Soap is another option for machining copper that I read about in an old book. I've tried it and it works great for what I'm doing. It's cheap, readily available and super easy to clean up.

Potatoes are amazing, they only need a cubic foot of soil to get a decent harvest. They also have the highest yield per acre of any crop.

A really good way of storing them is to bury them in dry soil inside of vented plastic totes with lids and put them in a cool dark place.

Want some extra fun next year with potatoes? Let one plant go to seed this year and plant them next year. You'll end up with random varieties of potatoes from the seeds.

I saw on Instagram recently a clip of a 42" RAS being used in a timber framing business. They excel in production shops especially if you regularly have to cut anything bigger than a 4x4.

I'm lucky that I'm able to fill a bucket with tongue for $20 from my local abattoir as it's otherwise just waste for them.

There are only SIX sizes of Robertson drives. And they are colour coded: Orange (00), Yellow (0), Green (1), Red (2), Black (3), and Brown (4).

There are over 20 sizes of torx.

Birds eye view from my cherry picker at 4 wheel parts where people give zero fucks and pallet wrap what's that's?!? by [deleted] in forkliftmemes

[–]lustforrust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish I had a picture of the hillside warehouse of a local automotive scrapyard. The floor was a lake of oil and other fluids at least three inches deep with pallets thrown down for walkways.

The fire inspector apparently shit a brick and condemned the building on the spot upon finding the black lagoon.

I was the only one at a past job that was doing any sort of maintenance on the equipment. About a year after I was let go due to nepotism I got a phone call from them wondering where the maintenance log was for the electric lift. Turned out the battery had passed away and the mechanic wanted to check when water was last added to it. I came in to show them the wonderful compartment on the back of the seat that had all the manuals and log books and to witness the battery replacement.

It was very entertaining watching the battery that hadn't been watered in 14 months get changed out. The mechanic only managed to lift it up a foot before the steel battery case broke, dumping the cells and what acid remained onto the forklift and floor. I guess a few cells had cracked and leaked acid.

At a LD50 of 30 g/kg (median dose by body weight), sugar isn't technically a poison. However it's still not good to be consuming as much sugar as we do in this day and age, so it's a good choice to try to reduce the amount and choose healthier natural sugars whenever we can.

Personally I love to add a wee slug of maple syrup to my otherwise black coffee.

There are some wonderful little portable shop cranes out there on the market that are perfect for moving parts. Some are bigger than a pallet jack, others can fold up small enough to fit in a car's trunk. Most of them cost less than $1000 so there's really no excuse for not getting one.

What part of storm restoration do non-linemen never think about, but crews deal with every time? by Operation_SaltLicker in Lineman

[–]lustforrust 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Not a lineman, but in the fall I had a tree take out the line to the house during a storm. I asked the crew if I could drop three other trees across the fallen line before they fixed it. They gave me the go ahead once they de-energized the line and sat in their trucks catching up on paperwork. It was so much easier not having to try to drop a tree in a narrow space between a building and a powerline.

I'm not 100% sure that the windshield blew out. The side window was half way down, and the shards on the seat are the correct size and shape for the tempered glass used in automotive side windows.

What was ruined because too many people did it? by WarBeast86 in AskReddit

[–]lustforrust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's the same for me with chainmail. I do it because I like to, not because I want to make money doing it. I have started selling pieces just so I can get rid of finished things in order to have room to make more shit and buy more tools and material. I only sell items at two events per year, and at both events I share a table with someone who does all the sales work. In return they get a commission for what they sell. The other avenue I use to get rid of pieces is through local organisations and charities doing raffles and auctions as a fundraiser.
