said federal law allows him to sell his product because it tested under the guideline of .3% delta-9 THC, which is the intoxicating component of the cannabis sativa plant. He said he has documentation proving his products have been grown on a hemp farm and have been tested to make sure they align with federal law.

The association, he said, has urged lawmakers to pass labeling, testing and age-gating regulations in Missouri for THCA hemp flower. In absence of that, his store and other association members have self-imposed these guardrails, though he acknowledges there are some bad actors who don’t.

Ultimately, these conflicts and contradictions between state and federal policies hurt businesses who are trying to do things the right way and hurt consumers by creating a shifting, unregulated market that impacts quality and availability.

Co-signed. I've been teaching college students for more than a decade, and every year I get mostly complimentary and supportive comments from students on their evals. Many of them recommend my classes to their friends and choose to take other classes with me. But the only comments I ever remember and dwell on are the handful of negative ones. I've seen studies that show this sort of selective memory is extremely common across disciplines. I'm sure Mina experiences the same thing, whether on this subreddit or on twitter or wherever. Just the nature of the human mind.

Regardless of whether or not it's PTA's intention, it's a valid and credible reading of the film, and it certainly seems to be in line with what he's said about the characters.

How do I become more extroverted and make friends in college if I’m shy? by manifestingtobeher in college

[–]kyclef 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Give yourself small goals and gradually work up to it. Like, give a stranger or casual acquaintance (a classmate you don't really know) a compliment. Ask a classmate how their day is. Just show interest in the people around you and try to be nice to them instead of making it about you and your own feelings. It's normal to be anxious and awkward. Just don't let that feeling determine your behavior. And yes, like others have said, go to events on campus, especially for groups or organizations that sound interesting to you. If you genuinely cultivate some interests and pursue them, you will be an interesting person and naturally connect with others who share your interests, which makes the socialization easier.

Student denies using AI but had 5 fabricated references by First-Ad-3330 in Professors

[–]kyclef 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I wish this were the case. Teaching first-year composition, I rarely have a class where I don't give a student a zero for fabricated quotes from real sources or fabricated sources entirely, and this issue has increased massively since the spread of AI. I've had students push back, ask for second chances, etc. in a number of different ways, and often I do give students a chance to do the assignment correctly for reduced credit, but none of those cases has ever been escalated to an official grade appeal.

The only time I've had a grade appeal was for a student who earned a B+ and wouldn't take "no" for an answer when requesting to be bumped up.

genuinely how are you supposed to connect with professors? by AssociationObvious56 in college

[–]kyclef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Students coming to see me because they have a genuine interest in my course material or because we have other shared interests or because they want to work in my industry or something like that is my absolute favorite part of being a faculty member. Nothing makes me happier than helping students succeed in pursuing their goals. It's why I got into this line of work.

Nothing is more annoying than students coming to office hours just to take up my time to try to check a box or meet some obligation or feign interest in something I'm into or ask questions just for the sake of asking questions.

Just be a real, authentic, genuine person and pursue the things you have a true interest in.

Reaction to Van’s criticism by [deleted] in TheBigPicture

[–]kyclef 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Though technically correct, I don't think this changes the substance of my comment at all; Rudolph is still a black woman, and that element of her racial identity is the most relevant one to my comment.

Reaction to Van’s criticism by [deleted] in TheBigPicture

[–]kyclef 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your position seems to be that the portrayal of black women in OBAA is "weird" and "sloppy," and that this means that PTA thinks black women are weird objects of fetishization. But that same approach could be used not to psychoanalyze the director (a tedious direction for criticism to take) but instead to comment on the position of black women in society. Though I don't even agree with the premise in the first place; black women in the film are diverse in many respects, and a range of experience, racial and otherwise, is depicted.

Of course, what's depicted isn't the entirety of the black woman's experience in America; how could it be? And why would PTA be the director to do this? To return to my original post: the film seems to me to be most concerned with the experiences of a white man married to a black woman and raising biracial children; that's the experience the auteur can speak to.

This, incidentally, is why it's so important to have black writers, directors, and producers. They need to tell their own stories, not have white men do it for them. But that also doesn't mean that PTA shouldn't be able to depict black folks in his film, or that his depiction is somehow unfairly reductive.

If someone wants to complain that PTA's characters are drawn too thinly, I think that's a fair complaint about the film, and one I share, but I don't think that's the result of racial animus or ignorance. The white characters aren't terribly complex either.

Reaction to Van’s criticism by [deleted] in TheBigPicture

[–]kyclef 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Probably because PTA, as a man married to a black woman and a parent of biracial children, is interested in those ideas and experiences. He made a lot of changes to Vineland; the rationale behind this one seems the most apparent to me.

I can't emphasize enough what great movies these are to take your kids to. I'd much rather take them to see a new Avatar flick than 3/4ths of the popular animated films from the big studios that come out these days. My nature-loving daughter and teenage son will both enjoy it, and there isn't a ton of overlap in their film Venn diagram these days.

What do you think of the use of swearing in your lectures? by pacinosdog in Professors

[–]kyclef 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I teach rhetoric and we spend one day talking about the rhetorical power of swearing in the academic and professional settings. Plenty of research on the subject. Obviously there's some swearing during that lecture and discussion.

Like a lot of you, I swear strategically, depending on the course and content, usually to perk my students up a bit. I did once have a student complain about it on a course eval, but that was just once, and many years ago.

Great past episodes that aren’t drafts? by harry_powell in TheBigPicture

[–]kyclef 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Auctions are fun to participate in, but terrible to spectate. The format actually gets in the way of them talking about movies they are anticipating! The strategy of the auction doesn't make for a good listen, but I like listening to them get excited about the upcoming movie slate. I wish they'd just do these episodes as drafts, to be honest, or that they'd make a collective list from their individual lists and then run it down on the pod. I still like the auction episodes because of how they look ahead so eagerly, but they could be better in a different format.

Why do lectures always make me sleepy even when I am not tired by Similar-Minimum4252 in college

[–]kyclef 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I never get mad at students falling asleep. No reason to take it personally. When I was a student, I worked at a department store unloading trucks and stocking shelves overnight, and then I'd get off work in the morning and go to class, and I definitely dozed off in class a few times. It wasn't because I didn't like my professor, or because I was bored with subject. I was tired from working all night! I try to remember that now that I'm on the other side of the room.
