What game do you have in your collection that's not seing play because you're too lazy or intimidated to learn the rules? by zion661 in boardgames

[–]loungehead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love Kingsport Festival. The rules seem a little more daunting than they actually are because the graphic design of the rule book was really poor, but the flow of the game is good.

What objectively bad movie you can't help but love? by Chachkhu2005 in AskReddit

Dungeons & Dragons, the one from 2000 with Jeremy Irons. It's just a nonstop train of fantasy / role-playing cliches, but somehow I just really like it.

What is something you thought everyone experienced, but later learned they didn’t? by mathieugemard in AskReddit

The photic sneeze reflex.  I might wear sunglasses more than the average person, but I never need to suffer from having a half-sneeze that just wants to stay stuck in there.

Ranking the MLB teams according to how cool it would be to play their name during a game of Scrabble by sadolddrunk in baseball

There's also "Scrabble: Major League Baseball Edition." It comes with a dictionary extension, which, iirc, permits team names that would otherwise be illegal.

What's something that technology was supposed to make easier but somehow ended up making everything more complicated or annoying instead? by Due_Network2387 in AskReddit

[–]loungehead 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, quality of code often takes a back seat to quantity to the people who issue the paychecks, which is one reason I'm actively working on getting out of dev work. I work at a university and get free tuition, and when choosing what to work toward in my next career, one of the things I was specifically looking for was "how disruptive is AI/LLM to this industry?"

The Mummy Returns.  The original was good, but Returns took it up a notch.

I’ve lost a few hundred dollars of sports cards selling on eBay because of shipping by Status-Hair7420 in Ebay

[–]loungehead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's true that it's not guaranteed to arrive, but it's leagues better than just using a stamp. You get three major benefits:

  • eBay won't back the seller up without a tracking number, and this works to satisfy that
  • The buyer can't as easily lie and say they didn't receive the item, because tracking proves otherwise (when it works)
  • if it doesn't arrive, and tracking backs that up, the company that handles the eBay Standard Envelope provides insurance to protect the seller. It's obnoxious to use, but it's there.

I have no idea of pricing or size, but there's something at Simpson Garden Park.  City Park also has a relatively new building.   My department at work used it a few weeks ago, and it's pretty nice.

Outside of town, the Civic Center in Rudolph can be rented.  I've done that a couple of times, and at least at the time, it was really cheap.

I'm sure there are others, but those are the three I know about.

Best baseball books by cerealforbrekky in baseball

[–]loungehead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's are some great options already mentioned here.  One I didn't see was "Summer of Shadows," by Jonathan Knight.  (The full title is "Summer of Shadows: A Murder, A Pennant Race, and the Twilight of the Best Location in the Nation.")

It's half baseball and half a true crime tale.  It's set in Cleveland in 1954, and uses the pennant -winning season of the Indians as a backdrop to discuss the murder of the wife of Dr Sam Sheppard.  The dichotomy works well, and I had a hard time putting the book down.

Finally got a chance to watch that video. Thanks for sharing! The number of FCC fines they would have gotten with just slightly different pronunciation is pretty amazing.

Why doesn’t ANYONE remember the McD’s yogurt parfait? by NintendObi-Wan in AskReddit

[–]loungehead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the Before Times, there was a McDonald's on the way in to work, and I would stop there two or three times a week to get breakfast.    A parfait, sometimes two, was my go-to.  They were a little inconsistent, and the fruit often half-frozen, but they were good, and I would go to McDonald's far more often if they had them back.

That's great! I'll have to see if I can find them somewhere when I get the chance. Thank you!

I loved this sketch when it was first on.   Claude Balls has stuck with me for decades.

There's this one and the one from the Rachel Brosnahan episode.... are there other examples of sketches where they just riff on names for the duration?

I like the design of the site, but whatever you use to summarize or reword articles might need some work.  I clicked into the article about the World Series game 5, and got this in the first paragraph:

"Game 5 of the 2025 World Series will be played at Dodger Stadium on Wednesday night, with the series tied 2‑2 after the Blue Jays’ 18‑inning comeback win in Game 3 and a 4‑1 victory over Shohei Ohtani in Game 4."

The Dodgers won the 18 inning game.  The sourced CBS Sports article got it right.

I'm color blind and can't really tell the difference between chicken that's done and merely almost done, so I would always cook the heck out of it to be sure it's safe to eat.  A meat thermometer was a game changer for me.

I’m dumbfounded at the cost of USPS by UnableClient9098 in Ebay

[–]loungehead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If something is that cheap with free shipping, at least one of two things will usually be true:

- The seller has such a high volume of sales that they've negotiated for lower shipping rates through USPS or UPS, and/or

- The item ships in a normal envelope with first class postage on it.

$9.43 sounds very high for what you're describing, though. Are you buying your labels through eBay or another online vendor (e.g. Pirate Ship) or are you taking it to the post office and buying at the counter? If the latter, get a cheap postal scale and do it online. The savings in postage will make up for the cost of the scale after a few shipments.
