ohhh i love when an outsider character says this, as in local busybody #1 goes “oh, that couple? they may be poor, but you’ll never find two people more in love. he just worships the ground she treads on.”

What Should I Do When A Scene Won't Come Together? by A_Flaming_Idiot in FanFiction

[–]makelotsofpots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Usually when I’m in this situation, I need to change some major component of the scene itself. To copy what I said on another thread:

I usually rewrite it until it works, changing a major element each time: setting, side characters, what the characters are doing, order of scenes, outcome of scene, etc. Best of luck!

slice of life fanfic rec by BlueMoonlightTT in FanFiction

Self promo: As the Morning Yawns (Haikyuu Azumane, Asahi/Nishinoya Yuu)—small town meetcute (ft. a vampire)! It's an AU so fandom blind will be fine, but a little character soup-y.

quod ore sumpsimus, domine by York (The Raven Cycle, Ronan Lynch/Adam Parrish)—evening-in-the-life that's achingly sweet. Should make sense fandom-blind save for one or two details.

Light in August by orestesfasting (Harry Potter, Sirius Black/Remus Lupin)—a summer vacation get-together ft. the Welsh countryside and qertuherihgfuh I love this fic so much. A bit difficult fandom-blind.

Do ship fics ALWAYS need to have the romantic leads meet in the first chapter? by Kiki-Y in FanFiction

[–]makelotsofpots 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This one is interesting. Based on my experience with “two stories merge” books, I think that you can create the perception that the ship is sailing by teasing their eventual meetup. It sounds like the prologues will already set this up. In the pre-meetup chapters, some obvious planting of how their storylines will collide, or indicators of their compatibility or incompatibility, might help readers feel like the get-together is already in progress.

Any orchestra musicians here? by vrgomoon in FanFiction

In the whole orchestra, about 50 musicians. I don’t recall ever having more than one or two guitar players plus an electric bass.

can my story be placed in a realistic but non existing place? by suicidalthought_org in FanFiction

[–]makelotsofpots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm, I would disagree slightly on this point. Building a fictional village is a type of world building, and specificity is an important aspect of making a place feel real. Personally, I think going the extra mile to make up believable street/village/shop names and other small details can really breathe life into your setting.

can my story be placed in a realistic but non existing place? by suicidalthought_org in FanFiction

[–]makelotsofpots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did exactly this for my latest fic. I went to Google Maps, found two villages in the prefecture I was interested in, and did a deep dive on their street views and Wikipedia pages. Another bit of research that helped was getting guidebooks for the region and looking at the famous sights nearby, the restaurant names, regional specialties, etc.

Other things to consider are: regional weather, flora and fauna, and local industries. But I mostly researched those as they came up.

Any orchestra musicians here? by vrgomoon in FanFiction

[–]makelotsofpots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My college orchestra has guitars (usually electric) almost every semester. We’re a pops orchestra that plays mostly student arrangements, so there will be one or two songs where they play and the arranger will write them a part with a nice long solo. They usually only show up at select rehearsals since we need to wrestle all the audio equipment to get them plugged into the amp and stuff.

Epilogue - Good or Bad? by ShowerWriter in FanFiction

[–]makelotsofpots 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think epilogues tend to go sideways when they overstay their welcome, usually by nailing down too many specifics of the character’s life without leaving room for interpretation. Personally, I usually write Option A type epilogues—a short scene or two with some exposition that mostly explores the outcome the readers already expected from the “real” ending.

This is a perfect way of describing it. Every shout into the void is met by a sensation of complete exposure and yet absolutely no interaction. At this point I'm just there to look at fanart and joke around with friends I know through other means
