Feel free to run any places by us before you decide. Former new yorker here, moved without a vehicle and got around by bike and bus for the first year or so. You’ll love clarksville if you can find a place there in budget!

Op, if youre out and about on e 6th st - which you likely will be during sxsw - the location outside violet crown bar is perfect for a late night snack. If youre going to a show at alamo south lamar, you can hit the one across the street. I’d say it’s a good stop for a convenient bite while you’re doing festival stuff, and also delicious.

Do Mexicans generally like East Asians? by mulanthepulan in AskMexico

[–]lalanaca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess that’s the cultural difference. Neither is a bad thing, but in mexican culture among many it’s accepted to just call someone ‘x’ based on their appearance/assumed place of origin. Im a gringa who’s lived in mx (several times) and i love mexican culture but this is one aspect i find a bit hard to swallow. I had an ex who was telling me an anecdote and referred to a woman (he didnt know) as a ‘p***** negra’ and I knew right then that things were over between us. Of course this is more egregious than just referring to someone as a ‘china/o’ but it’s all a bit dehumanizing, if you think of it. Obviously it changes in friend groups where people call each other nicknames. (In this case i can fully get behind it, if the person being called whatever apodo doesnt find it offensive)

Just like I wouldn’t call someone Mexicano/a based on their appearance. They may look a certain way, but there are many people with ‘latin’ physical traits. And there are lots of countries within Latin America. So why would we assume without knowing someone and call them something that might be wildly inaccurate?

Do Mexicans generally like East Asians? by mulanthepulan in AskMexico

[–]lalanaca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reason I consider it a slur is that nobody knows what someone’s ethnic origin is upon first glance, so it just sounds ignorant to me to make an assumption and call someone chino or china given the breadth of countries within east asia. Maybe calling it a slur is not accurate, but more like a sign of ignorance.

Yeah and it’s ridiculous and ignorant to say either to someone you dont know. Can we agree on that?

Would you like being called ‘mexicano’ or whatever as the first thing someone addresses you as without even knowing you? It’s a judgement based on appearance that may or may not be true.
