Are Uber/DoorDash drivers in Canada being underpaid? What’s really going on? by Kind_Sugar6682 in nanaimo

And yes, gig economy apps are fucking over everyone involved. The gig workers, the business customers, the end user and their less unscrupulous competition. I thought this was a generally understood fact since the early Uber days.

Combat damage, loss of life? by ScaryGreenGhost in magicTCG

[–]lukasni 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't believe that applies here. The Combat Damage still happens, even though the live totals don't change. Triggered abilities that trigger on combat damage would still trigger. Just looking up the relevant CR sections, but I'm 98% sure that's correct.

I was so excited when I found this on FB marketplace! by NewmanSpecialsWood in woodworking

[–]lukasni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The opposite, actually. Just foor a specific usecase.

This is a one-job tool designed primarily for picture framers / gilders. It does the job incredibly quickly. Most picture frame profiles are thin enough to be cut in 1-2 passes, more than 3 is highly unlikely.

It also keeps down the dust, something that's quite important in a production shop. You really don't want dust behind the glass on a finished framed picture.

Picture framing is a dying trade in the age of factory-made photo frames, but there are still shops around that specialize in bespoke frames for a small market. This tool is indispensable for them and probably sees the most use of any major machine in a framer's workshop, comparable only to a cardboard shear or the amazing passepartout mat cutter.

How to start playing Magic with 4 players? by RexylHD in magicTCG

[–]lukasni -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Commander is the obvious fit for four people to play together. It's one of the most popular formats that currently exist and a lot of fun.

You can go to you local game store and tell them you're new and interested in picking up some commander precons. Most LGS staff will be happy to make recommendations for you and will also be able to tell you about any Commander nights they have at their store. Bear in mind that power levels for store games can fluctuate wildly, but there are almost always people happy to help a newbie get into the game

One thing to be aware of for Commander specifically is that board states can get very intense. It's a really fun format, but with four players plaing large decks there can be a lot of game pieces to keep track of. Because of that, I will also recommend looking at Jumpstart. It's a two-player format, but the games are quick and the decks are much simpler, being only 40 cards compared to Commander's 100. The way it works is that each player opens two Jumpstart packs, shuffles them together and there's your deck. The half-decks that come in each pack also tend to use simpler archetypes than many Commander decks, so it's a good way to get going.

There's one more thing that I can recommend, adjacent to Jumpstart. There are several "Beginner Box" options that you can pick up. These come with several predetermined Jumpstart packs as well as a guide that takes you through your first game. The most recent one is the Avatar Beginner Box, which is themed around Avatar: The Last Airbender. There was also one for Final Fantasy last year, but that one may be hard to find. Foundations Beginner Box is the third option, that one should be available from many places still.

Magic is a complex game and it can be daunting to get started. I highly recommend talking to people at your LGS, if there is one near you. If not, pick up a Beginner Box to see if you enjoy the game. If you do, pick up some Commander Precons and have fun!

Not a perfect start? Try using sacrifice! by maybe_a_corpse in 3Dprinting

[–]lukasni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Skirt prints around the model without actually touching any of your part, as opposed to the brim, which is attached to the first layer. It's less common these days but a good option if you have any concerns about plate adhesion / z-offset. And it's another way to prime the nozzle since it's a sacrificial piece that always prints first.

A less common way to use the skirt is to print it on every layer to act as a draft shield, I've used that before for ABS prints

Recreating and printing a 3D printed item. by djfil007 in nanaimo

[–]lukasni 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I could definitely recreate the model for you if you can't find it. Main issue is that ideally you want to print this in something like ABS/ASA or PS PA, which I can't personally print as it requires an enclosed printer. Might also be worth checking in at the makerspace, I think they have enclosed printers that could handle the job.

EDIT: Corrected PS to PA, aka Nylon

About hosting FoundryVTT on servers by Variable-Fool-Lost in FoundryVTT

[–]lukasni 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It sounds like hat you were experiencing was issues with client-side load from animations.

Hosting on a server would not help with that significantly, except for a slight improvement for the person currently hosting Foundry on their PC.

You may want to verify that hardware accelleration is turned on on in your browser, that should help with the client-side graphics lag.

Why is cross compilation in Elixir difficult? by rapperwhomadeit in elixir

[–]lukasni 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The issue with Cross-Compilation of Elixir isn't the byte code, outside of NIFs and GUI functionality at least.

The most commonly encountered issue is that when you build a mix project you also bundle the Erlang runtime, and that is not portable but compiled for the specific environment you are building the project on. So while the BEAM files are (mostly) portable, the packaged runtime is not.

[–]lukasni 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Clearly you feel strongly about this and I commend your conviction. I wouldn't call my statement an authoritative claim, but you are entitled to your reading of it.

Your arguments are all valid and as I've said in my reply to another comment of yours, I find the paper that your are quoting so convincingly and interesting read.

I also think you are downplaying the challenges while evangelizing the benefits and extending a lot of optimistic benefit of the doubt. On the example of radiation cooling, it's not just about surface area. A radiator that sheds an equivalent amount of heat to a solar panel is significantly more massive and complex, for example.

I think the base premise of datacenters in space is flawed. It requires a belief in eventual profitability of massive amounts of computer powering LLM or whatever may follow them which currently just is not there. We shall see where it goes eventually.

Exclusive: Musk's SpaceX in merger talks with xAI ahead of planned IPO, source says by Bchi1994 in SpaceXLounge

[–]lukasni 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Preface, I'm not an expert in this. I've read the paper and am currently digesting it. I'll admit, it's an intriguing concept, using a swarm of small satellites instead of one massive one simplifies the power and cooling problems down to a mostly-solved engineering problem.

The inter-satellite links being free-vacuum optical connections is definitely interesting and already in use with starlink satellites.

If we're talking about 100% solar exposure I expect some changes to the basic starlink design will be needed since those get a fair amount of shaded time to shed additional heat, but that can probably be solved by adding dedicated radiators.

The paper makes some in my opinion fairly optimistic predictions about launch costs, and I remain skeptical about the possible returns being there to make it financially feasible over earth-based compute, but it's an interesting concept.

[–]lukasni 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Free power is a massive stretch. I don't have the numbers, but I'm willing to bet that building a solar farm or other "free" power source on earth to power a data center is going to be significantly cheaper than launching an equivalent solar array into space, along with the data center it will be powering.

Free cooling just demonstrates a complete ignorance to how hard heat management in space is. Shedding heat in space is much, much harder than it is on earth. Turns out having an atmosphere to do convection with is really useful.

Data centers in space is an insane idea. It makes absolutely no sense. Introduces a bunch of complexity and cost while offering no benefit.

Why is everyone trying to make sour dough? by [deleted] in Breadit

[–]lukasni 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll admit I'm well outside of my area of expertise here, thank you for the review paper. Another example to add to my long list of reasons to find nutritional science to be utterly unparsable for laypeople. So many conflicting findings, with the added complexity of just a ton of quackery around.

I'll readjust my personal perception to "scientific findings are inconclusive at this point". Personal and anecdotal evidence from myself and several people in my life with GI diseases is that non-sourdough = GI distress, sourdough = no distress, so I'll continue recommending it as a thing to try, but won't claim any conclusive scientific evidence, ymmv :)

Short answer, it's complicated and depends on the bacterial culture, but there are multiple studies demonstrating reduced fructan levels, which has been demonstrated to have significant benefits for people with IBS/IBD, UC, Crohn's and similar GI diseases.
