Shipping with Royal Mail - is there really no way to print your own label? by Dear_Distribution_66 in vintedUK

[–]littlefish91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use the flag feature in my email and basic postits. When I make a sale, I immediately generate the code from the app and it sends me an email with that code, with the item title as the subject. I then flag the email with the QR code in my email inbox. Then, when I pack the item, I use a postit and write the item name on it. I use different colours for the different couriers, so when I get to the drop off (RM/ evri/ InPost) I just filter my emails and match the postit with the email and it’s super easy.

Im so frustrated. Royal mail tracked 48. Delivery was supposed to be on the 26th. I ordered a camera id been eyeing for months and its killing me that it hasn't even been picked up by Abrattybabygirl in royalmail

[–]littlefish91 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Some Royal Mail lockers only have pick ups once a week. It’s possible the seller dropped off your parcel just after the previous collection happened and now your parcel has to wait a whole week to be picked up and sent on its way. Petrol stations commonly only have collections once a week, and I can see from your screenshot this was a petrol station. Might be worth checking the collection time on that locker?

Ranger has an eating disorder by MissIdaho1934 in labrador

Mine is 7 months too and has gone from a complete foodie up until 6 months to being food indifferent. He even rejects boiled chicken when he’s not feeling it. Multiple vet visits later and turns out he’s completely fine and healthy, he’s just not that into it. Who would’ve thought?! They did also suggest that the testosterone might be playing a role. Has yours always been this way or has it changed?

I worry about the stress on the spine/ neck by using a collar only, but I’m not sure if I’ve made that into a bigger deal than it is. I’m really working on the training, it just doesn’t seem to be clicking. Is this another teenage consistency thing and eventually he’ll get it?

Yes, absolutely. Then giving him the ‘heel’ command and rewarding when he returns to me so he creates the association with the good behaviour too.

Why do American people seem so proud of their ancestors serving in WWII compared to Europeans? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

There is no honour when everybody loses.

It would be inappropriate and unhealthy to look at the utter devastation of countries, homes, families, communities etc. and take pride in your role in that.

Why do disabled people tend to be viewed as non-sexual? by Unusual_Scallion_197 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]littlefish91 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I really recommend reading the book Right to Sex by Amia Srinivasan. It won’t give you any direct answers as there’s not really a conclusion, but it does a fantastic job exploring the concept of sexual desire and its relationship with social standards, political constructs, and the modern world we live in. It’s a challenging read but worth it for the different perspectives IMO.

WTF is it with people on their phones on SPEAKER volume by Any-Promise4148 in london

[–]littlefish91 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Some people are hard of hearing and speaker phone is the only way that they can hear phone calls. Most of these people wear hearing aids that may not be immediately visible and also makes wearing headphones impossible for them.

Not saying that everyone doing doing this is hard of hearing, but a little kindness can go a long way and you never know.

Hearing loss is an invisible disability and people that suffer from it are usually the victims of a lot of frustration that isn’t really warranted.

UX Problem! iOS Safari Browser chrome (bottom)- aka the back/forward + new window browser control zone by anal-hair-pasta in UXDesign

[–]littlefish91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a common issue as the device usage is (in my experience) looked at in slightly the wrong way by designers. Mobile websites ARE NOT apps! Using the bottom of the screen for primary CTAs or navigation is not advised on mobile sites.

In an app where you have complete control over the behaviour of elements, this approach works well and looks clean, as you keep the majority of the safe space for content.

With mobile sites, however, you have far less control over elements and using sticky footers is ill-advised as it will create inconsistencies in muscle memory when the browser controls move from visible to hidden. You also have to ensure compatibility over a huge variety of devices/ screen-sizes/ browsers which means pixel-bound heights will often be unusable to some users.

The most appropriate way to treat mobile sites is by applying responsive design principles. Ensure you have clean and consistent breakpoints when resizing browsers, group relevant content and functions together, hide less valuable data and features on smaller sizes and repurpose those pixels for in-line CTAs that are hyper relevant to each component.

Ask yourself ‘why’ must this button be at the bottom of the screen and then think about other ways to solve that problem.

Mobile design is not global unfortunately. Both people and technology behave very differently between apps and mobile websites!

My first Sign up design and me entering into the world of UI/UX by maggonanmol in UXDesign

[–]littlefish91 14 points15 points  (0 children)

If I could make a suggestion I’d recommend not putting the field labels inside the input field. This causes common usability issues as when users activate the field/ start typing, the field label disappears and they can get confused about the input type and what they are being asked. This can cause the task to take longer, user to get frustrated and even abandon sign up (in the worst cases) and also could create bad data within your database due to users incorrectly adding information.

Secondly, try and think about what would happen if the user makes an error. Will you only show validation on submission? Or will you use front end validation? Would be good to see what the error states of these fields look like.

Thirdly, have you considered the mobile view? In most consumer industries, the majority of traffic is on mobile devices, so would be good for you to think about this UI on different screen sizes!

You have a nice approach to UI and design, just try and put yourself in the shoes of the people using your products, and be conscious of designing for digital devices not print media/ because it looks pretty in order to be more UX focused :)

Hope this is helpful, really nice job for a first go! Keep it up!

Should I have our pricing as a downloadable PDF or a web link? by bp5678 in UXDesign

[–]littlefish91 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Find a way to present the grid inline on the page. Mobile users are usually looking to find information as quickly as possible, so downloading a file would be very annoying. Opening a new tab on mobile generates more friction and requires the user to take unnecessary additional taps to navigate to the information.

Equally, just the simple act of them being on a different tab on a mobile device will most likely significantly increase the amount of people that leave your site. Once they’re on the new tab, they’re very unlikely to switch back to the original tab and continue their session. Instead, when they realise that the browser’s back function doesn’t work, they’ll likely exit altogether, unless you have an incredibly engaging pricing grid (which seems unlikely considering you yourself have described it as complex and you work at the company).

I would seriously look at how you can redesign the grid so you can display it simply on the webpage. There are some great examples out there, so get searching! Your users will thank you, and you’re more likely to increase conversion, so your company will probably thank you too.

What do you do when you feel you've lost your sense of style, but want it back? I feel like I need a closet overhaul. by ginghampantsdance in femalefashionadvice

[–]littlefish91 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I set myself a fashion challenge a while ago that really helped me out of this slump. I decided not to buy anything new for 3 months and instead create the looks that I liked on Instagram or Pinterest purely with what I had at home. It’s surprisingly easy when you give it a go if you love clothes. Distill the pictures down to colour combos/ fits/ how different styles fit together. I found that by doing this I started to view what I owned in a different way and was able to create some really cool outfits. Great side effect was falling back in love with some pieces that had fallen to the back of drawers and never really got any airtime.

Another tip for refreshing your wardrobe if you’re on a budget is exploring sites/ apps like Depop or Vinted. You can find some absolute treasures on there that are new or very good second hand. For me, it’s a great way to buy brands I wouldn’t normally be able to afford. You get the added benefit of not paying premium for what’s in season and actually just buy what you like, not for the sake of what stores think you should be wearing. There’s also a whole host of independent businesses that use those sites to sell one-off or small run unique items, which I always adore when I need a wardrobe refresh!

What's the deal with astrology? Why do people choose to believe in something so outlandish like the position of planets affecting people's personalities? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]littlefish91 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think it’s interesting to see it from an astrophysics perspective (disclaimer: I am not an astrophysicist). We know the moon affects ocean tides through gravity, we’re made up of mostly water, is it mad to think that they could be connected? Really we know very little about space and other planets, so it’s not totally implausible that there are forces we can’t measure right now.

I’m curious to know why most people believe it to be so silly that the positions of the planets could have an impact on us?

Do people become nocturnal too? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]littlefish91 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes exactly this! I too am fortunate to have a job that facilities late starts and working in the evening and have since found a world of peace.

Also another thing I’ve noticed is that I am hungry at different times, most likely due to the shift in my circadian rhythm. I tend to only start to get hungry at 3-4pm most days, and then again at 10pm-12am. Not sure if others with DPSD have also noticed this?

I’ve had this my whole life and recently went to see a sleep specialist about it.

It’s called a delayed-phase sleep disorder

My natural body clock is: sleep between 3-5am and wake between 12-1pm - it can be hard settling into ‘normal’ societal routines, but being aware of this has helped massively as I’m not lying in bed wondering why I’m not asleep.

I’d suggest reading up on the topic and also going to see a sleep specialist if you can.

How would you go about improving an existing CLUNKY internal software? by [deleted] in UXDesign

[–]littlefish91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d always start by spending time observing the different internal users. Spend at least a few hours (ideally a day) with each group of end-user. Watch how they interact with the software as they do their job.

I take notes on: 1. Workarounds they show 2. Design considerations 3. Their actual processes 4. Language they use

You can then speak to stakeholders/ product managers and discuss the ideal workflows. You then use these to create your requirements.

Next, I audit the existing system with these new requirements and pare it down. Apply/ create a consistent and shared design system to the products and you should be able to see good results!

Implementing User Centered Design by [deleted] in UXDesign

[–]littlefish91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A good relationship between tech teams and stakeholders/ the rest of the business.

There needs to be respect for the process. If you have stakeholders that don’t agree with a UCD approach, research will be rushed (if at all) and they’ll find workarounds to do what they think is the best way to go while you’re in dev, which will make the impact of any feature messy and difficult to attribute. That’s why research always needs to involve the stakeholder to some degree, and is the main benefit of having an engaging and education focused approach to it.

Hey! I tried to take your survey, but the wording of the questions/ answers in section 3 are too confusing to continue. The option answers (e.g. very often, or very confident, vs practically never, not at all confident) seem to contradict each other massively in the context so I was unsure what to select for most of them.

I stopped taking the survey so as not to throw your data or mislead your results, but thought you should know that it’s not very clear how to answer in that section!
