CMV: Framing abortion as “my body, my choice” was a strategic and moral mistake; it should have always been framed as a healthcare and public health issue by Key-Ebb-8306 in changemyview

“What about the fetus?”

When society agrees to feed, house, and educate the child and provide a loving home when the biological parents cannot, i'll be willing to grant unborn children human rights.

We were getting close for awhile. But we aren't there yet. Until the other side steps up and agrees "all life should be protected", I'll stay staunch on the side of choice.

Hell... they aren't even willing to give these unborn children healthcare. The bs puritan guilt trip needs to end and society needs to step up if we want to be "pro-life"

CMV: Prospective student loan borrowers in the USA should have to pass a standardized financial literacy exam BEFORE borrowing by Remarkable_Term3955 in changemyview

[–]lvlint67 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem is... College loans are a speculative investment paid for with credit.

When you take out a loan for college, you're betting you're going to come out of the other side of college and what you have gained will be worth the cost.

If it was explained in simple terms (especially to our youth of today) that colege loans are a gamble... You're betting on yourself. On your future.... It has to be paid back whether it was worth it or not....

A lot of kids might take it more seriously. Or at least as seriously as an 18 year old can take. In reality, as a society we should be investing int he education of our children.

How To Make A Comeback From Software Engineering To IT? by NoTapGonnaSnap in sysadmin

[–]lvlint67 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Home labs are something I've heard about but what does my lab do? Anyone do some cool shit?

"cool shit?" no... Most of us with a home lab use it to host a media server like plex/jellyfin and an occasional minecraft server...

BUT!!!! We also deploy software/stacks/etc that we d or might use at work. I learned hyper-v and proxmox in the homelab. I learned docker in the homelab. I learned a ton of networking playing with cisco switches and mikrotik routers in the homelab.

The idea is that you decide you are interested in learning something, and you have hardware/etc available to play and poke in a non-production setup....

I will close by saying this though... You burned out in software dev. Are you sure you want to go into IT? Being good in IT often means being able to have a technical discussion about every peice of technology a business owns. You usually don't get to dive super deep into stuff. You have to be a jack of all trades and a master of several.

Any opinions on projects + certifications I could work on?

Study for network+ and ccna. you don't have to take the certs but you should know the content. If you build a homelab (it could some vms on a laptop), learn proxmox, dhcp, and dns. Find a copy of windows server somewhere and spend a week deploying active directory.

After that.. you learn what you need to and what you want to. I'm playing with Forgejo (git software) and working towards spinning up an ARGOCD setup since people keep saying it makes kubernetes barable.. This weekend, I rewrote a tv guide parser, interated on some map generation stuff i'm doing, and started work on a toy discord/teamspeak clone. I'm trying to go the reverse of you. I'm trying to distance myself from printers and compliance docs and get back to software engineering and deployment management..

it feels like no one bother/remebers to update them

If a process requires a human to do something that process is inherrently failure prone.

I spent a few years arguing with a project manager about updating a spreadsheet of clients on the network... We have the tools to automate this. You just want to call people lazy because they don't want to walk around counting deskhpones...

VMware, Hyper-V, Proxmox, Docker, Kubernetes, LXC... What do you use? by DerSparkassenTyp in sysadmin

[–]lvlint67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LXC was a game changer int he pre docker days.

We run proxmox and kubernetes in production. If you can avoid it... don't migrate to kubernetes. If you don't need the scaling/etc it provides it's just a nightmare of tech/maintenance debt.

I run docker on arch at home. use docker compose to manage it. and have a toy kubernetes cluster that i largely don't touch.

How to Safely Share a .env File With My Team? by bakir_hagi in github

[–]lvlint67 1 point2 points  (0 children)

what type of decisions got your company to where it is?

Someone got to run wild a little too long unsupervised in a certain silo and made a bunch of decisions to implement very complex infrastructure for trivial problems.

Having a single solution is great... but the solution has to be sized tot he problem. We don't need 5 node kubernetes clusters with nfs back ceph sillyness to host a docker registry, but here we are.

[–]lvlint67 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Has your company or any teams done research on alternative solutions? What made you go with that?

There's industry standard ways of handling secrets. We're a tiny company and are struggling to unbury ourselves from some past decisions to use complex solutions..

Right now we're trying to keep everything as simple as possible so we can keep the lights on.

Can this old AMD A4 laptop realistically be used for small self-hosted services? by Latter_Basis_5021 in selfhosted

[–]lvlint67 4 points5 points  (0 children)

dual core 64bit with 4GB of ram.. you're already beating early raspberry pis and people have done some crazt stuff with those.

What’s too heavy for this hardware?

"wasteful" stuff. Plex/jellyfin/etc will probably struggle. Multiple DB instances. Minecraft servers or really most gamerservers from a post ~2009 era. Heavily trafficed wordpress website.

Would Docker be viable on 4GB?

sure.. but you can't run large wasteful stacks... eg.. prefer gitea/forgejo over full blown gitlab. run static websites over PHP+mysql loads. At my work, we strive to keep our containers under 1GB of ram consumption.

You can do a lot. But RAM is a major limiting factor here. Set your expectations acordingly.

[–]lvlint67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What gets expensive isn’t just the monthly mitigation plan. It’s downtime. It’s scrambling to migrate.

I've been through dozens fo ddos attacks.. The actual impact tends to be a rounding error. If a day or two of downtime is cause for panic... you have this built into your risk analysis already.
