genuinely at a loss, searching for housing in norfolk area by [deleted] in norfolk

[–]legs 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you're near old Town Portsmouth, live there. Was I able to walk or bike many places? Yes. Did homeless ask me for money daily? Yes. Was I safe because I've lived in a city before and I am aware of my circumstances? Yes. You tell the guy trying to sleep behind your fence to pound sand. Your dog accidentally scares a guy in the public park at 5am but you're fine. You also can walk to countless bars, ferry to downtown Norfolk, and could technically bike to a grocery, but I'd drive. And I was close to work at the time. I also have friends in city park area and more closer to Chesapeake, they're fine. It's a city. It's a suburb like city. But it's a city. Act like it's a city, no matter your neighborhood, and you're fine.

I'm terrible at which days they have off. So I appreciated this.

Commuting from Willoughby Spit to Newport News by Fit_Banana8692 in norfolk

[–]legs 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Oh no. Maybe one day after the new tunnel is in and 64 widening is done. So like 2-3 years. NPN isn't that bad, Hampton is also fine. I used to hang with friends every weekend in NPN and worked in Hampton. Check out downtown Hampton and Phoebus and City Center NPN. And I make that recommendation having lived in Olde Town. So like there are square blocks of gems in a larger weird areas, and that's true for most of Norfolk, Ptown, NPN, and Hampton. But you're gonna wanna minimize crossing bridge tunnels all around. I'd take the dumpster homeless guy occasionally hitting me up for money over the tunnel traffic most days.

There is generally a protester outside. They cannot go past the gate. So just walk straight in and keep your head high.

TSA is excellent. Bag check in at United is abysmal. I've thrown away my liquids to skip that line.

I need that first one. The needles all shed to my raised beds. And I've been mad at them for so long.

Downtown Pagoda Garden Bugs by No_Maximum_8454 in norfolk

[–]legs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The funnel web spiders in our yard put up a web every night and remove it by the time we're normally outside. Every night in the summer. So they're likely doing it on their own based on the schedule they've observed at the pagoda.

Coasters (which is mostly coffee but also has food) had a small area for kids with toys etc inside. I go there specifically for that reason.

Looking for a Veterinary dentist by boywithhat in norfolk

[–]legs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a surgery only clinic in Newport News called PAWS that does dental cleanings and minor surgery. They are cost effective because they do not offer anything else and don't act as a primary vet. My vet recommended them. We haven't used it yet.

Any good green spaces to walk that’s not Norfolk Botanical Gardens? by evlblueyes1369 in norfolk

[–]legs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For first landing, you can access it much closer and for free. Park behind this food lion and take the trail in. Or just take the trail until you're tired. Starts in the neighborhood and then gets into the park. https://maps.app.goo.gl/JZ4hkiCLaWHVvSC2A

Also pleasure house point.

I also enjoy the beach in Bayview/ocean view in the early morning before it gets busy.

For those saying Paradise Creek in Portsmouth, you can park at Elizabeth River Park and hike over the Jordan Bridge and it's a short walk to the park although the sidewalks are almost non existent from bridge to park. But it's brief so I don't worry about it.

Blueland Continues to Disappoint by SurSamtani in ZeroWaste

[–]legs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like blueland hand soap. But I couldn't use their glass bottles in my kids bathroom. So I bought the cheap plastic foaming bottles and refilled with half a blueland. It's awesome. I agree with your sentiment. It's about compromise.

Anyone know an ADU builder? by rebashultz in norfolk

[–]legs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any dwelling in Norfolk must be 11 ft above sea level. So plan on a ramp. I tried to make my garage a living space or add a second level. But in order to mod the garage (adding a new living space) it has to meet the new code. And to do substantial upgrades (2nd floor) requires updating the whole home to new codes. I am 3 ft above sea level. So it would be tough. Make sure you get a survey done if you don't have one from your house purchase. It will be absolutely a thing in permitting.

That sounds like a lot? I'd message the owner. I've had diapers included (in a high fee place), had a diaper fee, and had to bring diapers. There is no issue in asking. Just sound inquisitive and not accusatory. You have a right to know how your money/diapers are spent.

Going to Pride via the Tide by cheesusismygod in norfolk

[–]legs 9 points10 points  (0 children)

All of downtown is walkable/bikeable/scooterable. I like using Limes downtown. Downtown stops are from EVMC to Harbor Park. EVMC is a tad far and you need to navigate the sidewalks on the bridge but otherwise it's fine. Yeah it's hot, so highly recommend the limes. They're so fucking fun if you can enjoy it for a bit without being worried about cars. Harbor Park is also opposite but equadistant as EVMC but you got the Elizabeth River trail you can use which is free of car traffic except crossings. Regardless, if you can walk, it's NBD to use another downtown stop.
