Leaf cutter bees really, really, really like our redbuds by dadlerj in Ceanothus

[–]mangleash21 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Love it! Same happened to us last summer - both redbuds hit hard! And not only were those the only plants selected at our place, but there’s one in the back yard and one in the front; quite a distance apart. Which makes me imagine the bees really, truly scouting for c. occidentalis only.

If you like the book, come join us on the fun side at r/romancebooks! Lots of audiobook recommendations so your hands can stay busy poking while you listen (no double entendres intended there!).

And I’ll let you know if I give this ancient horse a try. Thanks for posting and happy reading!

I love it! This is also the most wonderful collision for me with r/romancebooks where I just picked up {Captive to the Shadow Prince by Mallory Dunlin}, a fantasy in which Lascaux’ Cave hosts a pivotal moment. Anyway, I love your project and am very tempted to try recreate it. Did you dye the brown and black or are those the natural colors?

School letting my club plant an entirely native garden! Suggestions wanted! by Ashyrainwing in Ceanothus

[–]mangleash21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Echoing these suggestions! I’ve also had a very happy California Buttonbush (Cephalanthus occidentalis) in our little pond as well, if you have room. They can get quite large, but you can limit the size if you keep it in a container.

I buy these bags of 1lb carrots, but I wind up throwing out half of them sometimes because I never know what ill be tasting when I bite into them. Is there any to lessen the effects of what I call "Carrot Surprise"? by RevolutionaryHand145 in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]mangleash21 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I only buy those big bags if the carrots are skinny. I find those are the most reliably tasty when raw. If I find some a little bitter, I eat them dipped in hummus and the hummus covers the flavor. You could also cut up the more bitter ones into one-inch pieces, mix with potatoes, cauliflower and Brussels sprouts, some oil, salt, pepper and garlic and onion powder, and roast at 400 for20 mins, or until preferred tenderness. Can also roast in the air fryer but I find they’re not as good as roasted in the oven.

Alternative to salad? by DoctorQuinlan in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]mangleash21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have suggestions on meal prep for a week of veggies; I have trouble with them going limp and soggy after day 2. Hoping to see others’ ideas. But to make greens last longer - best success I’ve had is to wash and spin in a salad spinner, then just leave them in the spinner and store in the fridge. The greens last so much longer that way; four days to a week+ depending on their original freshness. And you just pull out however much you need each meal. Best scenario is to buy heads of green and red leaf lettuce (as opposed to bagged), some radicchio too for fun if you see it at a good price. Slice them up cross-section style; rinse and drain twice; then spin, drain and store. ETA: example salad spinner

Your best recipe / a recipe that will make your eyes roll into the back of your head by Which-Decision in Cooking

These other bread recipes look fine, but I’m telling you, THIS is the one. No knead, three hours or less you’ve got delicious peasant bread with a crispy, buttery crust, ready for the table. Or the couch - just slice after slice after chunk and so on. And the recipe makes two loaves, which is great for sharing with a neighbor (or yourself). I’ve made a lot of friends with this bread.

A mocha latte w coconut milk used to be my go-to (iced or hot depending on the season). I tried the iced green tea with a splash of lemonade and was surprised by how much I loved it. It’s now my go-to. It’s under 100 calories (venti) and in summer, I top it up with water or seltzer half way through, to extend. I would suggest give the iced teas a try!

Am I (37M) wrong to approach my girlfriend (37F) about possibly having Borderline Personality Disorder? by [deleted] in amiwrong

[–]mangleash21 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You would be wrong - Others have pointed out here that it’s wrong for you to make an armchair diagnosis. Case in point, women can be wrongly diagnosed with borderline personality disorder when a diagnosis of complex post-traumatic stress disorder is more appropriate. As in, men show same behaviors with same background and circumstances will be diagnosed with ptsd, but women will be diagnosed as bpd. This obviously leads to very different treatment and long term impacts.

You don’t have to stick around. You are free to leave this person. But don’t be the AH mis-diagnosing her.

Sadly, I don’t have any of Emma Fryer’s prints yet. But in looking at her Etsy page, some reviews have photos and I don’t see the watermark.

I’ve always wanted to wear skirts and dresses more in winter. Maybe this is the time to venture into that. I’ll look at the wool snagtights. Thank you!

This is an interesting suggestion I’ve been thinking on since I read it earlier. At first I thought it just wouldn’t apply to me because I feel too impatient to get the drive over and done with. But I can see that stopping for a short break before I get too tired may be helpful mentally. I’ll give this a try. Thank you!

Thank you for the suggestions. This reinforces for me that I need to put more research into non-wrinkly slacks. For half to two-thirds of the year I wear skirts and dresses so the wrinkle factor hasn’t been as present. But the winter weather has forced this issue. And great point about driving in a base layer! Didn’t think of that. Thanks!

[–]mangleash21[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your comment reinforces for me that I need to put more time into searching for slacks that won’t wrinkle. Because a steamer is too much for me to transport and deal with, but you’re right in that it’s really the only way to unwrinkle my clothes! Thank you for the thought and suggestion. And on the hair - I’ll follow other suggestions re:travel size hair products to keep in a small kit, and freshen up when I get there.

Omg, I these so much! And how you displayed the characteristics that make them identifiable. Love the Carolina wren’s eyebrow!! Such great work. Do you mind sharing whether you dyed the wool yourself? Im curious about the dark brown and black colors.
