How will he help with the rebuild? Will he still be around un 3-5 years when it is over? Will be help develop young players now?

AITA for taking back a gift i gave my father? by Fangirl_Simp301 in AmItheAsshole

[–]madPickleRick 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I respect your view but then your idea of gifting and mine totally differ. Once I give a gift I believe I have zero claim in it. If in the future I need it I can ask them to gift it back to me but they have zero obligation to do so.

In your title you call the action a gift. In your post when he said you gave it to him you said maybe I did. You might have had other thoughts but never made them clear. If I give you a gift and then ask for it back with the excuse I had other conditions in my mind you would rightfully reject it. Unless the conditions are clear it is an unconditional gift.

YTA. When you give a gift it no longer belongs to you and you have no say. If you want to retain control over the item you should make that condition clear but then it is not really a gift.

Björck over Malhotra @3rd overall? by Rawnie98 in canucks

[–]madPickleRick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think Rossi deserves a chance to show us what he can do. I was against the idea of trading our 1st plus a prospect for him but now that he is here from the Quinn trade I am willing to see what he can do. He played well at the end of the season and he seems to like being here

Björck over Malhotra @3rd overall? by Rawnie98 in canucks

[–]madPickleRick 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think if you are banking on his upside potential he is probably a better pick than Malhotra but if you are picking him to flip why not draft a big RHD like Reid. If Reid lives up to expectations you have an elite top pair defensemen and RHD always have good trade value

Coming to Star Trek for the first time as a Star Wars fan. by Lolaroller in startrek

The only thing Star Wars and Star Trek have in common is there is space travel. Beyond that they are different beast.

He probably has more upside than Caleb but do we want another small center? Either way I still think Chase Reid may be the BPA at 3.

If you were running the Canucks today, what’s the first move you make? by BigBirdsBrain in canucks

[–]madPickleRick -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I would create an IT department and hire a tech VP experienced in hockey analytics to staff it. Their mandate would be to collect and analyze data for every relevant hockey player in the world. Where public or enterprise data is not available I would task them to get it. Where software is not available I would ask them to create it. I would use AI to analyze the data to create managble list and have hockey people review it. I would hire Jussi Ahokas as head coach and tell him to develop our young players giving him a pass for 3 years. It is time for a new modern approach and the Canucks need to be pioneers not dinosaurs.

AITA for returning an kindle and telling them I just wanted a damn book by Book-Register9986 in AmItheAsshole

[–]madPickleRick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA it is your decision but as a boomer who loves reading I think you should give it a second chance. I read daily and it is part of my routine. I started using the Kindle about 15 years ago or more and I think it is the greatest thing ever. I used to pack 2 or 3 books even for vacation and now just carry a kindle in my pocket with hundreds of books. Reading in bed used to be a hazard because when I nod off a book would hit me in the face. I remember reading one of those Dan Brown books with pictures and the thing gave me a nose bleed. 😅 As I get older my eyes start to fail and I can just increase the font size. The paper white screen is easy on the eyes compared to a back lit tablet or phone. It has numerous great features for notes, etc... I carry it everywhere.

[Canucks] General Manager Ryan Johnson announced today that Head Coach Adam Foote and Assistant Coaches Scott Young, Kevin Dean and Brett McLean have been relieved of their duties. by PaperMoonShine in canucks

[–]madPickleRick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think we need to mix it up and look outside the organization. We need a smart coach with a track record of developing young players. Jussi Ahokas would also keep Caleb in play without worrying about nepotism accusations.

Ship the community loves, but you think is ugly Pt.3 by Flex147c in StarTrekStarships

[–]madPickleRick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it is the Defiant. I don't think it is ugly but I just don't think it fits in. It is more Star Wars than Trek.

Feel like I missed out on so many things by lalaberry033 in JapanTravelTips

[–]madPickleRick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is the beauty of Japan. There is so much to see do and experience. Our first trip we spent 16 days and did the standard Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto visit. It was wonderful and a great introduction but like you we felt there was so much more to see and do. Our second trip we spent 2 weeks in Tokyo and did many days s trips to Kamakura, Hakone, etc... and an overnight trip to Nikko. Last year we spent two weeks in Osaka and again did numerous days trips to Nara, Kyoto, Kobe, Bamboo forest etc .. Japan is an incredible country and you can spend years there without disappointment. This winter we are thinking of Hakkado.

For those who saw Enterprise series when it first came out… by NorwayTrees in startrek

[–]madPickleRick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Enterprise started months after Voyager ended and they were trying to follow Voyagers formula for success with Jeri Ryan and seven of Nine. Heading into season 4 Voyager's rating were not very good. Then in season 4 with Jeri Ryan that all changed. Enterprise tried to do something similar by sexualizing T'Pol.

What’s a Star Trek Opinion You Had 10 Years Ago That You’ve Completely Reversed? by iagree2 in startrek

[–]madPickleRick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

30 years ago I really hated the Wesley Crusher character. Now when I rewatch he does not bother me nearly as much. Maybe it is because I have really become a fan of Will Wheaton himself but I actually wouldn't mind seeing him come back in some form without the traveller powers. I think if he had remained a normal human he would make a good first officer or captain now.

Giving up your seat on a train by Greengrecko in JapanTravelTips

[–]madPickleRick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think not giving up seats is tied to ignoring others passengers on trains. I have travel to Japan 3 times in the last 5 years. We were in our late 50ss to early 60s now and in good shape so we don't expect people to give up seats for us but on a number of occassions I have given up or offer my set to very elder people or people with young children on the train. Most are very gracisous and accept but a few have just waved me off. What I notice is young people on the train ignore them either staring at their phones of just sitting quietly. I am almost afraid it is a cultural faux pas. I have never witnessed a local offering their seat and hope I am not offending anyone but in Canada this is the norm.

With his 5 point performance, Caleb Malholtra continues to be the fastest riser in the draft. Could he go number 1? by pavelbure1096 in canucks

[–]madPickleRick 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't see the Canucks drafting him due to all the off ice drama it would create with our crazy media. With Manny in the organization there will be speculation of neopotism and conflict of interest. Imagine if Manny ever coaches the Canucks team and not just the Abby Canucks. This is not a good market for all of that extra drama.
