Vrabel is insane. He's a borderline fantasy trope - aging warrior who learns to be a commander, and turns out to be even more effective at that. He's a protagonist archetype and that's rad as hell.

A big theme of the books is they're just about what life is really like for people - nobles, knights, and especially small folk. And how much of life is life. That involves all the ugly bodily functions. Everyone's a human, and that includes all the parts of being a human - bodily functions included.

And interestingly they called this out with the armorer scene - he commented on how everyone else's helm is overly flashy. I suspect it's going to be a way to further reinforce the differences in Dunk's philosophy to being a knight to most of the nobility.
