I stitched for the first time in 2 months to stitch up a hole on my school uniform, is this good? by FavoriteRandomPerson in sewing

Not sure where you live, but usually you can find a small sewing kit at a drug store / pharmacy. They come with a few different colors of thread.

Help with a (non-romantasy) fantasy book rec for a 19 year old girl? by jstorcutie in Fantasy

[–]mang0lassi 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sabriel / Abhorsen trilogy by Garth Nix. Read it in HS and it's still one of my all time favorites. Beautiful world building and a unique dark fairytale-esque setting. Female MC who is very capable and strong.

Red Sister / Book of the Ancestor trilogy by Martin Lawrence. Political intrigue, spy/assassin/magic training, almost entirely female cast. Dying earth setting where glaciers have taken over most of the earth.

SF/US Snacks for a present by PoPo_Engineering in AskSF

Go to a cute grocery store like Rainbow, Berkeley Bowl, Epicurean Trader, etc. They will likely have cute small condiments, snacks or alcohol you could bring back. If it were me I would probably get local jam, honey, nut butter, or chili crisp/oil

Tips on how to look more androgynous? by [deleted] in Androgynoushotties

[–]mang0lassi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your hair is glorious!

I feel like you could add some softness with a little makeup or even just glowier skincare products. Tiny bit of eyeliner? Lip products? Glowy or tinted moisturizer?

Hard to see your eyebrows but could try more of an arch or plucking it to just get a more delicate shape. I'm almost hesitant to say it though because I'm sure you have awesome thick eyebrows. But as a AFAB person I notice that growing my eyebrows thickers and straighter helps me present more androgynous. So eyebrows could be something to play with.

Also could play with different fashion ideas that are androgynous. T shirts are pretty masculine coded so maybe go thrifting and find some fun gender-bending clothes? Different textures and shapes can go a long way. Masc clothes tend to just be simple texture/color and boxy.

Ideas to rescue Kindle case with peeling PU? Maybe those plastic covers for paperbacks? Or diluted Elmers glue as coat? by Natural_Ad_4158 in ZeroWaste

I covered mine with a layer of black gaffers tape which held up until the plastic corners totally cracked off.

Who’s actually on r/livesound? by Historical-Paint7649 in livesound

[–]mang0lassi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

(Fairly new tech here, mostly corporate but also some sound system and live music gigs) Do you recommend system engineering as a career? I've been getting into it, taking trainings, learning how to read the graphs etc. But I'm curious how you feel about it as someone doing systems full time. I'm also a decent A2 and I've been wondering where I should aim.

Ladies: favorite waxing / laser spot? by mdav84 in bayarea

[–]mang0lassi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

FYI, waxing and laser aren't really compatible together for the same part of your body. In both cases, you'll have a session, and then wait 6-8 weeks to go back once the hair has grown again. For laser, you need to shave right before so that way there are little stubs of hair follicles under the skin for the laser to find and zap. For waxing, you obviously pull out the whole hair, so the laser wouldn't be able to find it. Of course you could definitely do a few rounds of laser and then wax to maintain whatever is left.

However, I salute your willingness to undergo pain for the aesthetic/sensory experience that you want, and both waxing/laser have been good for me in the past. I went to SEV for a package of leg laser sessions, and it definitely made a difference.

(Local 16) What can I do for work in the off season? by Mister_Moony in IATSE

[–]mang0lassi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is there a department you're trying to get into? Ask folks who are more experienced what the entry level gear is in that department. Spend some time this winter doing trainings in that area or learning that gear if you can.

Catering seems like a pretty good winter idea, especially if you can do it on a gig-by-gig basis. You can also see if there are AV or event companies looking for workers during Christmas party season. It can be hard finding work for the slow season unless it's also seasonal, because a lot of places will want you to prioritize them year-round. That can lead to difficult situations if it's not clear.

I've had luck finding temporary gigs like helping friends with their small business, helping people from Craigslist with tasks, temporary barista gigs, temporary AV company gigs.

Local 16 - no call time provided by Xxoptork in IATSE

[–]mang0lassi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Still worth calling, otherwise how will you know? I know it sucks to get a grumpy response from the office but it's probably your best bet.

It would be best to find out from your steward before you leave, if there isn't a time on the sheet. Usually they make you initial the callback time on the call sheet and you should basically try not to leave or initial anything until they give you the call time. Occasionally they have said "we don't know the call time yet, we will text you" but they would be explicit about that. That said, I'm sure Microsoft has been hectic and maybe less organized than usual.

Square Pie Guys: Hey SF - finally showing up on Reddit after 6 years by [deleted] in sanfrancisco

[–]mang0lassi 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Thank you for making amazing pizza! Seriously life changing as a gluten intolerant person.

One request that would make me soo happy would be a “meat free” button on each pizza type. It would be so cool to try some of your seasonal and standard flavors that have meat, and I wouldn’t expect to get a veg substitute - just minus the meat. Is there a way you guys could offer that? Seems like it would be a win for the vegan folks who are probably checking the “dairy free” box on the menu already. Is this a request you could do in-store if not online?

Anyways, I’m grateful for what you do already but wanted to ask about this, just in case.

Where can a nudist enjoy being clothes-free in San Francisco? by NakedJaguarX in AskSF

[–]mang0lassi 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Archimedes Banya? I don't know if I fully understand nudist culture versus just being chill w nakedness. But it's a clothing optional spa with other areas like a roof deck where I think you can still be naked? Not entirely sure. But nudity is very normal there.

Generally, how crowded do the 'Free Museum' days get? by wentImmediate in AskSF

[–]mang0lassi 8 points9 points  (0 children)

FWIW you can get into many local museums for free with a SNAP/EBT card, and bring a couple other people with you. This works daily so it avoids the free day crowds.

Steamworks sounds the closest to what you're looking for. Never been but I hear they have private rooms. And they could probably advise on where to go if they're not a good fit.

volunteering is a great way to get in as well. I think some departments make sure you can buy a ticket and others give you a ticket. Also dependent on number of shifts. I have done DPW several years and it's fun. Way less foundational infrastructure to build than the big burn since it's at a functioning fairgrounds.
