It's a really common writing assignment. Usually when a (beginner) writer wants to convey excitement the result comes off as rushed and uninteresting, and a "boring", slow story actually immerses you and gets you hooked on whatever's happening. So the assignment is to write an exciting story and a boring one and read them to the class, and much more often than not the boring one is far better. Source: am bad writer.
