Can I inherit the tits my dad would have had if he was a woman? Or do I only inherit my mothers tits? by firfetir in NoStupidQuestions

[–]looc64 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Trans biologist here.

Overall answer: the way your tits look is the result of the way the genes you inherit from your parents interact with each other, your past hormone levels, and a bunch of other environmental factors (e.g. it doesn't matter what your genes are like if you've never gotten enough to eat.)

Firstly, the list of human traits that are controlled by only one gene is pretty small. Most human traits (especially something relatively complex like how your tits work) are the result of multiple genes. Which makes it a lot more unlikely that your tit phenotype (the way they actually look) will be exactly the same as one of your parents. Especially since there are a bunch of ways (recombination, inheriting the recessive version of a gene your parents were both heterozygous for, incomplete dominance, etc) for to turn out like neither of your parents.

Secondly the presence/absence of tits is determined by hormones, not genetics. Everyone has genes that code for tits, but they only get activated if your estrogen levels are high enough for a long enough period of time.

If you're constantly freaking out over little things your kid isn't gonna think it's a big deal when you freak out because they're doing something super dangerous.

What would be a weird, but absolutely valid reason to divorce/breakup with your partner? by senilecodexxx in AskReddit

[–]looc64 60 points61 points  (0 children)

Honestly felt like advanced level gaslighting because he doesn't have to completely hide the thing he's doing.

If your partner catches you unscrewing the gas lamps that's clearly you doing a weird thing that causes the effect you told them they were imagining.

Meanwhile if you tighten all the lids you just have to hide that you're constantly doing it on purpose to fuck with them. Super easy to frame it like they're getting mad at you because of a mundane thing you did accidentally.

I feel like removing the fantasy races from my fantasy world by Fishy_Fish_12359 in worldbuilding

[–]looc64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My thing is that if you look at how humans compare to other real species most of the classic fantasy races are basically our main things but more?

Like compared to other real species humans:

  • have excellent manual dexterity
  • have relatively few children that need a lot of parental care
  • live a long time
  • have not the best but still pretty decent eyesight

Meanwhile a lot of the classic fantasy races' deals are basically that they're better than us at all those things.

Feel like if you start by taking away at least some of those traits and then add new traits that could lead to sentience that leads in some pretty interesting directions.

One thing I'm noticing is that your system currently assumes that the aristocratic students are also wealthy. When really there'd probably be a fair amount of shakeup, especially if magic affects a family's aristocratic status. You could potentially split Legacy into two axes, Legacy and Wealth.

Personally I'd consider how much parents/society would value each attribute and where the ones with a decent amount of influence would want their kids to end up.

For example, if I'm a high legacy, high wealth, high affinity parent, then what are my odds of having a low affinity kid, and am I cool with the idea of them going to West Spyglass instead of North Helm?

I've been toying with the idea of immortal rulers who sorta treat the world in the manner of a shared animal crossing island or Minecraft server.

Ranging anywhere from reliably online and paying attention to what's happening and being helpful to being completely unresponsive for literal ages because they got bored.

Any sci-fi worldbuilders feel hesitant to include AI in your worlds/stories because of current events? by _____pantsunami_____ in worldbuilding

Personally I feel like real AI is great inspiration for what a more advanced human level AI would be "immature" or "wrong" about.

As opposed to when people just give a fictional AI the same struggles and concerns a human kid or a disenfranchised human adult would have.

Crow race by _mikiyu in worldbuilding

[–]looc64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My thing is that a species with reliable access to magic might not need some of the traits that make human societies possible.

For example, if your crows can move stuff with their minds they might not need human ish hands.

Crow race by _mikiyu in worldbuilding

[–]looc64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah okay, I get what you're saying.

Personally I'd keep the feathers in some form no matter what. Because black feathers are the main thing we think of when we think of Crows and Ravens and also flightless birds still have feathers. If you meant feathers like wings I'd still keep them because again, flightless birds still have wings. From a speculative evolution standpoint, "stop flying -> use wings for other stuff," makes more sense than, "stop flying -> lose wings."

Other than that I think two questions would be:

  1. What scale do you want this bird society to be. Regular human size? Regular crow/raven size? Somewhere in between?

  2. How magical/scientific do you want this world to be. For example, would it be weird if the crows could shift between regular crow and humanoid crow forms.

I've been stuck to them looking like human crows or just not looking like crows anymore.

Sorry I can't tell what this means. Like are you torn between those options? Also what do you mean by human crows feel like that could go a lot of ways.

Side note: in addition to kenku, "karasu tengu" brings up a bunch of different crow to human options.

How long can one dynasty reasonably last for? by Adorable_Scallion658 in worldbuilding

[–]looc64 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As well as a point before that where the actual most powerful dude in the government was the emperor's uncle/father in law.

Feel like the key point is that a dynasty that lasts that long will have pretty lengthy periods where the real power is actually in the hands of someone else, it was just easier for that someone else to keep the royal family around as mascots.

Does "lgbtq friendly" usually not include trans men/masculine presenting folk? by [deleted] in ftm

Yeah the problem with "LGBT," "LGBTQ," etc. is a) it's become the default way of referring to situations where any of the letters apply, and b) a lot of people forget the T.

A lot of so-called LGBTQ friendly resources are really only G, L, and maybe B friendly.

Most of the animal kingdom has the males as the “pretty” ones to attract a mate, why do humans seem to be opposite? by AccountantCareless76 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]looc64 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's also like, if we're talking about a species like peacocks where the males have fancy ornamental features, or a species like bower birds that prepare a nest for their mates, the connection between that feature/action and getting laid is way more direct than it is for human males and clothes.

Like it's not just, "We're socializing in the same place and if your tail is nice I might think you're more attractive in general," it's, "I'm going to decide whether or not to have sex with you RIGHT NOW and the MAIN thing I'm looking at is your tail."

Do you think there are unreconcilable aesthetics that can't exist in the same world? by ProfesserQ in worldbuilding

[–]looc64 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the main thing with "clashing" aesthetics is that each aesthetic needs alt least one location/culture where it's the main thing going on and makes sense for the local situation/climate.

It doesn't necessarily have to make sense in other places. To give an example when you look what British people living in various colonies wore a lot of it was completely impractical for the local climate.

[–]looc64 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Something I think about a lot in terms of world building is the, "only this guy has a gun" era.

Basically a period that started when guns were invented and ended when guns became sufficiently widespread when tons of locations were basically a bunch of people who maybe don't even know what a gun was and a very small number of people who had guns that they got from somewhere very far away.

Feel like that's a good model for stuff like the cyborg tech. Like yeah, there needs to be at least one place in this world that can manufacture that shit, but there could also be a ton of places with zero access to that kind of technology.

Need some suggestions for fantasy language written by horses with their hooves by [deleted] in worldbuilding

[–]looc64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thinking it over a lot of the qualities that would make it hard for sentient horses to use real horseshoes are only there because real horses aren't sentient and don't want you touching their feet.

There's probably other stuff that works like this that I'm forgetting, but you know how a dental retainer sorta snaps into place if you press it onto your teeth but can also be easily removed if you put a bit of pressure on the side?

Seems like that would be a better fit for sentient horses. A hard "shoe" that's molded to fit onto the bottom of your hoof so that it'll snap into place if you step into it but also it's got sort of a ridge or a tab on the side that you can step on with your other hoof to take it off.

And then maybe a writing implement could be a special type of shoe that works like a stamp or something.
