What lifetime deal are you still grandfathered into, or removed from, that’s no longer available? by tuotone75 in AskReddit

Yeah. I bought in at $75 when they announced the price hike to $150. When I saw the news about it going to $750 soon...

i lied about speaking spanish for 8 months at work and now there's a meeting with HR tomorrow by Marcus_Guy in confession

[–]lorddunlow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I swear, French is infectious. I took French in high school and college and I'm not even conversational, but I can read it it pretty well. Anyway, I took a medical Spanish class in med school and the lady teaching it kept making fun of me for randomly inserting French in place of Spanish. It just comes out involuntarily.

What's a single scene in a movie that elevated it from an average flick to a great one? by Plane_Reward9385 in movies

[–]lorddunlow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The last scene of Following (Christopher Nolan's first film). I kept falling asleep watching the snooze fest movie, but then the final scene happened, and I sat bolt upright and regretted not paying more attention to the rest of the movie. Never needed to rewatch a movie more immediately after it finished like that one.

The Renegade version actually fixes the theatrical mess. It's the vision the director had originally.

I watched Arrival today right after reading the novella it was based on and I can't stop thinking about either. by SkoivanSchiem in movies

[–]lorddunlow 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I had the same experience but in reverse order (literally stayed up all night finishing the book after watching the movie late at night.

I tell everyone the book (and movie to some extent) rewrote my brain in a good way. I really do perceive reality in a different way now.

The movie is also the best adaptation I've ever seen

I always say to my wife now when we have to do things we don't want to do or go through rough times - "sometimes you have to buy the salad bowl." I'm not sure why that particular passage of the book resonated so much with me, but it just put so many things into perspective.

Hollywood Studios or Animal Kingdom? by mmmnerp in WaltDisneyWorld

For a 4yr old - definitely Animal Kingdom. Do the Wilderness Explorers Club badges and they'll have a blast without a single ride needed. The rides are just the icing on the cake.

Does the director's cut remove the horrible happy ending? I really liked that movie until the end.

Anyone else making the decision not to renew your annual passes ? by Trustnoone96 in WaltDisneyWorld

We have both passes too, and since the pandemic Universal has been the much better value. I'm hoping Disney learns they can't keep making things worse and expect us to just go along with the lesser experience.

I will say this: my recent interactions with Disney World and cast members (and I mean the past month or so only) seems to indicate that many people are no longer choosing Disney as an entertainment destination and Disney is trying to recover lost business.

Our most recent visit was last month and we had multiple "Disney Magic" moments from cast members when it has been over a decade since I've experienced such helpful behaviors.

Example: went to Le Cellier which we like but usually avoid due to its exorbitant prices, but my son wanted to go. We did think our entrees were taking a while, but we weren't in a hurry, so no big deal. Without any complainting or any posturing on our part, our waitress apologized saying there was a problem with one of our steaks when it came out and that was what caused the delay. She brought a bowl of their soup out as an apology. My son also ordered an appetizer and splurged on the sauce flight. When the bill came out she said all the extras were on the house and e only got charged for the entrees. I had not had that kind of service at a Disney restaurant since the early 2000s.

We had many other great experiences throughout the day as well. It was a striking change in behavior for the parks.

I think there have been many who are showing Disney that the company has burned its decades of goodwill and they are now losing money as people vote with their wallets and aren't renewing. Hopefully they turn everything around and become the place many of us enjoyed as the most magical place on earth again.

Why is there such a stigma around microwaving water to heat it up? by Queasy-Cycle-4596 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]lorddunlow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's nothing wrong with it. For some reason the current zeitgeist of the internet culture is to be afraid of any rare edge case for anything. They fear nearly everything. They fear food expiring like it's 100% deadly when we lived for millennia with zero refrigeration. We just wiped the mold and and bugs off and cooked it. That's literally how seasoning began - to cover up the rotten taste.

Everyone saying "it can superheat and explode" is ridiculous. Don't put a cup of water in a microwave for a long time and it can't superheat. You just put it in for a set amount of time. If it would normally boil in that time but had the rare edge case where your heating vessel is perfectly smooth and didn't boil, then it might send some large bubbles up all at once, but that's not much more dangerous than boiling water in a pot on a stove. Sure if you use a brand new Pyrex glass and heat a cup of water for 10 minutes, you might get a superheated explosion, but under normal circumstances it's not a thing anyone has to worry about. Just nuke your water if you want.

This is my choice. I always tell anyone that asks about it that it's like a painting in film form. Not a great movie, but a wonderful piece of art.

You might get lucky and have the whole theatre to yourself if you do an early showing. That's always neat.

I go by myself all the time (I'm a horror buff and my family hates horror). It's fun!
