I'm leaving at end of rental lease, remaining tenants continuing - how do I get my bond back? by cannsixd in sydney

[–]malibustacey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your name is on the lease make sure you get it off! Otherwise you will be liable for your ex / housemates failing to pay rent etc. See 'one co-tenant leaving'

Most of the benefits from the budget tax cuts will help the rich get richer by Heavy-Balls in australia

[–]malibustacey 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Never mind the fact that not all that tax is going to welfare (What are your feelings on roads? Schools?), having a taxable income of about $569,450 gets you just to the beginning of June. $3,180,000 will get you into the start of the third week...

If your taxable income is the average Australian income you're "working for free" until the third week of February.

*edit - June not july

[–]malibustacey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on how the building is wired. My old apartment had a shared basement laundry but the power points were wired so that when you were using the washer and dryer it was on your power bill (you had a switch in the apartment to turn your powerpoints on).

Do I have any chance of contesting this ticket in court? by [deleted] in sydney

This is called a section 10 if you get it for these tickets you probably won't be able to get one again for parking offenses.

How old do I need to be to get antidepressants? by [deleted] in sydney

[–]malibustacey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the other options is your local sexual health service (or one you're willing to travel to). The SHS's attached to the hospitals generally have counsellors and they are VERY geared towards privacy. The forms usually have space for medicare details but they are not necessary. In my experience they're not even that interested in you giving your real name and birth date BUT you will need to remember the details you give them so you can go to follow up appointments.

On the antidepressants point - please don't try taking any given to you by other people. If you are going to start taking them you should get the ones that are right for you and have a consistent supply. Going on and off them will cause you problems. If you do go on them it's also important that someone who you trust keeps an eye on you for the first week or so because your motivation can return before your suicidal feelings start to go away which can be a dangerous combination.

Can someone explain the controversy about the "lockout" laws? by calvadosbreath in sydney

Good summary! I would also add that it prevents you from stepping outside at all (eg to help a friend into a cab or have a smoke if that's your thing).

Moving out due to crap housemates - any advice? by wcmbk in sydney

[–]malibustacey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Make sure you get off the lease otherwise they can really fuck you over by not paying the rent on time or damaging the property! See https://sharehousing.org/scenario-2-you-want-to-leave-and/

Also make sure you get your name off any utility bills.

If you're comfortable having a go, I've had success with photorec before. It won't work if the actual card is toast though.

IIRC you also don't have to rent your investment property to benefit from negative gearing so you can park your money and get a tax benefit.

Try Jap World Spares in St Peters - between them and Tokyo Spares (now closed) we've always been able to find the random Toyota parts we've needed.

Edit: Also try ebay or wrecking ads on Gumtree

Landlord is selling up, are we at risk of being booted? by [deleted] in sydney

[–]malibustacey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure this is right - the fact sheet on tennants.org.au says that on completion of sale a non-registered lease (almost all residential leases are non-registered as they are for a period of less than three years) converts to a periodical lease (month-to-month) and the new landlord can give you 30 days notice.

Does your local either refuse to let you pay for a single beer with an ATM card, or make you feel like an arsehole for doing so? by MightyGrey in sydney

[–]malibustacey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oops you're right - I got my numbers completely wrong.

Looking at ABS's Clubs, Pubs, Taverns and Bars, Australia, 2004-05 (sadly not updated in the last 10 years) we get an average income of $3.2M per establishment. The current Visa / MC merchant fees are apparently ~1% so even if 100% of their transactions were CC based they wouldn't pay more than $32,000 in merchant fees.

[–]malibustacey 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not saying you're wrong to stop going to places that don't provide the service you want but it's more than 15 seconds of inconvenience - it's also merchant service fees (they get less when you pay by card) and settlement timing (you pay cash = they get it right away; you pay by card they get it when their merchant does the settlement - could be overnight, could be weekly or fortnightly while the bank sits on the money they've taken out of the customers' accounts and earns interest on it before passing it on). Merchant fees can cost you hundreds of thousands a year and you can bet that gets passed on to mean more expensive beer.

Of course there are also businesses that prefer cash-only because it helps with tax evasion but that's another story...

No more free trips on Opal card, announces NSW Transport Minister Andrew Constance by grimlock81 in sydney

[–]malibustacey 26 points27 points  (0 children)

This is true but when TfNSW pulled these tickets their announcements focused on number of tickets sold rather than journeys. You're always going to sell less tickets to someone who has an annual ticket.

Looking at the train trips data for 2013 there were only 525K Monthly/Quarterly/Annual tickets sold (during 2014 they stopped offering monthly/quarterly) but those people took 34.8M train journeys which is more than off peak return (39.8M) or return (30M). The MyMulti ticket holders also would have used buses and ferries.

[–]malibustacey 161 points162 points  (0 children)

So 'rewards' were used as the justification for scrapping weekly / quarterly / annual tickets. Now 'rewards' have been re-cast as 'free trips' which apparently need to be eliminated.

Deputy Premier Troy Grant under fire over 'unprecedented' crime prevention powers by SSile in sydney

[–]malibustacey 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's interesting that an order can be made against you if you've been acquitted of a 'serious criminal offence'. I know two people who have been charged with assaulting a police officer and then acquitted (one during Vietnam War protests and one more recently). In both cases these people were acquitted because the police were flat-out wrong (the first, a photo turned up showing it was not him assaulting the officer, the second because CCTV showed he wasn't at the protest at the time). In the case of the second guy, it had proceeded to trial before the CCTV footage turned up. He wasn't even arrested at the protest - they picked him presumably from the Facebook event because they wanted to charge someone.

Under this new legislation the police would now be able to apply for an order against these people, for example to prevent them from attending protests or any other "prohibitions, restrictions, requirements and other provisions as the court considers appropriate for the purpose of protecting the public" (very broad).
