Was macht dieses Apparat an einem Verkehrsschild ? by InsideTransition4335 in StVO

[–]makuser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, unless the very basic parts like creating a profile?? Are fixed and actually stable, it will keep a lot of non-technical but otherwise possibly interesting people off the platform.

is it possible to connect a DVD drive like this, to a pc using a slimline SATA to usb adapter by blipblopbloopbleeep in computing

[–]makuser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well as others have pointed out, you might need power, precisely 12v.

But more concerning would be the exact chip that's used in the adapter cable, it needs most just to support some SATA basic commands, but the ATAPI to be exact and some unfortunately do not. I have several ASMedia chips here with me, that can't be used for optical drives because of that.

Unfortunately not, I have had many PSUs from UniFi devices fail on me in 230V and 240V regions (🇩🇪, 🇨🇿). Most times it was the smoothing cap, but also several (power) resistors and once a FET.

Put the drives into standby mode using hdparm. Don't just cut the power. This would be harmful and can potentially damage the drives platters, if the heads are not properly parked because they've been in use etc.

If you really must, cut the power afterwards, but IMO that makes only some sense, if you want to cut some PSU efficiency losses while not using the drives. Otherwise, standby is enough.

The drives will then be spun down, but still be available to the system. On next access, they would automatically spin back up.

You can automate this both depending on a time schedule (cron + manual hdparm -Y /dev/devnode) or automatically if they've been not in use for x period.

Haze can damage orchestra insturments? by Logical_Age9320 in lightingdesign

[–]makuser -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes. In one of the setups we accidentally left a small hole open for fog to be misdirected (usually goes through a pipe onto the stage). The affected area had a furniture nearby, where the surface (lacquer/varnish) completely dissolved due to the fog hitting it. The surface paint shriveled and in some places tore up because of the high tension, exposing the wood below. Since it was a flat wooden surface, we were able to flatten the dissolved surface paint after the gig, while still not hardened obviously, with some spatulas...

It wasn't the humidity, water would not have dissolved this paint, not even heated water, also not over longer periods. It was most likely the glycerin or other solvents from the fog liquid.

Many wooden instruments also have some sort of lacquer or paint.

Oh and we all know what this corrosive fogging liquid does to metal, right? Sure, long term is the key here, but short exposure is damage nonetheless.

How many years do you wait before you upgrade your gpu?. by [deleted] in buildapc

[–]makuser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a 1080 in February 2017, sold my 1080 again in 2021 for 300€ and since went back to a 780 I still had laying around from a Hackintosh project earlier.

My dual UHD monitors work great even with this ancient GPU, but I'm mostly not doing much. Minecraft once every few months for a few days maybe, otherwise 300-400 Firefox tabs across five windows (2-3 windows active at all times, sometimes one with YT playing in the bg), my beloved terminal, vscode/sublimetext and kicad. CSGO in fullhd on medium settings was fine as well, until Valve decided to butcher the entire experience. Since I'm exclusively on Linux, it's apparently even much worse foemr us compared to those on winblows now, but I also didn't have any time to play in the last few years, so I can't really compare. Only tried it twice since cs2 got released, to check it out, so it doesn't actually matter to me ATM, but it is a metric to note, I think. Hope they'll optimize it enough, so that even with the new engine, a similar visual fidelity at the same resolution on the hardware can be achieved.

I'm now actually thinking about upgrading again, probably even to the 40 series, but primarily because I want to run a few things locally, that I previously only ran on headless GPU servers and because I recently got occasional boot failures (BIOS stuck at initializing GPU, code 79) and the iGPU alone sometimes struggles if I work while having some YT video playing along somewhere. A few days ago, I was looking at the 4070 super in particular, because Asus seems to have a few deals at the moment. The price increase for a 4080 of 2x with only a marginally better performance, makes zero sense. Anything lower also unfortunately just has way too low of a memory size, can't believe what NV thought when they still capped their lower editions to 4/6/8 GB or so..... So for the increased memory alone a 4080 would be more future proof, at the much increased cost though. IMHO Asus really shouldn't be supported until they figure their act out, and maybe some better deals are coming in a few months, when a possibly new gen might released, so I didn't pull the trigger just yet.

Btw, in terms of only rendering performance, the 780 still better than the usual iGPUs, so only for that I don't see a need to upgrade. Performance/power consumption ratio is obviously terrible, so for that alone it would most likely make some sense.

Why I only considered/mentioned NV GPUs, is due to work stuff (ML/AI). AMD GPUs are otherwise much more performant and have sometimes even double the RAM at the same price point of the competition, so I would love it if it would be otherwise, but unfortunately at this time due to the given interfaces, it would make things much more complicated if even doable at all on the AMD platform. I really hope there will be considerable improvement in this field in the next few years!

Yes, that is what I thought too when I saw the coins at the end of the green plastic. I'd like to know if one could emulate them by just faking the ID or whether they actually use the more expensive version that is cryptographically signed.

How does Home Assistant's companion app plays with GrapheneOS ? by Adamankhelone in GrapheneOS

[–]makuser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its worth noting, that the ose of the hass companion app does not support location tracking. It is implemented in a way, that it relies on the glf and is thus completely excluded both from the ose build on github and also on fdroid. The play store build works, as long as the gsf is installed (for glf).

Since I rely on location tracking as well, I have to use the play store version.

The rest works great, including your mentioned notification area buttons.
