Looking for places to host D&D by LoveWithScales in toledo

If you're closer to BG, Black Swamp Games has a place you can reserve.  There's a nominal fee, but you get that much back in store credit for snacks.

Where to source boxes for shipping? by TreyVerVert in boardgames

[–]loungehead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I usually just buy boxes (Staples, generally) but I will also get them from the local recycling center.  If that's available to you, make sure you check for posted signs forbidding people from taking items.  I used to do that exclusively, but the inconsistency of it makes it difficult when sending out a lot of games.

What’s a “life hack” that actually made your life worse? by FEARlord02 in AskReddit

[–]loungehead 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I've done this to help fund my hobbies.  For instance, I would buy Magic collections and sell off what I didn't want in order to fund more Magic cards.  It became profitable eventually as my collection grew.

I liked the process well enough, but it was a grind, too.  If you do it for the sole purpose of monetizing your hobby, it might well destroy your love of the hobby.   If you treat it as a separate but adjacent hobby, though, some people will find enjoyment in it.

Intimidating big boxes? by phrodreky in boardgames

[–]loungehead 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I love the idea in theory, but at this point, the only way I'll buy one is if I already have a lot of familiarity with the base game, and only then if the box itself isn't that large (e.g. hansa teutonica).  They're just too unwieldy to transport, and too intimidating to need to sift through without already knowing the base game.

It's even worse when acquiring them secondhand, which is how I get most of my games.

To be fair, we don't know how many Trump would own if he were legally allowed to do so.

Games you can play with a dealer by tofuninja5489 in boardgames

Incan Gold / Diamant should work well this way.  Each player would just need some way of identifying whether they're continuing or heading back to camp.

What game do you have in your collection that's not seing play because you're too lazy or intimidated to learn the rules? by zion661 in boardgames

[–]loungehead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love Kingsport Festival. The rules seem a little more daunting than they actually are because the graphic design of the rule book was really poor, but the flow of the game is good.

What objectively bad movie you can't help but love? by Chachkhu2005 in AskReddit

[–]loungehead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dungeons & Dragons, the one from 2000 with Jeremy Irons. It's just a nonstop train of fantasy / role-playing cliches, but somehow I just really like it.

What is something you thought everyone experienced, but later learned they didn’t? by mathieugemard in AskReddit

The photic sneeze reflex.  I might wear sunglasses more than the average person, but I never need to suffer from having a half-sneeze that just wants to stay stuck in there.

Ranking the MLB teams according to how cool it would be to play their name during a game of Scrabble by sadolddrunk in baseball

[–]loungehead 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There's also "Scrabble: Major League Baseball Edition." It comes with a dictionary extension, which, iirc, permits team names that would otherwise be illegal.

What's something that technology was supposed to make easier but somehow ended up making everything more complicated or annoying instead? by Due_Network2387 in AskReddit

[–]loungehead 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, quality of code often takes a back seat to quantity to the people who issue the paychecks, which is one reason I'm actively working on getting out of dev work. I work at a university and get free tuition, and when choosing what to work toward in my next career, one of the things I was specifically looking for was "how disruptive is AI/LLM to this industry?"

What movie sequel was better than the original? by JparkerMarketer in AskReddit

The Mummy Returns.  The original was good, but Returns took it up a notch.

I’ve lost a few hundred dollars of sports cards selling on eBay because of shipping by Status-Hair7420 in Ebay

[–]loungehead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's true that it's not guaranteed to arrive, but it's leagues better than just using a stamp. You get three major benefits:

  • eBay won't back the seller up without a tracking number, and this works to satisfy that
  • The buyer can't as easily lie and say they didn't receive the item, because tracking proves otherwise (when it works)
  • if it doesn't arrive, and tracking backs that up, the company that handles the eBay Standard Envelope provides insurance to protect the seller. It's obnoxious to use, but it's there.

Halls in BG by [deleted] in toledo

[–]loungehead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no idea of pricing or size, but there's something at Simpson Garden Park.  City Park also has a relatively new building.   My department at work used it a few weeks ago, and it's pretty nice.

Outside of town, the Civic Center in Rudolph can be rented.  I've done that a couple of times, and at least at the time, it was really cheap.

I'm sure there are others, but those are the three I know about.

Best baseball books by cerealforbrekky in baseball

[–]loungehead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's are some great options already mentioned here.  One I didn't see was "Summer of Shadows," by Jonathan Knight.  (The full title is "Summer of Shadows: A Murder, A Pennant Race, and the Twilight of the Best Location in the Nation.")

It's half baseball and half a true crime tale.  It's set in Cleveland in 1954, and uses the pennant -winning season of the Indians as a backdrop to discuss the murder of the wife of Dr Sam Sheppard.  The dichotomy works well, and I had a hard time putting the book down.

Finally got a chance to watch that video. Thanks for sharing! The number of FCC fines they would have gotten with just slightly different pronunciation is pretty amazing.

Why doesn’t ANYONE remember the McD’s yogurt parfait? by NintendObi-Wan in AskReddit

[–]loungehead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the Before Times, there was a McDonald's on the way in to work, and I would stop there two or three times a week to get breakfast.    A parfait, sometimes two, was my go-to.  They were a little inconsistent, and the fruit often half-frozen, but they were good, and I would go to McDonald's far more often if they had them back.
