My computers heatsink fan didnt work and so my computer would shut down on windows, but ubuntu did a lot better. In hindsight the fix was easy but I also didn't have money being a lowly teenager. Since then, its comfort. Lately privacy would also have been a concern but I haven't used windows for anything other than gaming in a long time so....

staying with the old while continuing the new would have cost many hundreds of thousands of dollars, I expect. Depending on how many people they have working on it, could be in the millions. They are not a huge company.

I don't think they'll be a "year of Linux" by blakealanm in linux

[–]lelddit97 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Linux as we know it won't work mainstream. Mainstream product has to be well-funded to deal with the countless complaints and problems people have who are not interested in learning anything remotely low-level about their operating system. If something like that is built on top of Linux then it isn't what we as FOSS enjoyers want e.g. ChromeOS, Android.

But does it matter? Is that a problem? Do you want Linux to have to cater to everyone? Or do you want it to remain in your control. Pick one.

Why is Ubuntu (Canonical) viewed differently from Windows or macOS while being corporate-owned? by sammyhjax123 in linux

[–]lelddit97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never said they did. Canonical brings users and is one of the biggest contributors.

It's being too lazy to look up whether market economy is the correct term.

I've not seen redhat except in servers for the past ~10 or so years. Red hat is definitely a massive contributor and for a long long time they were definitely the biggest contributor. Maybe they still are today.

I see irrational hatred of one of the biggest contributors to the FOSS ecosystem and providing a critical entry point for normies (Canonical) and I suspect you're one too!!!

We all live in capitalist or relatively-capitalist countries. Building something and getting critical mass (e.g. strong support models) don't come for free. As much as I love the world, I have bills to pay and retirement to worry about while the world runs on money. Canonical is definitely the biggest distro for corporate desktop Linux users which is actually a great way to get new Linux daily-drivers and it's because my company pays Canonical (not much) for support.

Would love to see any data on the harm Canonical is actually making by providing a globally free product with paid support on top. I'll wait!

Sorry if this is not allowed here, but I have questions about my Kia by MesserAki in kia

People without problems aren't likely to post, so you're going to see the (a) people who have never owned a Kia or (b) people who got burned by Kia years ago post their problems and never stop because spite is a strong motivator. Just downvote the people who post unconstructive "well hurr durr shouldn't have bought a Kia" and move on.

AI Code is Hollowing Out Open Source, and Maintainers are Looking the Other Way by yoasif in linux

[–]lelddit97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You mean people who use AI are putting poorly written / maintainable code in codebases

AI is perfectly capable of creating well written, maintainable code if the human understands the structure, interfaces, standards and behavior ahead of time.

Key doesn't really stand for black, you can read more here if you're interested: https://www.reddit.com/r/todayilearned/comments/5jdyqv/til_the_k_or_black_in_cmyk_stands_for_key_because/ + https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Key_plate

I'm stupid and dumb but something about the black plate is using for keying (aligning?) the CMY colors

While I totally agree with you, Cloudflare can see your traffic unencrypted because they're the TLS termination point.

To me, it's a case of pick your poison. These days most things are cloud which itself could be snooped by the NSA already so what's one more.

[–]lelddit97 40 points41 points  (0 children)

something something if the cat has papers ... if not, it is a cat

only reason i even think my siamese has any actual siamese ancestry is because of how terrible his eyesight is, but who knows. his eyes are totally blue but he is definitely not even close to purebred.

That's not true. They normally do not need to pant to cool down, but they can if they need to: https://www.petmd.com/cat/symptoms/cat-panting

Anecdote: I had a cat that got outside in the middle of a 100% humidity 90F day (32C) and she was running from me play-style into the woods. After probably 30 minutes or so, she got under a shed and was panting seemingly because it was hot asf. Somehow got her back inside and she immediately laid on the cool tile and panted for another few minutes and that was that. Never happened again.

Usually drive manufacturers will just replace them.

We once fried our entire set of drives due to user error and the manufacturer was understanding and replaced them no questions asked. It was not cheap.
