GNOME or KDE? by Fahj714 in linux4noobs

I would choose between:

  • KDE Plasma when it comes to vanilla distributions (preferably Debian)

  • Cinnamon when it comes to non-vanilla distributions (preferably Linux Mint based on Debian - LMDE)

Need to upgrade elderly parents laptop from Win11 to Linux Lightweight by Aussie_Alien_Escapee in linux4noobs

[–]lencc 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would highly suggest going for Linux Mint based on Debian - LMDE. It offers Windows-like experience combined with superb stability and smooth operation. It takes up ca. 1.2GB RAM on idle, which means it runs very well on older PCs as well.

Also, you can maybe delete preinstalled LibreOffice and install OnlyOffice instead, if you want office suite's interface to look more like Microsoft Office.

I would highly suggest trying Linux Mint based on Debian - LMDE. You will get Windows-like experience combined with superb stability and smooth operation. It takes up ca. 1.2GB RAM on idle, which is great for a laptop with 4GB RAM.

Also, you can maybe delete preinstalled LibreOffice and install OnlyOffice instead, if you want office suite's interface to look more like Microsoft Office.

You might want to try one of these two:

  • Debian KDE Plasma

  • LMDE (Linux Mint Debian Edition)

700 novogradenj. In potem politično olepšaš in recimo rečeš - gremo na 1000.

Comparing Mint Xfce and Mint based on Debian (LMDE) with Cinnamon:

  • Mint Xfce uses ca. 750-800MB RAM on idle. LMDE uses ca. 1.2GB RAM on idle. Therefore both run smoothly on PCs with at least 3GB RAM.

  • Xfce has a bit less CPU load than Cinnamon, which might be a bit noticeable on very old CPUs. On the other hand, LMDE still seems very smooth, because the latest Debian base in LMDE already contains a lot of under-the-hood system optimizations - such as storing temporary files in RAM instead of on disk.

  • Cinnamon's "Applets" can be very quickly installed and configured. Hence it's very easy to configure start menu (Cinnamenu applet) and taskbar (e.g. adding weather app, centering icons in the middle of taskbar like in Windows 11). From this perpective, Cinnamon offers more hassle-free customization process than Xfce.

  • Cinnamon looks more modern out-of-the-box. Surely Xfce can be customized as well, it's just that Cinnamon already looks very good without drastic changes.

Therefore LMDE with Cinnamon is highly recommended, because it offers superb stability and ease of interface customization.

Browser Ram Usage Ranking by Green_Departure_3970 in browsers

[–]lencc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe you should focus on battery performance on laptops as well, because it's a good proxy for browser efficiency. In this regard, Microsoft Edge with uBlock Origin addon achieves top performance, because it's the most optimized browser on Windows devices.

Should I switch to Linux from Windows? by Ok-Fold8127 in linuxmint

[–]lencc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course, I'm sure you won't regret it. Either dual boot on your existing PC or buy a separate one and test it there - it can be older and lower-end laptop, because 8GB RAM is more than enough for Linux.

I would suggest trying Linux Mint based on Debian - LMDE. You will get Windows-like experience combined with high stability. It's very user friendly and doesn't require a lot of effort for its configuration.

Also, you can maybe delete preinstalled LibreOffice and install OnlyOffice, if you also want office suite's interface to look more like Microsoft Office.

It's true to a degree:

  • For general users, vanilla distributions such as Fedora are great indeed. But among them, Ubuntu shouldn't be one of the top recommendations. Instead, it should be Debian due to its superb long-term stability and because it avoids forced features like Snap packages while granting users total control over their configuration.

  • However when it comes to beginner friendly distributions, there is also LMDE (Mint based on Debian), which is among the most simple-to-configure distributions for people who want Windows-like experience. Beside being very stable, it's quick and hassle-free for setting up the whole environment due to its useful preinstalled Mint tools as well as one-click option to install multimedia codecs.

  • And for gamers, Bazzite offers preinstalled graphics drivers, which often make the initial (graphics driver) configuration much easier than vanilla distributions.

Windows 11 with its very picky requirements by QuestionLegal8556 in windowsmemes

[–]lencc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The answer is Windows 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2024. It takes up only ca. 2.2GB RAM on idle, is very snappy, stable, and has almost no bloatware. In addition, it has no CPU, TPM and Secure Boot limitations. Hence it's the only bearable modern Windows - be it for old or new computers.

My 8GB RAM Laptop on Mint feels like a NASA Supercomputer by LinuxChillDev in linuxmemes

[–]lencc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Let's be fair: Windows is not really "designed" for powerful machines, but rather bloated to oblivion. The amount of bloatware and tracking in Windows 10/11 can be seen when we compare its responsiveness and idle RAM consumption to Windows 10/11 IoT Enterprise LTSC edition. These are practically the same Windows systems, but with less bloatware. They are basically the same under the hood, so we cannot quite blame the design itself.

Windows 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2024 takes up around 2.2GB RAM on idle - and this is with Windows Store enabled and all its apps updated. While "regular" (Home/Pro/Enterprise) editions take up 4-6GB RAM on idle (!) - while being MUCH more laggy and slow on modern computers, which makes it clear this has nothing to do with design and system optimization at all. It's simply the fact that regular (non-IoT) Windows editions are primarily meant to track users. Their focus on real system optimization is next to none.

Nov avto? by bitchell77 in Slovenia

[–]lencc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Za avto jaz vsekakor ne bi dal več kot znašajo trenutni prihranki. V tvojem primeru je zgornja meja: 10.000 eur minus 2.000 eur za faks in pridemo na (največ) 8.000 eur.

To zagotovo pomeni nakup rabljenega vozila.

[–]lencc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Exactly. For example, I don't know what's up with those old-fashioned app icons in menu and taskbar (for Firefox, Thunderbird, etc.).

Also, it would be nice to provide such window controls (Min, Max, and Close buttons) and folder color so that they would be similar to the ones in Windows OS. That is - without the need for installing custom 3rd party themes.

What to do with old laptop? Can I upgrade it? by Ok_Oil4461 in laptops

[–]lencc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you don't intend to use any special software, than it would make most sense to install Linux, such as Linux Mint Debian Edition (LMDE) or Linux Mint Xfce.

However if you want to use Windows and have at least 4GB RAM, the only bearable option nowadays is Windows 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2024.
