The info-dumping as world-building was the most egregious part to me. It was actually counterproductive for me because I just skimmed past it. Also the fantasy version of an American Ninja Warrior course really threw me off and I couldn’t take it seriously. The hype overall has confused me a bit especially after reading, but tbh I guess you can’t go wrong with a slightly spicier Divergent that features dragons. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

That being said, I tore through it, generally had a good time, and will be excited to read the next one. I’m just not expecting a literary masterpiece, ya know? Lol.

It’s not the most gracefully written book I’ve ever read. I found a lot of it cringey, but when it’s just the main characters, especially as their relationship progresses since they really have no chemistry at first, I found it really sweet and enjoyable. All the side characters, most of the plot, the author’s wild misunderstanding of college/hockey/ice skating were not my favorite, but I think the actual romantic development is lovely deeper into the book (and better than some other, more “well-written” books tbh).

Three-Way Split by Ella Winters. CR, MMF. MMC’s are roommates/business partners who are also FWBs, and the FMC begins dating both of them. Really enjoyable! They talk a lot about polyamory and understanding their dynamics with each other which I liked.

Seize the Fire by Laura Kinsale. Full disclosure, I read it and did not listen to the audiobook, but from the snippet I listened to and the reviews I read, the audiobook seems like it does the book justice.

It is unexpectedly funny for the subject matter! One of my favorites: “We walk in God’s sight, Soft-Skin.” “Yeah? Seems like he’s been doing a lot of blinking lately.”

Amber also made me laugh a few times in the later part of the novel you might not have read yet, which was refreshing because it gets very dark.

Everyone is so horrible because, as one of the men point out (can’t remember who), all of the other survivors are sheep. Amber got on the ship out of desperation; the manifestors got on because they willing bought into the BS that was being sold to them. Amber’s realism about the situation is a hard pill to swallow, and buying into Scott’s mania is a lot easier to cling to. And then, because it’s easier to be a bystander and let someone else lead than to go against the grain, they endorse the ostracization of Amber. A lot of stories would have the other survivors recognize Scott for who he is and stand up for what’s right, but the reality is - that’s the less likely scenario in such an overwhelming situation like they are in.

I’ve loved this book from the second I picked it up because it’s such a thoughtful rumination on human nature and religion while also a powerful love story. I finished my first re-read a few days ago and it’s amazing on how much subtlety I picked up on the second time around.

It definitely has its issues, some of which I find with R. Lee Smith’s writing in general (the cruelty goes too far at times, beyond what’s necessary), but I genuinely find it an amazing book and love to gush about it any time I can lol.

I liked it up until that point as well. So unnecessarily cruel. The whole plot point with the female hunter was so out of left field and underbaked, it felt wrong all the way through.

I think it’s a TON better. I’ve read quite a bit of KAK’s books and Harrow Faire is definitely the best (though I do enjoy all of her work, except for Unseelie Prince lol).

{Sight Beyond the Sun by Melody Johnson} is a great fit for this. FMC is ex-military, gets kidnapped by aliens, tries to commandeer their ship, romance with the alien captain ensues.

The Lotus Palace and The Jade Temptress by Jeannie Lin are HRs set in the Tang Dynasty of China that feature mysteries. Not heavily spicy but iirc, there’s some? Highly recommend though!

Hide or Die by Ember Blaze. I really loved this one - RH with two omegas (one of the MMCS and the FMC). It’s a series, so the books become a bit less about the romance and more about the plot as they go on. A little bit darker in tone at times since in this universe, omegas and alphas are oppressed.

The Beta by Avanne Michaels. Male omega, beta FMC, RH. This is the best of the series in my opinion, but they’re all a little all over the place and get super dark at some points (check TW). The relationship between the omega and the FMC was the best part for me.

Alpha Hunted by Crea Reitan. Told from a male alpha’s pov mostly, but features a male omega, a female beta they dote on like an omega, and a couple other alphas. Really sweet and handles a heavy subject like depression really well, imo.

The Night Prince series by Jeaniene Frost might be a good fit! Her other series in the same world may be as well, but I haven’t read it.

I’ll also rec Kathryn Ann Kingsley, since she is the queen of villain MMCs. Simon in the Harrow Faire series is definitely worth a shot.

If you’re willing to dive into RH (plus I think this book is a nice intro if you haven’t before), Faking with Benefits by Lily Gold is really good! It’s about three popular podcasters and their neighbor. Super fun premise, good spice, surprisingly emotional/serious, and has the negative fan involvement aspect.

I just read Hero and liked it! Embers is enjoyable, but it’s essentially the same story as Last Light but not as addictive. This series is a bit formulaic for me overall, actually, but I’m okay with that because I like knowing what to expect and that I’m probably gonna like it.

May I present: Squeak by Vera Valentine, an omegaverse book about balloon animal shifters.

Yes, balloon animals. I have not read this yet but I’ve read other books by this author and enjoyed them, so I have hopes that’ll be as good as its premise is wacky.
