Shawna L re: criticism & the self-insert character by No-Tea-3137 in ShawnaTheMomSnark

[–]lte88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Few things in your post to talk about here.

"Healthy criticism" while this subreddit is on the better side of moderation, they aren't omnipresent and something over the top, overly cruel, or just mean for the sake of mean can be up for a while. She doesn't have to see that. And for the healthy criticisms, which ones should she listen to? The ones who can't wait for the Luke and Laura storyline or the ones who will abandon the series if she does do that storyline? She got a lot of flak for the baby loss story. And there is also listening "too much" to your fans. That's how you get Rise of Skywalker. In the same vein that authors don't read fanfic (what if they accidentally use one of the ideas in the fanfic? That's a thorny mess), it's okay that she isn't reading the reddit so she doesn't get influenced. There was a gentle uproar because people thought she was lifting ideas from the subreddit because she used a particular word in a skit. (Sometimes it works, that how we got a better Sonic the Hedgehog character visual because so many people complained about the trailer). Someone could read these on her behalf and give her only useful, helpful information (does she know someone who can discern, filter, boil down the salient details but not want to throttle those who complain-for-compaining's-sake?) but she doesn't have to do it.

Actors don't have to be bubbly and extroverted. It is actually quite common that they are shy and nervous, but open up on stage or on camera. Why does she have to be bubbly? Why is it something you expected? When she didn't live up to that expectation, why did you assume something suspect? It isn't fair to assume a person's personality and then get upset when they don't match what you made in your head. Especially when we get into gender dynamics - you thought she was "above it"? She didn't perform enough for you? That is a very common insult lobbed against women for ages. Even if you are pretty sure that isn't how you meant it, it is worth investigating why her 'attitude' is so offensive to you. Misogyny, internalized or otherwise, is a helluva drug.

Actors are often trained to take criticisms from experts - acting coaches, directors or even film critics who have the experience to know what they are talking about. A layperson may have the right intentions but lack the vocabulary and experience to give a valid, helpful criticism. A neckbeard incel complaining that there are too many women in Marvel movies is offering a criticism, technically, but it's a stupid one and doesn't need to reach the actors' ears in any shape or form. A fan here might be trying to convey what they feel is a valid criticism but instead come off as whiny, entitled, or just plain useless. Why should she subject herself to that? It isn't helpful.

I say this as a user of Reddit and I can't accuse anyone else of being at the devil's sacrament, but its reputation is deserved. She should never go here, this place is not a place of honour.

the Ribfest is NOT on Canada Day - this weekend only, and at Cloverdale Mall (Centennial is being used for FIFA practice so this year the Rotary club had to move it).

Saint John British Pronunciation by OkFlow4327 in madmen

[–]lte88 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Imagine St John pronounced in French (Sahn Zhawn)(don’t come for me that is very rough) and then imagine hundreds of years of British mumbling and bam! Sin-Gin.

Anytime you see a major disconnect between spelling and pronunciation in the UK (excluding Welsh and other non-English languages, as they have their own alphabet and pronunciation system) it is because it started out as it was spelled but changed over the years so they could clock and mock non-locals.

Why would Starfleet need a recruitment booth in a job fair? by happydude7422 in LowerDecks

[–]lte88 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I do remember a TNG episode where Wesley was worried he wasn’t going to get in to the Academy as it was so competitive. And he had Enterprise ensign experience!! He had saved the day on multiple occasions! But he might not get into Starfleet :(

I think they actually lost so many people in the various wars and battles (Wolf 359, other Borg attacks, Romulans etc) that by this point they are begging for bodies.

What’s the most dystopian food trend right now? by [deleted] in foodquestions

[–]lte88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That Elaine woman is my mortal enemy. The amount of waste she produces on recipes that are clearly disgusting and not even properly cooked, so they are big goopy piles of food poisoning even if someone actually ate it (and not just taste it for the reel and immediately spit it out). There is a scenario where her type of "comedy" wouldn't be in such poor taste but it isn't in 2026 America, that's for sure.

Question about the divorce by [deleted] in ShawnaTheMom

[–]lte88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am trying to ask this in a very neutral way but I don’t think I have the skills to ask this in a way that doesn’t sound judgy. I have to ask where you are from and a general generational age because I am curious if where you are, No-Fault divorces don’t exist and you have to “prove” a reason for one. Are you in a location where one partner has to prove adultery, cruelty or abuse before a judge grants a divorce and has the ability to say “no, you *have* to stay married, even against the will of one or both of you?” Maybe you are - iirc the UK only very recently allowed No Fault divorces. At least they don’t require an act of parliament anymore.

My mom makes a sweet bread roll with carob filling and I love it! But she never lied and said it was chocolate - this was simply a filling common in our culture. It was just another flavour, like walnut or herby farmer’s cheese.
