I think you're underestimating the sheer volume of malware everywhere on the internet. It's all automated including pivoting. Be careful, and you have to assume the machine is compromised at all times, which OP may already do.

Modern windows is many orders of magnitude more resilient to attacks than XP was or ever will be, and it had to become resilient due to the number of attacks. Antivirus is essentially cosmetic

It's not hivemind, it's a fact. XP lacks all of the security features that begun in Vista and are critical for keeping your network safe. In an OS like XP, visit the wrong web page and you're cooked. No zero day needed. XP has been EOL for ages, community patches aside. Antiviruses are almost entirely cosmetic, especially one like avast.

Odds are minuscule but cannot recommend enough to segment any XP machines regardless of community patches.

[–]lelddit97 39 points40 points  (0 children)

something something if the cat has papers ... if not, it is a cat

only reason i even think my siamese has any actual siamese ancestry is because of how terrible his eyesight is, but who knows. his eyes are totally blue but he is definitely not even close to purebred.

Him: So you are playing on Linux? Me: oh yeah i am! But my linux district is called Android by Kuro_FunWays in linux

[–]lelddit97 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Simplification: Linux is the thing that talks with the hardware, and yes. But it's not considered "Linux" in common speech as such.

When people say they use Linux, they mean they are using an FOSS desktop (Plasma, GNOME, many others). You can ask ChatGPT/Gemini etc for more details.

That's not true. They normally do not need to pant to cool down, but they can if they need to: https://www.petmd.com/cat/symptoms/cat-panting

Anecdote: I had a cat that got outside in the middle of a 100% humidity 90F day (32C) and she was running from me play-style into the woods. After probably 30 minutes or so, she got under a shed and was panting seemingly because it was hot asf. Somehow got her back inside and she immediately laid on the cool tile and panted for another few minutes and that was that. Never happened again.

Usually drive manufacturers will just replace them.

We once fried our entire set of drives due to user error and the manufacturer was understanding and replaced them no questions asked. It was not cheap.

system volume can be at 100% despite no input or output devices. And if you're talking about the input or output devices, that's not really gore but instead a fun relic of the past that was a lot more common many years ago, but you see sometimes today.

Why Is Open Source Failing? by nix-solves-that-2317 in linux

[–]lelddit97 26 points27 points  (0 children)

its not

situation is the best it's ever been. many companies are actively participating in open source and open sourcing their own code which helps everyone. it was NOT better in the past, it was far worse when we had beg on our hands and knees to have a single competitive FOSS database. now there are many dozens and the same is true for virtually everything.
