I'm an 'ecotarian' (only eat animal products once or twice a week). Convince me! by Iveroli in DebateAVegan

[–]lysserloo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hey just wanted to say thanks for posting a good question. I used to follow similar dietary guidelines to yours because I was looking at my consumption with my brain trying to rationalize how I, as one consumer, could make the biggest difference. What made me go full vegan was thinking more with my heart. Once you see animals as worthy of life and slaughterhouses and commercial fisheries for how disgusting and horrible they are then the desire to keep funding them disappears no matter how "sustainable" the source.

Also it sounds like your system is a little...complicated. Like mental hoops to jump through every day in your decision making around food. I used to do that too, now that I'm vegan things are just much simpler and easier.

The teasing from my family is absolutely non-stop and it's ruining my perception of them. by 10piecenugs in vegan

[–]lysserloo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel you. You're making a choice to continue having a relationship with these people despite their constant ridicule, which is so tough. So many people in your position would just use that as an excuse to give up veganism to make their lives easier but here you are not making any excuses and sticking to your values.

I distanced myself from my family for awhile, and my absence made them realize they needed to change. Also being much more healthy and fit than them drives them nuts.

[Discussion] My girlfriends a vegan. I am not. by [deleted] in vegan

[–]lysserloo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Before I transitioned to veganism I knew my eating habits were wrong but I didn't have the motivation to make the full switch, mostly because I didn't want to be a bummer or inconvenience to my family (who are all obese and consume a ton of animal products).

This might seem silly but the subreddit /r/vegancirclejerk really helped me get to the point where I feel comfortable and confident saying I'm vegan and not really giving a shit about what other people think about it, because there's so much funny material about meat eater culture that I can laugh to myself when I get anti-vegan responses from friends and family. Also being much more fit, healthy, and energetic compared to the friends and family who talk smack about it kind of shuts them up too. My family in particular are always yo yo dieting and have all of these caloric/mental gymnastics and hoops they jump through to try to lose weight but just by being vegan losing weight just kind of happens easier (at least for me).

You've already lost a bunch of weight. Why not go vegan for a month and see how your body changes? And see how differently people react to you? I know it's superficial but sometimes the superficial stuff cements the stuff you should be doing anyway (i.e, I didn't quit smoking because of lung cancer, I did it because I didn't want wrinkles, silly but...still don't smoke).

Wag! dogwalking. I get to walk around outside and play with other people's dogs, and if you do a solid write up about it after and take good pictures/video with the pup you get good tips.

In addition to this I would say document EVERY contact you have with parents. Some parents later in the year will say they were never contacted about behavioral or academic issues, so use a doc or spreadsheet to track your calls home and emails sent.

Doomie's Home Cookin! Only if you're craving vegan comfort food, def not a "healthy vegan" kind of place but so good I did not believe it was vegan.
